A Day Among Giants
Today was a deep dive into the heart of Jamaica, a day where the aroma of world-renowned coffee mingled with the salty air of the coast. Olivia and I ventured into the Blue Mountains National Park, explored historic estates, and savored the local flavors. It was a day that truly awakened the senses and deepened our connection to this vibrant island.

Our day began with a hearty vegan breakfast at Living it Vegan. As someone passionate about sustainable living, I was excited to support a local business that shares my values. Olivia and I enjoyed a delicious meal, fueling up for our adventure into the Blue Mountains. I opted for a vibrant smoothie bowl packed with local fruits, while Olivia savored a savory plant-based wrap. The flavors were fresh and invigorating, setting the perfect tone for the day ahead. It's inspiring to see how creative chefs can be with vegan cuisine, and this little gem in Port Antonio certainly proved that point.
With our appetites satisfied, we embarked on our drive to the Blue Mountains National Park. The drive itself was an experience, as we wound our way through verdant hills and valleys. The air grew cooler and crisper as we ascended, a welcome change from the coastal humidity. As an urban planner, I couldn't help but admire the way the local communities integrated with the natural landscape. The park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a vital conservation area, protecting a rich diversity of plant and animal life. I was particularly excited to spot some of the endemic bird species that call these mountains home.
Arriving at the park, we were immediately struck by the sheer scale and majesty of the mountains. Lush rainforest stretched as far as the eye could see, a testament to Jamaica's commitment to preserving its natural heritage. We decided to take a short hike along one of the many trails, immersing ourselves in the sights and sounds of the forest. The scent of damp earth and exotic flowers filled the air, while the calls of unseen birds echoed through the trees. I made a mental note to bring my hiking boots next time, as the trails were a bit more challenging than I had anticipated. Olivia, ever the enthusiastic photographer, captured the stunning scenery with her camera, determined to preserve these memories forever.
Sometimes, the most enriching experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the simple beauty of nature and the warmth of human connection.
Our next stop was the Craighton Estate Blue Mountain Coffee Tour. As a coffee lover, I had been eagerly anticipating this experience. The estate, nestled high in the mountains, boasts a rich history and a reputation for producing some of the world's finest coffee. We joined a guided tour, where we learned about the entire coffee-making process, from bean to cup. Our guide, a knowledgeable and passionate local, explained the unique growing conditions that give Blue Mountain coffee its distinctive flavor. The high altitude, cool temperatures, and abundant rainfall all contribute to the coffee's exceptional quality.

We strolled through the coffee fields, admiring the neatly arranged rows of coffee plants. The air was thick with the aroma of ripe coffee cherries, a truly intoxicating scent. We even had the opportunity to try our hand at picking the cherries, a task that requires a surprising amount of skill and patience. After the tour, we were treated to a coffee tasting session, where we savored the smooth, rich flavor of freshly brewed Blue Mountain coffee. It was an experience that truly elevated my appreciation for this beloved beverage. I purchased a bag of beans to take home, eager to share the taste of Jamaica with friends and family in Toronto.
After our mountain adventure, we drove back to the coast for a late lunch at Jovi's Seafood Place. Located in the heart of the craft village in Port Antonio, this restaurant specializes in classic Jamaican-style dishes. Olivia and I shared a platter of grilled seafood, savoring the fresh flavors of the ocean. The restaurant's outdoor seating area offered stunning views of the harbor, creating a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. As we ate, we watched the local fishermen bringing in their daily catch, a reminder of the close connection between the community and the sea.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to ShanShy Beach Complex , a popular spot just west of downtown Port Antonio. With its lively bar area, dance floor, and spacious beach, it's the perfect place to unwind and soak up the island vibes. We ordered a couple of Red Stripe beers and settled into some chairs on the sand, watching the waves crash against the shore. The music was upbeat and infectious, and soon we found ourselves tapping our feet along to the rhythm. I even mustered the courage to try a few dance moves, much to Olivia's amusement. As darkness fell, the beach came alive with the sounds of laughter and music, a testament to Jamaica's vibrant culture.

For dinner, we decided to try Survival Beach , known for its Ital and vegetarian cuisine. The restaurant, owned by a Rastafarian named Oliver, has been serving up delicious and affordable meals for over two decades. We ordered the Ital Stew, a flavorful combination of vegetables, herbs, and spices. The dish was hearty and satisfying, a true taste of Jamaica's Rastafarian culture. Oliver himself came out to greet us, sharing stories about his life and his passion for vegetarian cooking. It was a truly authentic and memorable dining experience.
