Finding Peace in Nara's Quiet Corners

Today, on the eleventh day of our family adventure in Nara, we sought out the quieter, less-trodden paths of this ancient city. Away from the bustling deer park and famous temples, we discovered serene landscapes, literary history, and the simple joys of local life. It’s amazing how much a change of pace can refresh the spirit, especially when traveling with the family.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Unagino Kawahara. I decided to try the Unagi, grilled eel, which they prepare using traditional techniques passed down through generations. It was a flavorful start to the day, and it certainly gave me the energy I needed for our explorations. Aoife enjoyed the warm and inviting atmosphere, reflecting Japan's rich cultural heritage. Liam, ever the adventurous one, even tried a bit of the eel spine, much to my surprise!

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.

Our first stop was Saho Seseragi no Sato, a place that has preserved 1,400 years of tradition and history. The gentle stream and lush greenery created a perfect backdrop for a morning stroll. It was a welcome escape from the city, and the kids enjoyed the open space. We spent a good hour simply walking along the paths, enjoying the sounds of the flowing water. The area was enchanting, and I can only imagine how much more beautiful it would be during the cherry blossom season.

Next on our itinerary was Naramachi Odori Street. This beautifully preserved historical area felt like stepping back in time. The traditional townhouses, or 'machiya,' with their stunning wooden architecture, were a sight to behold. We wandered through the charming storefronts, filled with local crafts and artisanal goods. I picked up a few souvenirs, including some unique stationery from Hands Nara Store. Aoife was particularly fascinated by the small museums and galleries that provided insight into Nara's rich history and artistic heritage.

For lunch, we ventured to onwa, a charming little restaurant with vegan and gluten-free options. Aoife was delighted, as she always appreciates finding places that cater to her dietary preferences. I opted for the karaage bowl, which was delicious and healthy, with fresh vegetables and tasty rice. Liam tried the Vegan Delight plate, which had a little bit of everything. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. It’s a great spot if you're looking for a healthy and tasty meal.

After lunch, we visited Shiga Naoya's Old Residence, the former home of one of Japan's most celebrated authors. It was fascinating to see where Shiga Naoya, often referred to as the God of the Novel in Japanese literary circles, lived and worked. The traditional sukiya-zukuri architecture was beautiful, and the garden provided a peaceful escape. I could almost feel the literary energy in the air as we walked through the rooms where he penned his masterpieces. The residence incorporated both Japanese and Western design elements. It served as a literary salon where members of the Shirakaba school gathered to discuss literature and art. Shiga’s house was designed in the traditional Sukiya style with some modern western elements.

In the late afternoon, we did a little more shopping at Hands Nara Store. This department store is chock-full of unique Japanese products. I was on the lookout for a travel adapter, as I realized I had forgotten to pack one. We found a variety of interesting items, from high-quality living ware to the latest Japanese stationery. Liam was particularly drawn to the DIY kits, while Aoife admired the fancy made-in-Japan bags.

For dinner, we decided to try Le Case, a restaurant known for its casual French cuisine and quiche. The quiche was delicious, with a light and flaky crust and a flavorful filling. It was a perfect way to end the day, and the cozy atmosphere made it even more enjoyable. We took the Nara Kotsu bus to Kasuga Taisha Main Hall. I paired my quiche with Kaze no Mori sake from Nara.

As we head into our final full day here in Nara tomorrow, we plan to visit the Todai-ji Museum, Naratsuhiko Jinja, and the NARA KINGYO MUSEUM. It's hard to believe our trip is coming to an end. I am planning to have breakfast at Izasa-Nakatani-hompo Yumekaze-hiroba, lunch at China Dining Hiten and dinner at Baku Izakaya. We might even stop by Old Time bar for a nightcap.

Today was a reminder that sometimes the best travel experiences come from venturing off the beaten path and embracing the unexpected. I'm grateful for these moments of peace and discovery with my family, and I look forward to sharing more of our adventures with you all.

I’m particularly glad we could experience some of the local events, like the Obon festival, which added a special touch to our visit. It’s these cultural moments that truly enrich a trip and create lasting memories.
