Following the Water's Path

Today was a day dedicated to Iceland's natural beauty and culinary exploration. Emily and I set out to explore some of the lesser-known waterfalls and treat ourselves to the local cuisine. It’s always a treat to discover hidden gems and savor the flavors of a new place, and today was no exception.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Hótel Flúðir. The hotel itself looked very cozy and inviting. From what I gathered, the restaurant offered a taste of traditional Icelandic cuisine. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with simple yet elegant décor that created a comfortable dining experience. I decided to try their mushroom soup, which was said to be rich and savory with a touch of cream. Emily opted for the cod with mashed potatoes, a classic Icelandic dish. Fuelled up, we were ready to start our adventure.

Our first stop was Hjálparfoss, a unique waterfall where the rivers Fossá and Þjórsá meet. The drive there was scenic, taking us through Route 32, a gravel road that wound through the Vikrar lava fields. As we approached, the landscape transformed into a rugged expanse of lava rock formations and lush moss. The name 'Hjálparfoss' translates to 'Help Waterfall,' a nod to its historical significance as a place where travelers crossing the challenging Sprengisandur route would find fresh water and relief.

The waterfall itself was a sight to behold. It’s essentially two waterfalls that converge into one serene pool. The water cascades down from a lava field created by eruptions of the nearby Hekla volcano, one of Iceland's most active and unpredictable volcanoes. Emily and I spent a good hour here, taking photos and simply soaking in the tranquil atmosphere. The basalt columns surrounding the basin added to the dramatic scenery. I even spotted what looked like a bear's head in the rock formation between the falls!

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, where nature's beauty speaks volumes.

Next on our list was ÁRMÓTAFOSS, TANGAFOSS. This waterfall proved to be a bit more of a challenge to reach. We drove along road 26, near the crossing of road 32, and then took a trail at the south side of the river Þjórsá. The hike was worth it, as we were rewarded with a stunning view of the waterfall cascading gracefully amidst the rugged landscape. ÁRMÓTAFOSS is less crowded than some of Iceland's more famous waterfalls, allowing for a more intimate experience with nature.

After our waterfall adventures, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Lindin, a restaurant known for its innovative dishes and cozy atmosphere. The restaurant drew inspiration from Linden Boulevard, reflecting a microcosm of New York's melting pot culture. We decided to try their lamb chops and lobster rigatoni, both of which were highly recommended. The lamb chops were cooked to perfection, falling right off the bone, and the lobster rigatoni had a delightful kick to it. It was a culinary experience that perfectly complemented our day of exploration.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we continued our journey, eventually making our way to Vík í Mýrdal. Before dinner, we decided to check out Kjallarinn Bar, located in the basement of the Suður-Vík restaurant. This place had a unique speakeasy vibe. The bartender was clearly passionate about mixology, crafting her own cocktail recipes with excellent ingredients and amazing presentation. I tried one of her signature cocktails, while Emily opted for a classic gin and tonic. The vibe was relaxed and comfortable, making it the perfect spot to unwind after a day of hiking and sightseeing.

For dinner, we chose Drangar Restaurant, located in Hótel Kría. I had read rave reviews about its modern Icelandic cuisine made with fresh local ingredients, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant itself was stunningly beautiful, with a tea station that was particularly picturesque. I decided to try their seafood platter, which featured a variety of locally sourced fish and shellfish. Emily went for the lamb shank, another Icelandic specialty. Both dishes were cooked to perfection, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end our day of culinary and natural exploration.

As we sipped our after-dinner drinks, we reflected on the day's adventures. From the serene beauty of Hjálparfoss and ÁRMÓTAFOSS to the culinary delights of Restaurant Hótel Flúðir, Lindin, and Drangar Restaurant, it was a day filled with discovery and delight. It reinforced my love for Iceland's raw beauty and delicious cuisine.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Eldhraun lava field and Rauðaskál volcano crater. We'll also stop by Mia's Country Van for breakfast, Hunkubakkar Farm Restaurant for lunch, and Skogafoss Bistro Bar for dinner. And maybe a bit of shopping at Runes of Iceland. I'm looking forward to another day of exploring Iceland's unique landscapes and flavors. We've been incredibly lucky to have such beautiful weather during our trip, and I hope it continues as we head further east.

Back at our accommodation, I realized I forgot to pack extra batteries for the camera and a guidebook on Icelandic flora. Note to self: always double-check the essentials! Despite this minor oversight, I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. Iceland continues to surprise and amaze me at every turn.

I am excited to see what tomorrow brings. Good night from Iceland!
