A Final Day in Blue

As our Moroccan adventure in Chefchaouen draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared as a family. Today was a day of soaking in the last moments of this blue-washed city, revisiting favorite spots, and savoring the unique atmosphere that makes Chefchaouen so special. It's hard to believe our 11 days here are already over, but the memories we've made will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

Our final day started with a leisurely breakfast at Café Restaurant Marisco Twins. Olivia and I enjoyed some traditional Moroccan pastries, while the kids opted for familiar favorites like croissants and fresh juice. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring, reminiscing about our favorite moments from the past week and a half.

First on our list was a visit to the Kasbah. This historic fortress stands out with its reddish-brown walls against the blue backdrop of the city. As an urban planner, I was particularly interested in the architecture and the history of the Kasbah, which dates back to the 15th century. We explored the lush gardens, climbed the towers for panoramic views, and delved into the ethnographic museum housed within its walls. The museum offered a fascinating glimpse into Moroccan heritage, displaying traditional musical instruments, pottery, and weaponry. It was a great way to connect with the local culture and learn more about the region's rich past.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its picturesque streets, but in the warmth of its people and the richness of its culture.

After the Kasbah, we wandered through the medina, revisiting some of our favorite photo spots. Of course, we had to make a stop at Sidi Bouchouka. Olivia had read about it being one of the most Instagrammable spots in Chefchaouen, and it didn't disappoint. The vibrant blue stairs and colorful tiles provided a stunning backdrop for some final family photos. We took our time, soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying the playful energy of the kids as they posed and explored.

Next, Olivia was keen to do some last-minute shopping at Blue. concept store. It was the perfect place to pick up some unique Moroccan gifts and artisanal treasures. Olivia found some beautiful handcrafted jewelry, while I admired the intricate textiles and ceramics. It was a great way to support local artisans and bring a piece of Chefchaouen back home with us. The store itself was a visual treat, filled with colorful displays and unique finds.

For lunch, we decided to try Restaurant Bab Ssour, known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. We started with a selection of vegan starters, including flavorful bean and lentil dishes. For our main courses, Olivia and I shared a tagine, while the kids enjoyed some grilled meats. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. It was the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a leisurely meal.

As the afternoon wore on, we continued to explore the medina, getting lost in the labyrinthine streets and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. We stopped for mint tea at a local café, savoring the sweet and refreshing drink while watching the world go by. It was a perfect moment of relaxation and reflection, as we contemplated our time in Chefchaouen.

For our final dinner in Chefchaouen, we chose Sofia, a restaurant known for its Moroccan and international cuisine. I opted for the vegetable tagine, which was the best I had during our entire trip. Olivia enjoyed a delicious couscous, and the kids were happy with their choices of grilled chicken and pasta. The restaurant had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. It was a perfect way to end our culinary journey in Chefchaouen.

Tomorrow marks the end of our Moroccan adventure, as we prepare to make our way back to Tangier for our flight home. While I'm excited to return to Toronto and resume my work as an urban planner, I'll always cherish the memories we've made in Chefchaouen. This trip has been a reminder of the importance of cultural immersion, family connection, and sustainable travel. I hope our experiences have inspired you to explore the world and discover the unique beauty that awaits in every corner of our planet.

As I sit here tonight, reflecting on our time in Chefchaouen, I'm reminded of a quote by Ibn Battuta, the famous Moroccan explorer:

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.

And that's exactly what I hope to do – to share our stories and inspire others to embark on their own adventures. Until next time, farewell from the Blue Pearl of Morocco!

Looking back on this trip, I realize how much I value these experiences with Olivia and how important it is for us to expose our (future) children to different cultures and perspectives. It's something I definitely want to prioritize as we plan future travels. Perhaps next time, we'll explore more of my Caribbean roots and delve into the history and culture of the British Virgin Islands. But for now, I'm grateful for the memories we've made in Chefchaouen and excited to share them with you all. Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey!

The Kasbah provided a great insight into the history of Chefchaouen, highlighting its strategic importance and cultural evolution. The panoramic views from the Kasbah towers were simply breathtaking, offering a new perspective on the blue city.

Our visit to Sidi Bouchouka was a delightful experience. The vibrant colors and intricate designs of the tiles and doorways made it a photographer's dream. It's a place where every corner tells a story, and we were happy to capture some of those stories with our cameras.

Shopping at Blue. concept store was a treat, as we discovered unique and handcrafted items that truly reflected the artistry of Morocco. It's always rewarding to support local artisans and bring home souvenirs that have a special meaning.

Restaurant Bab Ssour offered an authentic Moroccan dining experience, with flavorful dishes and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It's a place where you can savor the traditional flavors of the region and enjoy the company of friends and family.

Finally, dinner at Sofia was a perfect ending to our culinary journey in Chefchaouen. The delicious food, friendly service, and cozy ambiance made it a memorable experience. It's a restaurant that truly captures the essence of Moroccan hospitality.

Our final day in Chefchaouen was a celebration of all the things that make this city so special. From its stunning blue-washed streets to its rich cultural heritage and delicious cuisine, Chefchaouen has left an indelible mark on our hearts. As we prepare to leave tomorrow, we'll carry with us the memories of this incredible adventure and the inspiration to continue exploring the world and embracing new cultures.
