A Fond Farewell to the Blue Pearl

As my Moroccan adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the past two weeks, filled with vibrant colors, captivating history, and the warmth of new friendships. Today, my final day in Chefchaouen, was a bittersweet symphony of exploration and farewells. I knew I wanted to soak in every last bit of this enchanting blue city before heading back to Leipzig.

The day began with a delightful breakfast at Toda Creperie & Ice Cream. Hans-Peter, ever the early riser, insisted we get there right when they opened. I indulged in a Nutella crepe, a simple pleasure made extraordinary by the charming atmosphere and the kindness of the women running the place. Sophia opted for strawberry ice cream, her face lit up with every lick. It’s these small, joyful moments that I’ll carry back with me, little pieces of Chefchaouen woven into the fabric of my memories. The service was delightful and the atmosphere was quiet, which was a perfect way to start the day.

After breakfast, we ventured towards the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen, housed within the historic Kasbah. As a librarian specializing in ancient Greek history, I always find myself drawn to museums, eager to connect with the past through tangible artifacts. The Kasbah itself is a monument, dating back to the 15th century, built to protect the city from Portuguese invasions. Its walls have witnessed centuries of history, serving as a residence for governors, a military arsenal, and even a prison.

Inside the Ethnographic Museum, I was immediately captivated by the exhibits showcasing Moroccan culture, traditions, and heritage. The museum beautifully illustrates the evolution of art, craft, and trade in the region, from prehistoric tools to modern-day weapons. I was particularly fascinated by the displays of traditional costumes, jewelry, and musical instruments, each telling a story of Berber, Arab, and Andalusian influences. It was easy to see how the city became a haven for Muslims and Jews expelled from Andalusia, each group leaving its mark on the city.
Travel is more than seeing sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.

Walking through the Kasbah's gardens, I imagined what life must have been like within these walls centuries ago. The architecture, a blend of Moroccan and Andalusian styles, was beautiful. The panoramic view of Chefchaouen from the top of the Kasbah was spectacular, a sea of blue stretching out before me, framed by the Rif Mountains. I thought of my daughter, Sophia, and how she would have enjoyed running around the courtyard.

For lunch, we decided on Restaurant Hamsa, known for its modern take on Moroccan cuisine and stunning views of the blue city. The rooftop terrace provided the perfect setting to reflect on our journey. I opted for the tagine, a flavorful and aromatic dish that has become a staple of my Moroccan culinary experiences. Hans-Peter, ever adventurous, tried the vegan falafel, while Sophia enjoyed a simple pastry. The avocado orange juice was surprisingly refreshing, a unique blend of flavors that I will try to recreate back in Leipzig.

In the afternoon, while Hans-Peter and Sophia explored the local shops for last-minute souvenirs, I decided to indulge in a different kind of cultural experience. Remembering a recommendation I’d seen online, I ventured to The Blue Pearl Gym. Now, I know what you're thinking: Eleni, a librarian, at a gym? But after weeks of indulging in delicious Moroccan cuisine, I felt the need to stretch my muscles. Plus, the gym seemed like a unique way to connect with the local community.

The Blue Pearl Gym was a surprisingly modern and well-equipped facility. I spent an hour on the treadmill, enjoying the view of the blue-washed buildings through the window. It was a fun change of pace, and I even struck up a conversation with a local who shared some tips on hidden gems in the city. It’s these unexpected encounters that often make travel so rewarding.

As evening approached, we gathered for our final dinner at Chez Hicham. The restaurant offered a beautiful view and a relaxed atmosphere. I chose a Moroccan chicken salad, while Hans-Peter enjoyed grilled meat, and Sophia opted for pasta. We shared stories and laughter, savoring our last moments together in this magical city.

Chefchaouen, with its blue-washed buildings and serene atmosphere, has captured a piece of my heart. It’s a place where history and culture intertwine, where the warmth of the people shines through every interaction. As I prepare to leave, I know that the memories I’ve made here will stay with me forever. I’ll miss the vibrant colors, the aromatic spices, and the gentle rhythm of life in this enchanting blue pearl. But I am also excited to return home, to share my stories and experiences with my friends and family, and to continue exploring the world, one adventure at a time.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back to Leipzig, our hearts full of cherished memories and a longing to return to this magical place. Until next time, Chefchaouen, goodbye, and thank you for the memories.
