A Daydream in Blue

Today, Chefchaouen completely captivated me. From the moment I stepped out of Hotel Casa Miguel, I was enveloped in a world where every building, every alleyway, and every doorway seemed to be painted in a different shade of blue. It felt like wandering through a dream, a serene and otherworldly experience that I'll cherish forever. The air was warm, typical for August, but the blue hues created a sense of coolness and calm that was incredibly soothing.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Casa Arina. The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of freshly baked bread and Moroccan coffee were the perfect start to our exploration. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with msemen (pancakes), honey, and a pot of mint tea. It was simple, yet incredibly satisfying, and gave me the energy I needed for the day ahead. Fouad, one of my travel partners, enjoyed the location, but felt the food needed some improvement.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its color, but in the stories whispered through its winding streets and the warmth of its people.

With our stomachs full, we ventured into the heart of Chefchaouen. Our first stop was Bab el Mahrouk, a historic gate that once served as the main western entrance to the city. Dating back to 1204, this gate is a testament to the city's rich history and architectural heritage. Originally known as Bab ash-Shari'a, meaning 'Gate of Justice', it later became known as Bab Mahrouk, or 'Gate of the Burnt,' after a rebel was burned there in the 13th century. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as I imagined the countless people who had passed through this gate over the centuries.

As we wandered through the medina, I couldn't resist snapping photos of every nook and cranny. The blue hues, ranging from deep cobalt to pale sky blue, created a mesmerizing effect. I learned that there are several theories about why Chefchaouen is blue. Some say it was introduced by Jewish refugees in the 15th century, who painted their homes blue to reflect the sky and heaven. Others believe it was done to ward off mosquitoes or simply to symbolize the ocean. Whatever the reason, the effect is simply magical.

We paused for lunch at Le Coin, a charming restaurant known for its diverse menu and cozy atmosphere. After days of mostly eating Tajine, it was nice to see some variety. I opted for a fresh salad, while Hans-Peter enjoyed a pizza. The food was delicious, and the prices were reasonable. Stefanos, a fellow traveller, mentioned that this was a great place to eat something other than the usual tajine and couscous.

In the late afternoon, we decided to treat ourselves to something sweet. We found a small pastry shop and bought a selection of Moroccan pastries. The almond-filled briouats and the honey-soaked baklava were particularly divine. We savored every bite as we sat on a bench in the square, watching the world go by.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to The Magic Lamp House of Aladin for dinner. This restaurant is known for its stunning views of the city, and it certainly didn't disappoint. We sat on the rooftop terrace, overlooking the kasbah, and watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of orange, pink, and purple. The air was a bit chilly, but the restaurant provided blankets to keep us warm. I ordered the chicken tagine with caramelized onions and raisins, which was absolutely delicious. Sophia enjoyed the food and the magical views. The service was excellent, and the staff were incredibly friendly.

After dinner, we decided to experience Chefchaouen's nightlife with a visit to The Magic Lamp House of Aladin bar. The bar had a lively atmosphere, and we enjoyed sipping on mint tea and chatting with locals. It was the perfect way to end our day in this enchanting city.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Park Sidi Abdelhamid and the Cave Acher. I'm excited to see what other hidden gems Chefchaouen has in store for us. As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. Chefchaouen is a place that will stay with me long after I leave, a blue pearl shimmering in my memories.

Reflecting on today, I realize that Chefchaouen is more than just a pretty town. It's a place with a rich history, a vibrant culture, and a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It's a place where you can lose yourself in the beauty of the blue streets and find yourself in the kindness of the people. And as I prepare for another day of exploration, I know that Chefchaouen will continue to surprise and delight me.
