A Day of Discovery in Kanazawa
Today was a deep dive into the heart of Kanazawa, a city that continues to surprise and enchant me with its blend of tradition and modernity. From exploring the intricate artistry of local crafts to stepping back in time at a samurai residence and indulging in the city's culinary scene, it was a day filled with rich experiences and delightful discoveries. It's these kinds of days that remind me why I love to travel, to learn, and to share these moments with all of you.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Installation Table ENSO L'asymetrie du calme. The name itself is quite a mouthful, but the food was even more impressive. This French restaurant, nestled in a charming house near the Sai River, served up a delightful array of dishes that were both innovative and comforting. The ambiance was perfect for a leisurely start to the day, setting the tone for the adventures that lay ahead.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I headed to the Kanazawa Utatsuyama Kogei Kobo. This crafts workshop is dedicated to preserving and developing Kanazawa's traditional crafts. As an antiques dealer, I was particularly excited to see the artistry and skill that goes into these creations. From the moment I stepped inside, I was surrounded by exquisite works of art, each telling a story of cultural significance and masterful craftsmanship.

I spent hours wandering through the studios, watching artisans at work and learning about the various techniques used in their crafts. I was particularly fascinated by the Kaga Yuzen dyeing technique, a traditional method passed down through generations. The intricate patterns and vibrant colors were truly mesmerizing, and I couldn't help but feel a deep appreciation for the dedication and artistry of these skilled craftspeople.
Kanazawa is a city where the past and present intertwine, creating a unique tapestry of culture and experiences.
Next on my list was The Old Site of Mr. Kurando Terashima's House. This historical site offers a glimpse into the life of a middle-class samurai during the Edo period. It's often translated as “The Old Site of Mr. Kurando Terashima's House,” this house museum recounts the daily life of Kanazawa's banished samurai in the time before his exile. Kurando was a middle-class samurai of the Maeda family and it is said that this house was constructed in the latter half of the 18th century.

As I walked through the house, I imagined what life must have been like for Kurando and his family. The simple yet elegant architecture, the serene garden, and the carefully preserved artifacts all spoke volumes about the samurai way of life. I learned about Kurando's role in the community, his artistic pursuits, and his eventual exile for criticizing the government. It was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and hardships faced by those who dared to challenge the status quo. The house itself is unique in Kanazawa. While most visitors look to the Nomura Samurai Residence for a fine samurai home, Nomura's is actually a merchant's abode, hosting the samurai's gallery of artifacts alongside the decor of the merchant's vast wealth. Terashima's home is a true samurai mansion, broad and carefully arranged with a peaceful garden and simple style. One of the house's highlights is the dry bed garden.
After immersing myself in history and art, it was time to explore Kanazawa's culinary scene. I made my way to Omicho Market, a bustling marketplace that has been the city's kitchen for over 300 years. The market is a vibrant network of covered streets lined with about 200 shops and stalls. Here, you can find everything from fresh seafood and local produce to clothing and kitchen tools.

The market was a feast for the senses, with the sights, sounds, and smells of fresh food filling the air. I wandered through the stalls, admiring the colorful displays of fish, vegetables, and fruits. I sampled some of the local delicacies, including fresh oysters, grilled eel, and a variety of pickled vegetables. I was particularly impressed by the seafood, which was incredibly fresh and flavorful.
For lunch, I decided to try Genzaemon, an Izakaya known for its authentic Japanese cuisine and cozy atmosphere. The restaurant is nestled in the vibrant streets of Kanazawa. I ordered a selection of small plates, including grilled skewers, delicate sashimi, and Kanazawa oden. Each dish was a culinary masterpiece, showcasing the artistry and skill of the chef. I also sampled some local sake, which perfectly complemented the food.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at JIGGER BAR St.Louis, a stylish bar in the heart of Kanazawa's nightlife district. This long-established bar showcases a vibrant array of alcoholic beverages, including creative cocktails and a noteworthy selection of whiskey, making it a haven for both connoisseurs and casual drinkers alike. The bar's commitment to quality is evident in its use of freshly squeezed ingredients, elevating traditional cocktail experiences with refreshing twists that delight the palate.

I ordered a classic cocktail and settled into a comfortable seat, soaking in the lively atmosphere. The bartenders were true mixologists, crafting each drink with precision and flair. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, reflecting on all that I had seen and experienced.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Tentokuin, Saigawa-Ōhashi Bridge and Shirakawa-go. I'm particularly excited about visiting Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its traditional gassho-style farmhouses. I've heard so much about its beauty, and I can't wait to experience it firsthand. Before that I'll have breakfast at Kagaya Kanazawa and lunch at Turban Curry Main Store and then finish the day with dinner at Daimyo Chaya. I might even pick up a souvenir at the Museum Shop!
Kanazawa continues to captivate me with its unique blend of culture, history, and culinary delights. Each day brings new discoveries and unforgettable experiences. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with you, and I hope that my journey inspires you to explore the world and embrace the beauty of different cultures.
Until tomorrow,
