A Fond Farewell

As our 11-day journey through the spiritual heart of Morocco draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we’ve had in Moulay Idriss. This hidden gem, nestled in the hills, has offered us a unique blend of history, culture, and breathtaking scenery. Today, our final day, was a culmination of all that we’ve come to love about this enchanting place.

The day began, as many of our days here have, with a delightful breakfast at Scorpion House. The morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of mint tea and freshly baked bread. Sitting on the hillside, overlooking the sacred town, Aoife and I savored the moment, knowing it would soon be a memory. Mike Richardson has created a culinary destination, embodying the rich flavors of Moroccan cuisine.

After breakfast, we decided to spend our morning soaking in the atmosphere of Dar Ines Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, the recently renovated historic building where we stayed. The Dar is located a good walk down to the central square, making it easy to get around. The traditional Moroccan architecture and modern comforts offered a unique blend. The sun terrace provided a perfect spot to reflect on our journey. The staff was exceptional and did everything possible to be of assistance.

Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those that lead us back to ourselves.

For lunch, we ventured to Cafe restaurant ain zwawk مقهى و مطعم عين زواوق. This cozy spot offered a taste of local life, away from the more tourist-centric areas. The menu featured traditional Moroccan dishes, and we opted for a tagine, rich with spices and tender meat. It was a comforting and satisfying meal, a perfect representation of the authentic flavors we've come to adore.

In the afternoon, we took one last stroll through the narrow, winding streets of Moulay Idriss. The town was bustling with activity, locals going about their daily routines. We paused to admire the intricate tile work and vibrant colors that adorn the buildings, capturing the essence of Moroccan artistry. The air was filled with the sounds of bartering, laughter, and the melodic call to prayer, creating a symphony of daily life.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way to Restaurant Moulay Idriss for our final dinner in town. We sat on the terrace, overlooking the sprawling landscape, and reminisced about our adventures. From exploring the ancient ruins of Volubilis to sipping mint tea with locals, every moment has been a treasure. The top restaurants in Moulay Idriss Zerhoun include Roman City, Al Andaloussiya Diyafa, and Restaurant Volubilis.

Aoife and I spoke at length about our favorite moments. For her, it was the warmth and hospitality of the Moroccan people. She was particularly touched by the kindness of a local artisan who shared his craft with her, patiently guiding her through the process of creating a small ceramic bowl. She intends to keep that bowl on her desk, as a reminder of the trip.

For me, it was the sense of peace and tranquility that permeated Moulay Idriss. Away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, I found myself reconnecting with my thoughts and values. The experience was a welcome respite, a chance to recharge and gain a new perspective. I will miss the panoramic views of Volubilis, the Zerhoune mountain range, and Moulay Idriss.

We also realized that we had forgotten to pack an adapter for Moroccan power outlets, and a light jacket for cool evenings. A rookie mistake!

As we prepare to leave tomorrow, heading back to Casablanca for our flight to Dublin, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. This journey has been more than just a vacation; it has been an enriching experience that has touched our souls. Moulay Idriss, with its spiritual atmosphere and stunning landscapes, will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

I am already anticipating our return to Dublin and sharing our experiences with friends and family. I plan to frame some of the photographs I took, creating a visual reminder of our time in Morocco. I am also eager to try my hand at recreating some of the delicious Moroccan dishes we enjoyed, bringing a taste of Moulay Idriss into our home.

While this chapter of our Moroccan adventure comes to an end, the memories and lessons we've gained will undoubtedly stay with us for a lifetime. Until next time, Moulay Idriss, thank you for the magic.

This trip to Moulay Idriss has further cemented my love for travel and exploration. Discovering new cultures, meeting new people, and experiencing new things – these are the moments that make life truly fulfilling. As an antiques dealer, I often find myself surrounded by objects from the past, each with its own story to tell. Travel, in a way, is like stepping into a living antique, where the history and culture of a place unfold before your eyes.

Aoife and I are already discussing our next adventure. Perhaps a return to Italy, where we first met, or a journey to South America, to explore the ancient ruins of the Incas. Whatever we decide, I know it will be another opportunity to learn, grow, and create lasting memories together.

As I conclude this blog series, I want to express my sincere gratitude to all of you who have followed along on our journey. Your comments, questions, and encouragement have made this experience even more rewarding. I hope that our adventures have inspired you to embark on your own explorations, to seek out the hidden gems of the world, and to embrace the beauty and diversity of our planet.

Until next time, safe travels and happy discoveries!
