Nature's Embrace: Akchour Waterfalls and Jebel Bouhachem
Today was a day dedicated to the raw, unfiltered beauty that surrounds Chefchaouen. Leaving the mesmerizing blue alleys behind, Francisca, Nilton and I ventured into the Rif Mountains, seeking out the famed Akchour Waterfalls and the serene Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve. It was a day of hiking, breathtaking views, and a deeper connection with Morocco's natural soul.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Al Wiam. This charming spot, run by a group of friendly women, offered a cozy setting and a taste of authentic Moroccan cuisine. I savored the traditional flavors, knowing we needed the energy for the adventures ahead. Nilton was especially fond of the Moroccan pancakes, and Francisca enjoyed the mint tea, a staple here. As a tour guide, I always appreciate a good start to the day with a delicious and authentic meal.
Fueled and ready, we set off towards Akchour Waterfalls. The drive itself was a treat, with the landscape transforming as we ascended into the mountains. The air grew crisper, and the views became more panoramic. I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement bubbling up – a feeling I always cherish when exploring new places with my family.
The hike to the waterfalls was an experience in itself. The trail wound through lush greenery, with the sound of rushing water growing louder with each step. Nilton, ever the curious explorer, was fascinated by the diverse flora and fauna we encountered along the way. I pointed out different plants and explained their traditional uses, turning our hike into an impromptu lesson on local botany. Francisca, with her keen eye for detail, captured the beauty of the surroundings with her camera, preserving these moments for us to relive later.
The beauty of nature lies not just in what you see, but in what it awakens within you.
Reaching the Akchour Waterfalls was a truly rewarding experience. The cascading water, plunging into the cool pools below, created a scene of serene beauty. We took some time to simply soak it all in, the sound of the water washing away any lingering stress. Nilton, of course, couldn't resist dipping his toes in the water, letting out a shriek as the cold hit him. Even though it was May, the mountain air kept the water refreshingly brisk.
For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant Terrasse Djebli. The restaurant lived up to its name, offering a stunning terrace view of Chefchaouen nestled in the mountains. The tagine was flavorful and satisfying, and the mint tea, once again, was the perfect accompaniment. As we ate, we recounted our favorite moments from the hike, laughing and sharing stories. These are the moments I cherish most – the simple joy of being together, surrounded by beauty, and sharing a delicious meal.
In the afternoon, we ventured into Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve. This protected area is a haven for biodiversity, boasting forests of oak and maritime pines. We chose a relatively easy trail, wanting to enjoy a leisurely walk rather than a strenuous hike. The air was filled with the sounds of birdsong, and the sunlight filtering through the trees created a magical atmosphere. Though we didn't spot any Barbary macaques, I kept an eye out, knowing they inhabit this area.
Before heading back to our guesthouse, we stopped by Chefchaouen crafts. I wanted to find a few unique souvenirs to remind us of our time here. The medina was bustling with activity, and the shops were filled with colorful textiles, pottery, and leather goods. Francisca, with her sharp eye for quality, helped me select a few beautiful pieces. We picked up some hand-woven blankets, a few small leather goods, and some spices to bring back to Lisbon. I even found a vintage postcard of Chefchaouen to add to my collection, a hobby that connects me to the past and the stories of places I visit.
As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the blue city, we made our way back to Maison D'hôtes Afassi. I reflected on the day's adventures, feeling a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. Chefchaouen continues to surprise and delight us, revealing new facets of its beauty with each passing day.
Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into Chefchaouen's cultural heart, exploring the Blue Medina Tours and the Bouzafer Mosque. I'm eager to learn more about the city's history and traditions, and to share these insights with you, my readers. For dinner, we're considering Restaurant Bab Kasaba. Until then, good night from the Blue Pearl of Morocco.
I must remember to buy new sunglasses tomorrow, I forgot mine at home!
