A Day of Discovery in Nara

Today was a day of contrasts and delightful surprises here in Nara. From the serene atmosphere of ancient temples to the dazzling displays of a modern goldfish museum, Nara continues to enchant. The food, as always, was a highlight, offering a comforting taste of home and exciting new flavors. It’s hard to believe this incredible journey with Aoife and Liam is almost over, but we’re determined to soak up every last bit of Japanese culture.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Izasa-Nakatani-hompo Yumekaze-hiroba. Nestled near Todai-ji Temple, this restaurant offered a unique start to the day with its Kaki-no-ha-sushi, sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves. Aoife opted for the traditional set, while Liam, ever the adventurous one, tried the steamed sushi. I stuck with a classic, savoring the familiar flavors that reminded me of our little sushi spot back in Dublin. It was a pleasant experience, and the staff were incredibly accommodating. The view of the Great Buddha Hall from our window seat added a touch of magic to the morning.

Fueled and ready, we headed to the Todai-ji Museum. As an antiques dealer, I always appreciate the chance to examine historical artifacts up close. The museum houses a remarkable collection of Buddhist art, including sculptures, paintings, and historical documents related to Todai-ji Temple. The replicas of the Great Buddha's hands at the entrance were awe-inspiring. Inside, Liam was particularly captivated by the Gigaku masks, explaining that they were used in ancient dance-dramas. Aoife, with her librarian's eye for detail, was fascinated by the intricate details of the Thousand-armed Kannon statue. The museum provided a calm and quiet space to reflect on the rich history of Japanese Buddhism.

Next on our itinerary was Naratsuhiko Jinja, a Shinto shrine dedicated to Prince Shiki and other deities. The shrine offered a peaceful contrast to the bustling atmosphere around Todai-ji. Surrounded by lush greenery and tranquil pathways, it felt like a serene escape. We took our time wandering through the grounds, admiring the traditional Japanese architecture and the ancient camphor tree that stood proudly behind the main hall. Liam, always drawn to local traditions, was intrigued by the Okinamai dance, a traditional performance held at the shrine's autumn festival. Aoife found the shrine's history fascinating, noting its connection to Emperor Konin and its role in local religious practices.

Lunch called, and we ventured to China Dining Hiten, a Chinese restaurant near Nara Station. After days of traditional Japanese cuisine, we were all craving something a bit different. The restaurant had a welcoming atmosphere, and we were quickly seated in a private booth separated by curtains. Aoife, always on the lookout for vegan options, was delighted to find a separate vegan menu. She ordered the sweet and sour tofu, while Liam went for the spicy beef ramen. I chose the shrimp tofu, a dish that reminded me of my favorite Chinese takeout back in Montpelier. The food was delicious and comforting, a welcome change of pace.

In the afternoon, we decided to embrace the unexpected and visited the NARA KINGYO MUSEUM. I must admit, I was initially skeptical. A museum dedicated to goldfish? But it turned out to be one of the most surprisingly delightful experiences of the trip. The museum was a riot of color and creativity, with thousands of goldfish displayed in uniquely themed tanks. Liam was particularly impressed by the trick eye art, where he posed for photos that made it look like he was riding a giant goldfish. Aoife loved the flower-themed display, where tanks of goldfish were mounted on a wall of vibrant blooms. The museum was a sensory overload in the best possible way, a testament to the Japanese ability to turn even the most mundane subject into a work of art.

As evening approached, we sought out a place to unwind and reflect on the day. Old Time, a local bar, offered the perfect setting. The bar had a cozy, intimate atmosphere, and the bartender was friendly and knowledgeable. Liam ordered a local beer, while Aoife and I opted for Japanese whiskey. We chatted about our favorite moments of the day, from the serene beauty of Naratsuhiko Jinja to the quirky charm of the Goldfish Museum. It was a perfect way to end another memorable day in Japan.

For dinner, we decided on Baku Izakaya, a traditional Japanese tavern. We wanted to experience a classic izakaya, and Baku did not disappoint. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and the menu was filled with a variety of small dishes perfect for sharing. We ordered yakitori, sashimi, and some local sake. The food was delicious, and the sake was smooth and flavorful. It was a great way to immerse ourselves in Japanese culture and enjoy a relaxed evening together.

As we walked back to the Nara Royal Hotel, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. Nara had once again exceeded our expectations, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and culinary delights. Tomorrow marks the last day of our trip, and we plan to make the most of it. We're planning a visit to Mt. Kasuga Primeval Forest for a nature walk, followed by a tour of the Nara Brewing Company and the Imanishi Sake Brewery. We'll end our trip with a final dinner at Uma-no-me, savoring the last moments of our Japanese adventure. It's been an unforgettable experience, one that I know we'll cherish for years to come.
