Day 14: A Day of Imperial Villas and Hidden Streets: Discovering Kyoto's Tranquil Charms
Explore Kyoto's serene side with visits to imperial villas and charming preserved streets, a perfect blend of history and tranquility.
Kyoto's Quiet Corners
Today, I ventured into the quieter realms of Kyoto, seeking out the serene beauty hidden within its imperial villas and preserved streets. It was a day of historical immersion and peaceful exploration, a welcome contrast to the bustling city center. I was eager to discover the stories these tranquil locations held, and I knew it would be an enriching experience.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi. I decided to try their Kyoto-style breakfast set, which included a variety of small dishes featuring local ingredients. The broiled Omi beef with salt, wasabi and lemon was a real treat. The restaurant was located along the Takase River and had a relaxed atmosphere that was perfect for starting the day.

With a satisfied stomach, I made my way to Saga Toriimoto Preserved Street. This historical street, lined with traditional machiya townhouses from the Meiji period, offered a glimpse into Japan's past. As I strolled along the stone-paved path, I admired the architecture and the peaceful ambiance. It felt like stepping back in time, away from the modern world. Many of the houses are still residences, while others have been converted into charming cafes and shops. I paused to peek into a few, admiring the local crafts and soaking in the atmosphere. It was easy to imagine what life must have been like here centuries ago.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest corners.
Next on my itinerary was the Katsura Imperial Villa. Securing a tour required some advance planning, but it was definitely worth the effort. The villa is renowned for its exquisite gardens and architecture, showcasing the elegance of the Japanese imperial family. The tour took us along the garden's circular walking trail around the central pond. The landscape was breathtaking, and the villa's design blended seamlessly with the natural surroundings. I was particularly impressed by the teahouses, each with its unique character and history. While we could only view the buildings from the outside, it was enough to appreciate the intricate craftsmanship and the thoughtfulness behind the garden's layout.

After Katsura, I headed to Shugakuin Imperial Villa. Like Katsura, Shugakuin is only accessible through guided tours, which I had booked in advance. This villa is set in the hills of Kyoto's eastern suburbs and consists of three separate garden areas. The tour lasted about an hour and twenty minutes, taking us through all three villas. Audio guides were available in English, which was helpful. The gardens were stunning, featuring ponds, bridges, and teahouses. The panoramic views from the upper garden were particularly memorable. It was fascinating to learn about the history and design of the villa, and I felt a sense of tranquility as I wandered through the meticulously maintained grounds.

For lunch, I chose Yasakadori Enraku, a restaurant known for its traditional Japanese hotpot dish, Oden. I enjoyed a leisurely meal in one of their private rooms, savoring the delicate flavors of the Oden and the peaceful atmosphere. It was a perfect spot to relax and reflect on the day's adventures.

In the late afternoon, I decided to explore Kyoto Sanjo Shopping Street. This long-established shopping street is a hub of local life, with a variety of stores ranging from traditional crafts to modern goods. I enjoyed browsing the shops and soaking in the lively atmosphere. It was a great place to experience the everyday life of Kyoto residents and pick up a few souvenirs.

As evening approached, I ventured to Bar Ixey for a nightcap. This bar specializes in herbal liqueurs and offers a unique cocktail experience. I asked the bartender to create a custom drink for me, and he crafted a delicious concoction using various herbal infusions. The atmosphere was cozy and intimate, and it was a perfect way to end the day. I learned that the bartender has his own non-alcoholic distillery and drinking salon just 20 minutes away, which is quite impressive!

Before heading back to the hotel, I strolled along the Kamo River, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the twinkling lights of the city. Today was a reminder that Kyoto is more than just temples and shrines; it's a city of hidden gems and quiet beauty, waiting to be discovered.
I'm looking forward to sharing more stories from my travels soon. Until then, happy travels!
