A Day of Blue Wonders

The allure of Chefchaouen, the Blue Pearl of Morocco, continues to captivate me. Today, I embraced the city's charm, wandering through its labyrinthine streets and immersing myself in its vibrant culture. It was a day of simple pleasures, from savoring local pastries to soaking in the serene atmosphere of its historic landmarks. Join me as I recount the day's adventures, filled with unexpected discoveries and delightful encounters.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Cremeri Elmaataoui. The café, nestled within the blue walls of Chefchaouen, offered a charming start to the day. I savored authentic Moroccan pastries while enjoying the stunning views of the surrounding vibrant markets and artisan shops. Sophia was particularly thrilled with the 'zaazaa,' a local dessert with diced fruits and avocado smoothie. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

With our appetites satisfied, we set out to explore Bab El Ain, a captivating historical landmark and one of the main entrances to Chefchaouen’s old town. As we approached, the striking blue-washed buildings created a breathtaking backdrop. Bab El Ain, which translates to “The Gate of the Spring,” marks the dividing point between the colonial side of Chefchaouen and the old medina. As I stepped through the gate, I felt like I was entering a different world. The area was bustling with local vendors selling everything from cactus fruit to hot chickpea cake.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not only in its blue-washed walls but in the warmth and hospitality of its people.

From Bab El Ain, we strolled towards Plaza Mohammed V, a serene park built by the Spanish army during the colonization period. This circular square offered a welcome respite from the bustling streets. The plaza featured a charming fountain and a flower garden, providing a picturesque spot to relax and take in the beauty of Chefchaouen. I took a moment to appreciate the meticulously landscaped lawns and colorful flowers, a testament to the city's dedication to preserving its beauty. Hans-Peter enjoyed photographing the orange trees and the lovely frog pond in the plaza.

For lunch, we ventured to Chez Foad, a local restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The warm and inviting atmosphere made us feel right at home. I savored a flavorful tagine, while Hans-Peter opted for the Moroccan chicken. Sophia enjoyed the fries. The food was delicious, but the hospitality was even better. The owners shared laughter and joy as they served their guests.

After lunch, we took a break at COFFEE BREAK chaouen, an espresso bar located at La Grande Place. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee was irresistible, and the café provided a cozy retreat from the afternoon sun. I enjoyed an expertly crafted iced latte, while Hans-Peter chose a Turkish coffee. The friendly staff made us feel welcome, and the comfortable atmosphere was perfect for a relaxing pause. From there, we took in the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the vibrant blue walls.

As evening approached, we headed to Bar Oum Rabie for dinner. This culinary gem is known for its delicious grilled cuisine that captures the essence of Moroccan culinary traditions. The warm colors and local decor created an inviting atmosphere. I savored perfectly cooked tapas and calamari, while Hans-Peter enjoyed the sardines. We accompanied our meal with local wine, enhancing the flavors of the dishes. Bar Oum Rabie provided a delightful end to our day, leaving us with a taste of Morocco's rich culinary heritage.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the ancient Medina and the sports stadium in Tassift. I am eager to explore more of Chefchaouen's historic sites and immerse myself further in its vibrant culture. While there are no specific events scheduled, I am sure that Chefchaouen will continue to surprise and delight us with its hidden gems and unique charm. I am particularly looking forward to visiting La Vida Colorada, a shop recommended to me by a local artisan.

Reflecting on today, I am reminded of the simple joys of travel: wandering through unknown streets, savoring local flavors, and connecting with the people who call this place home. Chefchaouen has a way of slowing down time, allowing you to appreciate the beauty in the everyday. As I prepare for another day of exploration, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences and memories I am creating in this magical blue city. Perhaps I will try to find the time to purchase a travel adapter, as I forgot mine, and it would be useful for charging my devices.

Chefchaouen, with its blue-washed walls and welcoming atmosphere, continues to enchant me. Each day brings new discoveries and unforgettable moments. As I continue my journey, I am eager to share more of this Moroccan gem with you. Until tomorrow, may your travels be filled with wonder and delight.
