Adventurous Getaway to Ishigaki Island with Friends
Day 7: Chasing Light and Stars on Ishigaki: A Day of Lighthouses and Observatories
Exploring Ishigaki Island's beauty from the Oganzaki Lighthouse to the stars at the Ishigakijima Astronomical Observatory. A day of wonder.
Beacon of Light and Cosmic Wonders
Today was all about embracing the natural beauty and celestial wonders of Ishigaki Island. From standing beneath the stoic Oganzaki Lighthouse to gazing at the stars at the Ishigakijima Astronomical Observatory, it was a day filled with breathtaking views and a deeper connection to the world around us. The kind of day that makes you feel incredibly small, yet utterly connected to everything.
Iconic Ishigaki lighthouse offering panoramic ocean views, dramatic cliffs, and stunning sunsets on the island's westernmost cape.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Ohanabatake Ishigaki. It's always a joy to start the day with a delicious meal, and Ohanabatake didn't disappoint. Fuelled up and ready for adventure, our first stop was the Oganzaki Lighthouse. The drive itself was stunning, winding along the coast with glimpses of the turquoise sea. As we approached the lighthouse, the landscape transformed into rugged cliffs, a stark contrast to the white sandy beaches we've become accustomed to.
Standing at the westernmost cape of Ishigaki Island, Oganzaki has long been considered a sacred place. The lighthouse, a brilliant white structure against the deep blue sky, watches over the ocean. Although you can't enter the lighthouse itself, the panoramic views from the surrounding cliffs are simply breathtaking. The steep cliffs offer a striking contrast to the island's famous white beaches. I could see all the way to Iriomote Island in the distance! I took some time to walk around, exploring the area and taking in the stunning views. It's easy to see why this spot is so popular for watching the sunset. I made a mental note to return another evening with Maximilian and Astrid to witness that spectacle.
The universe is under no obligation to make sense to you.
After soaking in the stunning coastal views, we headed to Yu Maodeng for lunch. I was eager to try some local Okinawan cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy, local feel, and the food was delicious and comforting. It was the perfect midday refuel before our next adventure.
Our afternoon was dedicated to the cosmos at the Ishigakijima Astronomical Observatory. Perched atop Mt. Maesedake, the observatory houses the largest optical and infrared reflector telescope in the Kyushu-Okinawa area. The drive up the mountain was an adventure in itself, with narrow, winding roads leading to the summit.
Experience the wonders of the universe at Ishigakijima Astronomical Observatory, an essential destination for stargazers on Okinawa's stunning Ishigaki Island. The observatory is operated in cooperation with several organizations, including the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. It's strategically located on Ishigaki Island, allowing for unparalleled stargazing opportunities; more stars are visible here than anywhere else in Japan. How incredible is that?
We took a tour of the facility, learning about the observatory's research on solar system celestial bodies and transient astronomical events. Although the tour was in Japanese, the visuals and the sheer enthusiasm of the staff made it engaging. I was particularly fascinated by the Murikabushi telescope, used for observing the stars. I was so impressed with the views from the observatory, especially thinking about the night viewing parties where people can observe stars through telescopes.
There is something truly humbling about looking up at the night sky and contemplating the vastness of the universe. It puts everything into perspective and reminds you of the interconnectedness of all things. I was reminded of a quote I once read by Neil deGrasse Tyson.
Before heading back to our guesthouse, we stopped at Mahsuya Ishigaki for a bit of shopping. I picked up a few souvenirs for Astrid and Maximilian, little trinkets to remind them of our adventures on Ishigaki Island. I found a beautiful, hand-painted ceramic bell featuring a Shisa, which I knew Astrid would adore. For Maximilian, I chose a bottle of local Awamori, hoping we could share it one evening while reminiscing about our travels.

It was a delightful change of pace, and the food was incredibly flavorful. The owner, who is from Kerala, was so kind and welcoming, chatting with us about his time in Japan and offering tips for navigating the island. I opted for the naan dinner set, which included two vegetable curries, a side salad, naan bread, and pickles. The curries had a lovely kick, and it was a comforting meal after a day of exploration.

There are stargazing parties, observatory tours and lectures. Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park is even certified as an International Dark Sky Park because of the lack of light pollution.
As I write this, I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. We're planning to visit Ishigaki Yaima Village, a traditional village showcasing the island's cultural heritage, and the Toujin Tomb, a historical site with a fascinating story. I'm also excited to try some new restaurants; SALTIDA for breakfast, Mugonka for lunch, and Sabanisen for dinner. And perhaps a nightcap at Bar AZZURRO.
Today has been a reminder of the simple joys of travel: breathtaking views, delicious food, and a sense of wonder at the world around us. As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey and the opportunity to share it with you all. Goodnight from Ishigaki Island!
I was also reminded of the local events that occur in August such as the Yaeyama Star Festival and the Soron Festival.
