Finding Balance in Serra da Estrela

Today was a day of unexpected discoveries and quiet contemplation amidst the stunning landscapes of Serra da Estrela. Leaving behind the familiar comforts of Toronto, I sought to immerse myself in the raw beauty of Portugal's highlands. And today, the mountains certainly delivered. It was a day that reminded me why I crave these solo adventures – the freedom to wander, to ponder, and to simply be.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Paragem Serradalto. Nestled in Manteigas, the restaurant provided not only a delicious start to the day but also breathtaking views of the Zêzere Valley. Fuelled up with local flavors, I set off towards my first destination: the Miradouro do Penedo c'Abana, also known as the Swinging Stone.

The drive itself was an experience, winding through narrow mountain roads that offered glimpses of the vast, rugged landscape. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth – a welcome change from the city air I'm accustomed to. As an urban planner, I often find myself thinking about the delicate balance between human development and preserving natural spaces. Serra da Estrela, with its protected park status, is a testament to the importance of that balance.

Arriving at the Miradouro do Penedo c'Abana, I was immediately struck by the panoramic views. The landscape stretched out before me, a tapestry of rolling hills, forests, and the distant shimmer of the Vouga River. The 'swinging stone' itself was a sight to behold – a massive rock formation seemingly balanced precariously on the edge of the mountain. I spent a good hour there, simply absorbing the scenery and feeling a sense of connection to the ancient forces that shaped this land. It was a bit of a meditative experience, really. I even took a video to show Olivia later. I know she would have loved to see it too.

Sometimes, the greatest discoveries are not places, but new ways of seeing.

From the Miradouro, I ventured towards Lagoa Escondida, or the Hidden Lagoon. The name itself conjured images of a secret oasis, and I was eager to see if reality matched the allure. The drive was a bit more challenging, with the roads becoming narrower and more winding. But the anticipation kept me going. As someone who enjoys hiking, I was looking forward to stretching my legs and immersing myself in the natural beauty of the area.

The hike to Lagoa Escondida was relatively short but offered a delightful immersion into the local flora. The trail wound through a forest of evergreens, with sunlight filtering through the canopy, creating a mosaic of light and shadow on the forest floor. The air was filled with the sounds of birdsong and the rustling of leaves. I paused frequently to take photos, wanting to capture the serene beauty of the place. It reminded me a bit of some of the conservation areas we have around Toronto, but with a uniquely Portuguese charm.

Finally, I reached the lagoon. And it was indeed hidden, tucked away in a small valley, surrounded by rocky hills. The water was crystal clear, reflecting the sky above, creating a mirror-like surface. It was a scene of perfect tranquility, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me. I found a quiet spot by the shore and simply sat there for a while, listening to the gentle lapping of the water and feeling the warmth of the sun on my face. It was moments like these that made the trip worthwhile – a chance to escape the noise and stress of city life and reconnect with nature.

For lunch, I stopped at O Chalet, a mountain restaurant that's in the heart of the Serra da Estrela Ski resort. It was nice to relax and have a hearty meal after a long day of exploring. I was famished! The restaurant had a wonderful view too and seemed like a popular spot for skiers during the winter months. I can imagine Olivia would love this place, especially in the winter when there's snow everywhere.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I made a quick stop at Recados da Montanha, a local shop offering regional products. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs for Olivia and some local delicacies to bring back home. The shop was filled with traditional handicrafts, cheeses, and cured meats – a true celebration of the region's culinary heritage. I ended up buying some local cheese and a small handcrafted wolf figurine for Olivia. I know she'll appreciate the gesture.

Dinner was at Monte Estrela, a restaurant recommended by a local I met earlier in the day. The restaurant offered traditional Portuguese cuisine, and I decided to try the trout with pickled sauce, which was delicious. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and I enjoyed chatting with the staff and learning more about the region's history and culture.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful corner of the world. Serra da Estrela has a way of captivating the soul, of reminding us of the simple joys of life – the beauty of nature, the warmth of human connection, and the pleasure of discovery. Tomorrow, I'm planning to visit Fonte de Santo António da Argenteira and Lagoa Serrano. Another day, another adventure!

I'm also thinking of Olivia a lot. I miss her terribly, but I know she's cheering me on from back home. I'm already looking forward to sharing my experiences with her and planning our next adventure together. Perhaps we can come back to Serra da Estrela together someday. I think she'd love it here.

For now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of exploration. Goodnight from Serra da Estrela!
