Day 7: A Day of Ancient Wonders: Exploring Todai-ji's Hidden Halls
Discover the serene beauty of Todai-ji's lesser-known halls, a culinary adventure, and a shopping spree in Nara, Japan with family.
Discovering Nara's Spiritual Heart: Todai-ji's Hidden Gems
Today was a day of delving deeper into the historical and spiritual heart of Nara. It's easy to get caught up in the grandeur of the Great Buddha Hall, but today, Aoife, Liam and I ventured beyond the main attraction to explore some of Todai-ji's more secluded and equally fascinating corners. We savored local flavors and even managed a bit of souvenir shopping.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Wakakusa Curry. I opted for their signature Wakakusa Curry, a vibrant green curry made with spinach and other healthy vegetables. It wasn't overly spicy, but had a comforting warmth that was perfect for starting the day. Aoife chose a milder tomato-based curry, while Liam, ever the adventurous one, went for the spiciest option they had. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore Todai-ji. I was glad to find a restaurant that catered for my family's different tastes, and it was nice to try a local dish with a creative twist.

Our first stop was Todai-ji Hokkedo (Sangatsudo, March Hall). As we approached, the hall exuded an aura of ancient serenity. Built between 740 and 747 AD, it's considered Todai-ji's oldest structure. Inside, the air was cool and still, a welcome respite from the August heat. The main figure, Fukukensaku Kannon, a multi-armed Kannon statue, was truly awe-inspiring. Surrounded by ten other figures, including fierce warrior kings, the hall felt like stepping back in time. I was particularly struck by the intricate details of the statues, each one telling a silent story of faith and artistry. Aoife, with her librarian's eye for detail, pointed out the delicate craftsmanship of the crowns and halos, while Liam was fascinated by the fierce expressions of the warrior figures. Photography wasn't allowed, but the experience was etched in our memories. It's easy to see why this hall is considered a special place for prayer, a place where you can truly sense the devotion of people from centuries past.

The quiet corners of ancient places often whisper the loudest stories.
Next on our itinerary was Todai-ji Nigatsu-do. Located east of the Great Buddha Hall, on the hillside of Mount Wakakusa, Nigatsu-do offered stunning views of Nara. The climb up the stairs was a bit steep, but the vista from the balcony was well worth the effort. The hall itself has a fascinating history, founded in 752 and rebuilt in 1669 after a fire. It's famous for the Shuni-e ceremony, held annually since 760. Though we weren't there for the ceremony, I could imagine the hall filled with light and chanting, a powerful display of spiritual devotion. Aoife and I took a moment to simply soak in the panoramic view, while Liam explored the surrounding buildings. Nigatsu-do felt like a place of quiet contemplation, a spot to reflect on the passage of time and the enduring power of faith.

Before lunch, we made our way to Todaiji Nandaimon (Great South Gate). This massive wooden gate, rebuilt in the late 12th century, is an impressive example of traditional Japanese temple architecture. The two Nio guardian statues flanking the gate were particularly striking, their fierce expressions and muscular bodies a testament to the skill of the sculptors. I tried to imagine what it must have been like to pass through this gate centuries ago, a pilgrim seeking enlightenment. Liam was impressed by the sheer size of the gate, while Aoife admired the intricate bracketing system that supports the roof. It's a reminder of the enduring legacy of Todai-ji, a symbol of Nara's rich cultural heritage.

For lunch, we headed to Tsukumo, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant known for its kaiseki cuisine. The restaurant's commitment to using local ingredients and traditional techniques was evident in every dish. The presentation was exquisite, each plate a work of art. While the meal was certainly a splurge, it was a memorable culinary experience. Aoife appreciated the delicate flavors and the emphasis on seasonal ingredients, while Liam enjoyed trying new and unusual dishes. It was a reminder that Nara offers not only historical and spiritual experiences but also world-class dining.

With our bellies full, we decided to do a bit of shopping at Vierra Nara, a shopping complex inside the JR Nara Station building. It was a convenient place to pick up some souvenirs and browse local crafts. Aoife found some beautiful Nara-zuke pickles, while Liam bought a few deer-themed trinkets. I picked up a Japanese phrasebook, realizing I'd forgotten to pack our travel adapter. It was a fun way to end the day, a chance to take a little piece of Nara home with us. There were also many restaurants and cafes, ranging from fast food diners and noodle bars to an izakaya style casual restaurant and a French bistro. I even spotted a 100-yen shop, Seria, which had a variety of colorful goods.

As we headed back to the Nara Royal Hotel, I reflected on the day's adventures. We had explored ancient halls, savored local delicacies, and even indulged in a bit of retail therapy. Nara continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Kasuga Taisha Kokuhoden (Museum), Sarusawa-ike Pond, and Sagi Pond. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing the museum, as I'm always eager to learn more about the history and culture of the places we visit. And perhaps, we'll find a cozy spot in Savant for a relaxing evening drink to cap off the day.
