A Day of Immersion in the Blue Pearl

Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Chefchaouen, a city that continues to enchant me with its serene blue hues and vibrant culture. Francisca, Nilton and I set out early, eager to explore the spots that define this Moroccan gem. We decided to leave the guide book at the hotel today, and just wander and see what we could find. It was amazing!

Our morning began with a refreshing visit to Ras El Ma. The spring was a welcome respite from the bustling medina. The sound of the water cascading down the small waterfalls was incredibly soothing, a perfect way to start the day. Seeing the local women washing clothes in the stream, just as they have for centuries, offered a glimpse into the daily life here, a beautiful blend of tradition and nature. Nilton was fascinated by the small cascades and the way the water flowed through the rocks; he even tried to catch a fish with his bare hands, much to the amusement of the local kids. I made sure to keep a close eye on him, remembering my own childhood adventures back in Tarrafal, Cabo Verde, where exploring the natural streams was a daily joy. Though, I must say, the streams back home were never this blue!

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its colors, but in the stories whispered through its ancient streets and flowing waters.

Next on our itinerary was Plaza Uta el Hamman, the bustling heart of Chefchaouen. The square was alive with activity – locals and tourists alike gathered to enjoy the morning sun and the lively atmosphere. We sat at Cafe Clock, sipping on traditional mint tea, watching the world go by. The architecture surrounding the plaza is stunning, with the Kasbah and the Grand Mosque standing as proud reminders of the city's rich history. Nilton was particularly intrigued by the octagonal minaret of the Grand Mosque, constantly asking questions about its design and purpose. It reminded me of explaining the intricate details of Lisbon's cathedrals to tourists, each structure holding a story worth telling. Francisca enjoyed browsing the artisan shops, picking up a few small souvenirs – a beautifully embroidered scarf and a hand-painted ceramic bowl – to remind us of our trip.

After soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of Plaza Uta el Hamman, we decided to immerse ourselves further in the local culture with a visit to the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen. Housed within the Kasbah, the museum offered a fascinating insight into the history and traditions of the region. The exhibits showcased a diverse collection of artifacts, from traditional costumes and jewelry to musical instruments and ancient weapons. I was particularly drawn to the displays on Berber culture, recognizing elements that resonated with my own Cabo Verdean heritage. Francisca was captivated by the intricate embroidery and weaving, sparking conversations about the similarities and differences with traditional Portuguese embroidery. Nilton, surprisingly, was most interested in the ancient weapons, peppering me with questions about their use and history. The museum truly brought the history of Chefchaouen to life, providing a deeper understanding of the cultural influences that have shaped this unique city.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves seeking a place to unwind and reflect on our experiences. We stumbled upon Restaurant Bar Chaouen, a cozy spot known for its relaxed ambiance. We sat on the terrace, enjoying a refreshing drink as we recounted the highlights of our day. The atmosphere was laid-back and welcoming, with locals and tourists mingling and sharing stories. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration, a moment to savor the magic of Chefchaouen and appreciate the connections we had made.

Tomorrow, we plan to venture a bit further afield, exploring the Waterfalls Akchour and the Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve. I'm looking forward to experiencing the natural beauty that surrounds Chefchaouen, and sharing those experiences with my family. I am also excited to buy some crafts tomorrow.

Chefchaouen continues to surprise and delight me at every turn. It is a city that invites you to slow down, to wander, and to discover its hidden gems. From the serene beauty of Ras El Ma to the vibrant energy of Plaza Uta el Hamman and the cultural richness of the Ethnographic Museum, today was a day of immersion and connection. As I reflect on our experiences, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share this enchanting city with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime. I am happy to have Francisca and Nilton with me on this trip. I'm also very happy that I didn't forget my travel journal [Moroccan dirham, journal for notes]!

My only regret is that I forgot my sunglasses [Sunglasses]! I need to buy a pair tomorrow.
