Exploring the Spiritual Heart of Morocco: An 11-Day Journey in Moulay Idriss
Day 6: A Day of Discovery in Moulay Idriss: Gates, History, and Hidden Gems
Explore the spiritual heart of Morocco with me as we wander through Moulay Idriss, a city steeped in history and vibrant local life.
Stepping Back in Time in Moulay Idriss
Today, Aoife and I immersed ourselves in the captivating atmosphere of Moulay Idriss, a town that holds a special place in Morocco's spiritual and historical landscape. It's a place where the past feels very much alive, and every corner seems to whisper stories of sultans, saints, and centuries of tradition. Nestled amidst rolling hills, the town offered a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of larger cities, and we were eager to explore its hidden gems.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Moulay Idriss. I opted for traditional Moroccan pancakes with honey, while Aoife enjoyed some fresh fruit and yogurt. Fuelled up, we set out to explore the town, our first stop being Le portail de Moulay Ismaïl.

Le portail de Moulay Ismaïl: A Majestic Entrance
Le portail de Moulay Ismaïl, a massive gate, immediately captured my attention. The intricate tile work and imposing arches were a sight to behold, showcasing the artistry and grandeur of Moroccan architecture. As we stood there, taking in the view, I couldn't help but imagine the countless people who had passed through this gate over the centuries. It served as a gateway to the rich history of Meknes, commissioned by Sultan Moulay Ismaïl in the 17th century. The blend of Islamic and Baroque influences was fascinating, reflecting the diverse cultural influences that have shaped Morocco.
The portal wasn't just a visual spectacle; it was a symbol of the city's historical narrative. The surrounding area was vibrant with local life, and we enjoyed watching residents go about their daily routines. It was a perfect spot for people-watching and soaking in the local atmosphere.
The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new perspectives.
Exploring Kasabah Senhaji
Next on our list was Kasabah Senhaji, a place recommended by a local we met near the gate. This kasbah offered a tranquil escape with its beautiful garden and traditional Moroccan architecture. We spent some time wandering through the grounds, admiring the views and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.

Kasabah Senhaji is more than just a beautiful building; it's a place where you can truly experience Moroccan hospitality. The staff were incredibly welcoming, offering us mint tea and sharing stories about the history of the kasbah. Aoife, ever the librarian, was particularly interested in the stories, and she spent a good hour chatting with one of the staff members about local legends and historical events.
The riad provides accommodations with a garden, barbecue facilities, and a shared lounge. It also offers a restaurant, a 24-hour front desk, and free WiFi. The building had a sun terrace, allowing for mountain views, and the rooms were air-conditioned. Pets are also allowed.
Lunch at Café Restaurant Ksar Pharaon
By lunchtime, we were both feeling a bit peckish, so we decided to stop at Café Restaurant Ksar Pharaon for a bite to eat. This charming café offered a range of traditional Moroccan dishes, and we opted for a tagine and some couscous. The food was delicious, and the prices were very reasonable. It was the perfect spot to relax and refuel before continuing our exploration of Moulay Idriss.

As we ate, we watched the world go by, observing the locals and tourists alike. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, and we felt right at home. It's moments like these that I cherish most when traveling – the chance to slow down, soak in the local culture, and simply enjoy the moment.
Shopping at قيصرية مولاي ادريس
After lunch, we decided to do a bit of shopping at قيصرية مولاي ادريس, a local market. This bustling market was filled with vendors selling everything from spices and textiles to handicrafts and souvenirs. Aoife was in her element, haggling with the vendors and picking up a few unique items to take home. I, on the other hand, was more interested in the sights and sounds of the market. The vibrant colors, exotic smells, and lively atmosphere were a feast for the senses. It was a great opportunity to experience the local culture and support the local economy.

Dinner at Grillade Albanna
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Grillade Albanna for dinner. This popular grill restaurant was known for its delicious grilled meats and lively atmosphere. We ordered a mixed grill platter, which included a variety of kebabs, sausages, and grilled vegetables. The food was cooked to perfection, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Moulay Idriss.

We sat outside, enjoying the cool evening air and watching the locals gather for their evening meals. The atmosphere was festive and convivial, and we felt a sense of connection to the community. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with new people and experiencing new cultures.
