A Day of Cascades and Cuisine

Today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of Yakushima's waterfalls and diving headfirst into its unique culinary scene. The island's reputation for receiving an abundance of rain – some locals joke it rains 35 days a month – certainly contributes to the stunning cascades that are scattered throughout its landscape. With my trusty camera in hand and a keen sense of adventure, I set out to explore some of the most spectacular falls, and sample some of the local food.

Our first stop of the day was the majestic Ohko Waterfall. The drive there was an experience in itself, winding along the coastal roads, the vibrant green of the forest contrasting against the deep blue of the ocean. It was a bit of a trek from Miyanoura, about an hour if you drive counterclockwise around the island, but well worth it.

As we approached Ohko Waterfall, the air grew noticeably cooler and the sound of rushing water filled our ears. Emerging from the trees, the sight that greeted us was simply breathtaking. The falls are listed as one of Japan's best 100 waterfalls, and I could certainly see why. The water plunged down from a height of 88 meters, crashing into a pool below with tremendous force. The mist rising from the base created a shimmering halo, and I couldn't resist getting a little closer, even though it meant getting slightly wet from the spray. It was a hot day, so the spray felt quite refreshing. I managed to snap a few photos, trying to capture the sheer power and beauty of the scene. The observation area was easily accessible, and I noticed it was wheelchair friendly, which is great.

Nature's beauty is a symphony of sights, sounds, and flavors, best experienced with open eyes and an adventurous palate.

Next on the agenda was Ryujin Falls. Located between Toroki and Senpiro, it wasn't quite as easily accessible as Ohko, but still visible from the road. Although the view wasn't as clear as some of the other falls, it was definitely worth a look. I was captivated by the sight of the water cascading down the rocks, surrounded by lush greenery. It felt like stepping into a scene from a movie.

After a morning spent chasing waterfalls, it was time to refuel. We started our culinary journey with breakfast at Michikusa. I decided to try one of their set meals, which featured local flavors. The food was delicious and gave me a real taste of Yakushima's regional cuisine. It was the perfect way to start the day.

For lunch, we ventured to Subarashi Indian Restaurant. I know, Indian food in Japan might sound a bit out of place, but I had heard great things about it. Plus, sometimes you just need a break from Japanese cuisine, as much as I love it. I opted for one of their vegetarian curries, making sure to specify no dairy to keep it vegan-friendly. The curry was flavorful and satisfying, and it was nice to have a change of pace. I later found out that they have another branch in Tanegashima, which is good to know in case I ever find myself there.

As evening approached, we headed to a heavenly kitchen for dinner. This small, plant-based restaurant uses local fruits and vegetables to create unique and flavorful dishes. The restaurant only has one table and is located in the owner's house, which made for a very intimate and personal dining experience. I tried one of their set menus, which included a sushi set. The presentation was beautiful, and the food was delicious. It was a bit pricey, but definitely worth it for the experience.

To end the day, we decided to check out Fisherman's Bar NINA. I had read some good things about this place, and I was curious to see what it was like. The bar had a cool, local vibe, and the artwork on the door was quite interesting. I enjoyed a drink and chatted with some of the locals, soaking in the atmosphere. I heard that the fish served here is caught the same day, so it's incredibly fresh.

As I sit here reflecting on the day, I am struck by the incredible natural beauty and culinary diversity that Yakushima has to offer. It's a place where you can immerse yourself in nature, explore hidden waterfalls, and indulge in unique and flavorful cuisine. I'm already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring. Tomorrow, we plan to delve into the island's history and heritage with visits to the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore and the Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center. I'm also excited to try some gelato at Yakushima Gelato Sora-Umi.

I'm glad I remembered to pack my camera for this trip. I almost forgot it, and it's become an essential part of my travel kit. Emily always teases me about how much I use it, but these memories are worth capturing. I should probably remember to get a portable phone charger too, as I almost ran out of battery today!

Yakushima continues to surprise and delight me at every turn. I can't wait to see what other hidden gems this island has in store.

Until tomorrow,
David
