Exploring the Cultural Riches of Kanazawa
Day 5: Unveiling Kanazawa's Hidden Gems: Temples, Shrines, and Tea Houses
Explore Kanazawa's enchanting Myouryuji Temple, Ishiura Shrine, and Kazuemachi Chaya District. A cultural journey through Japan's hidden treasures.
Kanazawa's Secrets Revealed
Today was a deep dive into the heart of Kanazawa, exploring places where history and local culture intertwine. It's fascinating how much a single day can reveal about a city's past and present. From ninja temples to serene shrines and geisha districts, Kanazawa continues to surprise and enchant me.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Gyohan. This long-standing restaurant, with over 120 years of history, serves up Kaga cuisine, allowing diners to enjoy local dishes made with seasonal vegetables and fish. I opted for the Seafood Rice Bowl and Seasonal Hokuriku Cuisine Set, which featured fish fresh from the Omicho Market. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

First on the agenda was Myouryuji, famously known as the Ninja Temple. Despite its nickname, it has no actual association with ninjas. The temple earned its moniker due to its many deceptive defenses. Originally established as a small prayer hall in 1583, it was rebuilt in 1643 by Maeda Toshitsune, who designed it as a secret fortress. The Tokugawa Shogunate had banned defensive structures and buildings over two stories high, so Myouryuji was cleverly constructed to appear as a two-story building from the outside, while actually being four stories tall with seven layers inside.

The temple is filled with hidden stairs and rooms, trap pits, underground tunnels, and a watchtower. During the Edo period, the Maeda clan considered the temples in Teramachi as a shield, adding a number of functions to Myouryuji so that it would work as a lookout post and fort. The temple has 23 rooms connected by 29 staircases. One staircase has a hidden trapdoor leading to the servants' room, allowing guards to attack unsuspecting intruders. There's also a well in the center of the building that is said to connect to Kanazawa Castle via a secret tunnel, though this has never been verified.
The temple's deceptive architecture is a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Maeda clan in preserving their domain.
After navigating the Ninja Temple’s fascinating interior, I headed to Ishiura Shrine. Said to have been built about 1500 years ago, it is considered the oldest shrine in Kanazawa. Originally built in the Tensho Era, it was moved to its current location in 1880. This shrine is known for attracting many female visitors who want to find their soulmates. The shrine is also known for its cute mascots, particularly a little white dog that has become its symbol.

Ishiura Shrine is surrounded by over 255 trees, forming an oasis in the city center. Kanazawa City designated it a Preserved Forest in 1983. The shrine is also known for its polka-dot patterned charms, which are said to mean “all is well”. The shrine has a big votive light that once served as a light for the area.
For lunch, I ventured to Nyumba, a modern izakaya that blends traditional Japanese cuisine with contemporary dining. The warm ambiance and stylish decor create an inviting atmosphere. The menu features a variety of dishes, from fresh sashimi to grilled skewers, along with local sake and craft beers. I enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere and the chance to immerse myself in the local dining scene.

In the afternoon, I strolled through the Kazuemachi Chaya District. This is one of Kanazawa's three chaya districts, along with Higashi Chaya and Nishi Chaya. Kazuemachi is characterized by its narrow alleys and shops with lattice patterns. The district was named after Tomita Kazue's residence in the Edo period. Situated along the Asanogawa River, Kazuemachi is home to traditional ryokans and teahouses.

The Kazuemachi Chaya District has been designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. At dusk, when the lights come on, the atmosphere becomes truly magical. As I wandered down the narrow alleys, I found the quaint “Akari-zaka” (Bright Alley) and “Kuragari-zaka” (Dark Alley). The occasional sound of the shamisen added to the charm.
Before dinner, I stopped by Hakuichi Kanazawa Hyakubangai Store to explore Kanazawa's famous gold leaf products. Kanazawa produces over 90% of Japan's gold leaf, with the technology dating back to the 16th century. Hakuichi offers a wide variety of gold leaf-decorated crafts, cosmetics, and confectionery. I picked up some gold leaf blotting paper for Aoife and a small piece of edible gold leaf to add to my sake back at the hotel.

Dinner was at MAKIHARA cave à manger, a hidden counter-only French restaurant. The cozy atmosphere and carefully selected ingredients made for a special dining experience. I opted for the 4-dish course and enjoyed the casual French cuisine. The roasted duck and wagyu beef were particularly delicious.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Kanazawa Utatsuyama Kogei Kobo to see local artisans at work, explore The Old Site of Mr. Kurando Terashima's House, and wander through Omicho Market. I might even treat myself to a drink at JIGGER BAR St.Louis in the evening. It's hard to believe I'm already halfway through my trip; time really does fly when you're immersed in such a rich cultural experience.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm reminded of how much history is woven into the fabric of Kanazawa. It's a city that respects its past while embracing the present, and I feel privileged to be able to witness it firsthand. The blend of temples, shrines, and tea houses offers a glimpse into the soul of Japan, and I'm eager to uncover even more of its secrets in the days to come.
Until tomorrow,
David.
