A Day of Exploration and Authentic Tastes

Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the natural beauty and local culture that Port Antonio so generously offers. With Olivia by my side, I was eager to explore Somerset Falls and dive into the heart of the community at Musgrave Market. It's days like these that remind me why we travel – to connect with places on a deeper level and create lasting memories.

Our day began with a quick and tasty breakfast at Patty Express. I grabbed a couple of their famous patties, the flaky crust giving way to a savory filling that was the perfect start to our adventurous day. It's amazing how such a simple dish can be so satisfying and full of Jamaican flavor.

Somerset Falls: A Tropical Paradise

After breakfast, we drove to Somerset Falls, a place I had read about but was still unprepared for its breathtaking beauty. As we approached, the sounds of rushing water grew louder, hinting at the wonders that awaited us. The entrance to the falls is like stepping into another world, a veritable botanical garden teeming with lush greenery.

The Daniels River cascades down through a vibrant garden of ferns, heliconias, lilies, and crotons into glistening, dark pools. Olivia and I wandered through the narrow gorge, the air thick with the scent of tropical blossoms. We were greeted by a local guide who shared fascinating insights about the native flora and fauna. He pointed out cocoa plants, ginger lilies and various ferns, explaining their traditional uses. I found myself captivated by the knowledge that was shared, and I made a mental note to learn more about these plants when I returned home.

We then boarded a handmade bamboo raft, which took us deeper into the heart of the falls. The gentle glide along the water was incredibly peaceful, allowing us to fully absorb the beauty surrounding us. The highlight was reaching the main waterfall, where we could swim in the refreshingly cool, clear water. The cascade provided a natural massage on my shoulders, an experience that was both invigorating and relaxing.

The earth has music for those who listen.

Olivia, ever the adventurer, was the first to jump in, her laughter echoing through the gorge. I soon followed, and we spent a blissful hour swimming and exploring the hidden alcoves behind the falls. It was a perfect moment of connection with nature, a reminder of the simple joys in life.

Musgrave Market: A Hub of Local Life

Leaving the tranquility of Somerset Falls, we headed to Musgrave Market in the heart of Port Antonio. I was excited to experience the vibrant energy of this local hub, a place where the community comes together to buy, sell, and socialize.

As we approached the market, the sounds of lively chatter and reggae music filled the air. The market was a kaleidoscope of colors, with vendors displaying a wide array of goods, from fresh produce to handmade crafts. We strolled through the narrow aisles, taking in the sights and smells. I was particularly drawn to the craft section, where local artisans showcased their talents.

I admired hand-crafted beaded jewelry, intricately woven baskets, and vibrant paintings depicting scenes of Jamaican life. Olivia, with her keen eye for unique finds, discovered a beautiful hand-woven purse made from coconut fibers. She struck up a conversation with the artisan, learning about the traditional techniques used to create these unique pieces. I was impressed by Olivia's ability to connect with people, her genuine interest in their stories creating a bond that transcended cultural differences.

We also explored the food section of the market, where vendors offered an array of fresh fruits and vegetables. The vibrant colors of the produce were a feast for the eyes, and the aromas were simply irresistible. I sampled a Jamaican orange, which, to my surprise, was green. The vendor explained that despite its color, it was incredibly sweet and juicy. He was right! It was a burst of tropical flavor that I won't soon forget.

Before leaving the market, we stopped by a stall selling spices. I purchased a variety of local herbs and seasonings, eager to recreate the authentic Jamaican flavors in my own kitchen back in Toronto. As an urban planner, I am always interested in how public spaces shape community life, and Musgrave Market was a perfect example of how a market can serve as a vital social and economic hub.

An Evening of Culinary Delights

For lunch, we ventured to Best Hidden Secret Restaurant, a local spot recommended by several people we met. The restaurant lived up to its name, tucked away in a quiet corner of Port Antonio. The food was incredible, authentic Jamaican cuisine prepared with love and care. I savored every bite, appreciating the rich flavors and spices that are so characteristic of this island.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Di Gazebo Bar&grill for dinner. The restaurant is perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, offering breathtaking views. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with locals and tourists mingling and enjoying the music. I ordered jerk chicken, a Jamaican staple, while Olivia opted for fresh seafood. The food was delicious, and the setting was simply magical. The warm Caribbean breeze, the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks, and the company of my amazing wife made for a perfect evening.

As we sipped on our drinks, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the natural beauty of Somerset Falls to the vibrant culture of Musgrave Market, Port Antonio had captivated us with its charm and authenticity. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this special place, to connect with its people, and to create memories that would last a lifetime.

Tomorrow marks the last day of our trip, and we plan to make the most of it by visiting Portie Tours and San San Beach. I am also hoping that we can squeeze in a visit to Cristal Nightclub. I am excited to see what other hidden gems Port Antonio has in store for us.

Before heading back to our Airbnb, we stopped by Devon House Ice Cream for a sweet treat. I had heard so much about this place, and it did not disappoint. With over 27 flavors to choose from, it was hard to make a decision, but I finally settled on the coconut rum raisin, while Olivia chose the mango. The ice cream was rich and creamy, the perfect ending to a perfect day.
