Finding Peace and History in Bolgatanga

Today was a day of contrasts, blending serene natural beauty with poignant historical reflection. As we continue our family adventure in Bolgatanga, Ghana, Francisca, Nilton, and I sought to immerse ourselves further in the local culture and find moments of peace amidst our explorations. It was a day filled with good food, thoughtful contemplation, and the simple joys of being together.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Aque Allah Special Waakye. I had heard so much about Waakye, a traditional Ghanaian dish of rice and beans, and I was eager to try it. Aque Allah Special Waakye is known not only for its delicious food but also as a cultural hub. The Waakye was served with fried plantains, boiled eggs, and a spicy stew – a true explosion of flavors. Nilton was a bit hesitant at first, but Francisca encouraged him to try it, and soon he was enjoying it as much as we were. I must admit, it was a delightful start to the day, setting the tone for the adventures that lay ahead. I was so glad to see Nilton enjoying the local delicacies, as I believe food is such an important gateway to understanding a culture. It reminded me of the cachupa we enjoy back in Cabo Verde, a dish that always brings a sense of home, no matter where we are.

After breakfast, we set out to visit the East Kings Garden. Located in Zuarungu, a short drive from Bolgatanga, the garden promised a tranquil escape from the bustling city. The drive itself was interesting, giving us glimpses of local life – people going about their daily routines, colorful markets, and children playing by the roadside. When we arrived at East Kings Garden, we were immediately struck by the lush greenery and vibrant flowers. It was a true oasis of calm. We strolled through the well-maintained pathways, enjoying the serene atmosphere and the sounds of nature. Nilton was particularly fascinated by the different bird species we spotted, and I tried my best to identify them, drawing on my interest in birdwatching. Francisca, ever the observant one, pointed out various plants and flowers, sharing her knowledge of local flora. It was a perfect family moment, far removed from the hustle and bustle of Lisbon.

Traveling isn't just about seeing new places; it's about experiencing new perspectives and connecting with different cultures.

Our next stop was the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park & Mausoleum. Although I knew Kwame Nkrumah was a pivotal figure in Ghana's history, I realized I didn't know much about him. The park, located a few kilometers from Bolgatanga, is a tribute to Ghana's first President and a key figure in the country's independence movement. As we entered the park, we were greeted by beautiful gardens and monuments that told the story of Ghana's struggle for independence. The mausoleum itself was an impressive structure, housing Nkrumah's remains and serving as a reminder of his contributions to the nation. I found myself reflecting on the parallels between Nkrumah's fight for independence and the struggles for liberation in Cabo Verde. It was a sobering yet inspiring experience, reminding me of the importance of remembering our history and honoring those who fought for our freedom.

We explored the exhibits, learning about Nkrumah's life, his vision for Ghana, and his role in the Pan-African movement. Nilton, surprisingly engaged, asked questions about colonialism and independence, prompting thoughtful discussions between Francisca and me. It was a valuable opportunity to teach him about our shared history and the importance of standing up for what is right.

For lunch, we decided to try McClean View Restaurant, known for its authentic Ghanaian cuisine. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We ordered a variety of local dishes, including hearty stews and grilled options, all made with fresh ingredients from local markets. The flavors were rich and complex, showcasing the diverse culinary traditions of the region. Nilton particularly enjoyed the grilled fish, while Francisca raved about the stews. I appreciated the opportunity to try new dishes and learn about the local ingredients. It was a truly immersive culinary experience.

As the afternoon wore on, we took some time to relax and reflect on our experiences. We found a quiet spot in a local park and simply sat, observing the world around us. Children played, vendors hawked their wares, and families gathered for picnics. It was a scene of everyday life, yet it felt special because we were experiencing it together, in a new and unfamiliar place. I thought about my own childhood in Tarrafal, Cabo Verde, and the simple joys of growing up in a close-knit community. It made me appreciate the importance of family and the value of shared experiences.

For dinner, we opted for Reg Health Restaurant, which I had read offered a mix of local and continental dishes. It seemed like a good way to end a day of cultural immersion with a meal that offered something for everyone. The reviews I read mentioned that Reg Health Restaurant had a nice atmosphere and tasty food, though some found it a bit pricey. We decided to give it a try anyway, as we were in the mood for something a bit different. The restaurant was indeed cozy, and the menu had a wide variety of options. I decided to stick with a local dish, while Francisca tried a continental option. Nilton, as always, went for something familiar – fried chicken and chips. The food was good, although I must admit, Aque Allah Special Waakye and McClean View Restaurant were still the culinary highlights of the day. Nonetheless, it was a pleasant dining experience, and we enjoyed the opportunity to relax and unwind after a busy day.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Twist Chill Out, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere and extensive drink selection. Francisca and Nilton were tired and decided to head back to our guesthouse, but I was curious to experience Bolgatanga's nightlife. Twist Chill Out was indeed vibrant, with music, laughter, and a mix of locals and tourists. I ordered a local beer and struck up a conversation with a few Ghanaians, learning about their lives, their culture, and their perspectives on the world. It was a great way to connect with the local community and gain a deeper understanding of Bolgatanga. I even tried my hand at a few local dance moves, much to the amusement of my new friends. It was a fun and memorable end to a day filled with reflection, relaxation, and cultural immersion.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I feel grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with my family. Bolgatanga has proven to be a place of surprises, offering a blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and vibrant culture. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Bolga market and Zuui, which I'm sure will bring new adventures. I am particularly excited about visiting the Bolga market, as I have heard it is a bustling hub of local crafts and commerce. I am hoping to find some unique souvenirs to take back home to Lisbon, perhaps some traditional fabrics or handcrafted items. I am also looking forward to exploring Zuui, as I am interested in learning more about the local traditions and customs. I'm sure Nilton will enjoy the experience too; he's always eager to discover new things.

Before heading to sleep, I took some time to write in my journal, reflecting on the day's events and jotting down my thoughts and observations. It's a practice I find helpful, as it allows me to process my experiences and gain a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me. As I closed my journal, I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude. Bolgatanga, with its unique blend of culture, history, and natural beauty, has already left an indelible mark on my heart. I look forward to continuing our journey tomorrow, with a sense of excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead.

I am also reminded of how fortunate I am to be able to share these experiences with Francisca and Nilton. Traveling as a family has its challenges, but it also brings us closer together and creates memories that will last a lifetime. I cherish these moments, as I know they are fleeting and precious. As Nilton grows older, I want him to remember these trips and the lessons he learned along the way. I hope that he will develop a love for travel and a curiosity about the world, just as I have. And I hope that these experiences will shape him into a compassionate, open-minded, and responsible global citizen.
