Kanazawa's Cultural Tapestry: A Sunday Stroll Through Art and History

Today was a day of exploration and immersion into the heart of Kanazawa's cultural scene. From modern art to historical shrines and local crafts, every moment was a discovery. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel, to experience new things and learn about different cultures. I'm excited to share my experiences with you all.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Aashirwad. I opted for a traditional Indian breakfast, a delightful change from the usual Japanese fare. The restaurant was cozy, and the staff were incredibly welcoming, pointing out the vegan options on the menu. I settled on the aloo gobi with chapati, and it was absolutely delicious. The spices were just right, and it was the perfect start to a day of exploring. It reminded me of the small Indian restaurant near my antiques shop in Dublin; a world away, but with a similarly comforting atmosphere.

With a full stomach, I set off to the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art. The museum itself is a work of art, a circular building with glass walls that blur the lines between the museum and the community. It’s designed to be open and accessible, inviting everyone to come in and experience the art. I was particularly drawn to Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool, an installation that plays with perception and reality. Looking down into the pool, people appear to be underwater, a truly surreal experience. I also enjoyed James Turrell's Blue Planet Sky, an exhibit that explores light as a medium. The way the light changed throughout the day was fascinating, and it made me think about the different ways we perceive the world around us.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

After immersing myself in modern art, I decided to delve into Kanazawa's history with a visit to the Kanazawa Shinise Memorial Hall. This beautifully preserved wooden townhouse was once a pharmacy, and it offers a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of Kanazawa's citizens. I was fascinated by the old shop space, the living quarters, and the tea room. The museum also showcases local handicrafts, and I was particularly impressed by the intricate temari balls. As an antiques dealer, I appreciated the craftsmanship and the attention to detail. I spent a good hour wandering through the halls, imagining what life must have been like for the family who lived there. It was a stark contrast to the modern art museum, but equally captivating. I found myself drawn to a display of Noh theatre masks, their painted faces telling stories of ancient legends. It reminded me of some of the masks I've seen in my own shop, each one holding a piece of history within its delicate features.

Next on my list was Oyama Shrine. This Shinto shrine is dedicated to Maeda Toshiie, the first lord of the Maeda Clan, and his wife, Omatsu. The shrine's main gate is a unique blend of Japanese, Chinese, and European architectural elements, designed by a Dutch architect. The stained-glass windows on the third floor were particularly striking, and I learned that the gate was once used as a lighthouse. The shrine also has a beautiful strolling garden with ponds and bridges, designed to resemble harps and lutes. I took a leisurely walk through the garden, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the beautiful scenery. I paused for a moment to admire the statue of Maeda Toshiie, a reminder of the city's rich history. It was interesting to learn that the shrine was originally located elsewhere and moved to its current location in 1873. The blend of architectural styles in the gate was quite unique, a testament to Kanazawa's openness to outside influences.

Before dinner, I made a stop at the Ishikawa Local Products Center. This center is a treasure trove of local crafts and souvenirs. I was overwhelmed by the variety of goods on offer, from traditional sweets to lacquerware and accessories. I picked up a few souvenirs for Aoife and Liam, some gold leaf covered sweets and a small piece of lacquerware. I also spent some time browsing the local crafts, admiring the skill and artistry of the local artisans. I even considered taking a wagashi class, but decided to save that for another day. It was a great place to get a sense of the local culture and to support local businesses. As someone who appreciates fine craftsmanship, I was impressed by the quality of the products on display. I picked up a beautiful hand-painted fan for Aoife, knowing she would appreciate the delicate artistry.

For lunch, I enjoyed a delightful meal at Dining Tsuzumi. This restaurant offers a fusion of French and Italian cuisine with a Japanese twist. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the staff were attentive and friendly. I opted for the Noto pork cutlet, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The restaurant is conveniently located near Kanazawa Station, making it easily accessible. It was a welcome break after a busy day of sightseeing. I savored every bite, appreciating the blend of flavors and the elegant presentation. The experience reminded me of some of my favorite restaurants in Dublin, where chefs are equally passionate about using local ingredients and creating innovative dishes.

As evening approached, I treated myself to dinner at Teppanyaki makibi san-an. This teppanyaki restaurant offers a unique dining experience, with chefs cooking right in front of you on a hot iron plate. The aroma of the food was intoxicating, and the chef's skill was mesmerizing. I opted for the Wagyu beef course, which was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth. The chef explained each dish in detail, and the staff were incredibly attentive. It was a truly memorable dining experience. The chef's knife skills were particularly impressive, reminding me of the precision and artistry required in my own profession. The Wagyu beef was exquisite, a testament to the quality of local ingredients. I paired the meal with a local sake, which complemented the flavors perfectly.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Nagamachi District, visit the Geisha House Shima, and explore Kanazawa Castle. I might even check out the Kohaku Bar in the evening if I'm feeling up to it. I am looking forward to discovering more of Kanazawa's hidden gems. It will be fascinating to see the contrast between the samurai district and the geisha house, two very different aspects of Japanese history and culture. I'm particularly interested in learning more about the geisha tradition and its role in Kanazawa's past. Maybe I'll find some interesting pieces for my shop back in Dublin.

Kanazawa continues to surprise and delight me. It's a city that seamlessly blends tradition and modernity, offering something for everyone. I'm grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful city and share my experiences with you all. As I reflect on the day, I am struck by the diversity of experiences I've had, from the cutting-edge art at the 21st Century Museum to the historical charm of the Shinise Memorial Hall. It's these contrasts that make Kanazawa so unique and captivating. Good night from Kanazawa!
