Finding Serenity in Nara's Secret Gardens & Temples

Today was a day of quiet contemplation and exploration, a gentle departure from the bustling tourist trails of Nara. Aoife and Liam joined me as we sought out the hidden corners of this ancient city, discovering serene gardens and peaceful temples that offered a glimpse into the soul of Japan. It's days like these that remind me why I love travel so much – the chance to slow down, breathe, and connect with a place on a deeper level.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Surugamachi's Okonomiyakiya. It was a cozy spot, tucked away from the main streets, where the savory aroma of okonomiyaki filled the air. We shared a couple of these delicious savory pancakes, which gave us the perfect energy boost for the day ahead. Liam, ever the adventurous eater, was particularly taken with the variety of toppings and sauces. Aoife and I enjoyed the comforting, home-style cooking, reminiscent of simpler times.

With our bellies full, we set off to explore the Garden of the Former Daijyo-in Temple. This garden, once part of a prominent temple, is a beautifully restored oasis of calm. As we strolled along the picturesque paths, centered around a tranquil lake, I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace wash over me. The meticulous landscaping and the gentle rustling of leaves created a serene atmosphere, perfect for quiet reflection. Aoife, with her librarian's appreciation for history, was fascinated by the garden's past and its connection to the powerful Kofuku-ji Temple. Liam, meanwhile, enjoyed wandering the paths and taking photographs of the vibrant greenery. It's amazing how a place like this can transport you to another time, away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

The true beauty of a place lies not just in its grand landmarks, but in the quiet corners where you can connect with its soul.

Next on our list was Yoshikien Garden, a delightful Japanese garden named after the Yoshikigawa River that borders it. This garden, built on the site of former priest residences of Kofuku-ji Temple, offers three distinct garden styles: a pond garden, a moss garden, and a tea ceremony garden. Each area had its own unique charm, from the vibrant greenery surrounding the pond to the tranquil seclusion of the moss garden. Aoife was particularly drawn to the tea ceremony garden, imagining the elegant rituals that must have taken place there. Liam, always eager to explore, loved discovering the hidden pathways and little nooks throughout the garden. For me, the highlight was the moss garden, a carpet of soft green that felt like stepping into another world. I took a moment to simply sit and listen to the gentle sounds of nature, a welcome respite from the noise of the city. I found it particularly interesting that foreign tourists can enter for free by showing their passport.

After our garden visits, we were ready for a bite to eat. We headed to Silk Road Dining for lunch, drawn in by its promise of exotic flavors and a relaxing atmosphere. The restaurant lived up to its name, offering a diverse menu inspired by the cuisines of the Silk Road. I opted for a flavorful curry, while Aoife enjoyed a delicate noodle dish. Liam, of course, chose the spiciest option on the menu, much to our amusement. The meal was a delightful culinary journey, a perfect complement to our day of exploration.

Our final stop of the day was Byakugoji Temple, a bit further afield but well worth the journey. This temple, perched on a hill overlooking Nara, offered stunning panoramic views of the city. The temple itself was steeped in history, with a number of Important Cultural Properties to admire. As we climbed the steps to the main hall, we were greeted by a sense of tranquility and reverence. Aoife, with her deep knowledge of history, shared stories of the temple's past, while Liam marveled at the intricate details of the architecture. I was particularly moved by the Seated Statue of Amida Nyorai, a beautiful example of Heian-era craftsmanship. The temple grounds were spacious and quiet, allowing for a leisurely visit. Although it wasn't the season for the famous five-colored camellias, I could imagine how beautiful they must be in bloom. The view from the top was breathtaking, with the city of Nara spread out before us and Mount Ikoma in the distance. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration, a moment of quiet contemplation amidst the beauty of nature and history.

Before heading back to the hotel, we made a quick stop at Ezuya, a charming souvenir shop in Nara. This store is known for its locally crafted items, offering a wide selection of traditional crafts, ceramics, textiles, and snacks. We picked up a few small gifts for friends and family back home, wanting to share a piece of Nara with them. Liam was particularly taken with the Nara-themed mascot merchandise, while Aoife found some beautiful Japanese paper products. I opted for a traditional ceramic tea set, a reminder of the peaceful moments we had shared in the gardens of Nara.

For dinner, we decided to try The Olive Dining, a restaurant recommended for its modern take on Japanese cuisine. The atmosphere was lively and the menu was creative, offering a fusion of flavors that was both surprising and delicious. We enjoyed a variety of dishes, from fresh seafood to innovative vegetable creations. It was a fitting end to a day of discovery, a celebration of the new and the old, the traditional and the modern.

As I sit here now, reflecting on the day, I feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the hidden gems of Nara. It's easy to get caught up in the famous landmarks and crowded tourist spots, but it's often the quiet corners and unexpected discoveries that leave the most lasting impression. Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Forest Park Konoyama and the Heijo Palace Site Historical Park, continuing our journey through the history and natural beauty of Nara. I'm looking forward to another day of adventure, and to sharing our experiences with you all. We might even stop by Woo Koo Bar? in the evening. Until then, safe travels!

It’s also worth noting that, despite my meticulous planning, I completely forgot to pack a travel adapter for Japan! Thankfully, the Nara Royal Hotel was able to provide one, but it’s a good reminder to always double-check those essentials.
