A Fond Farewell to Kyoto

Today marked the final day of my solo adventure in Kyoto, and what a journey it has been! From the tranquil gardens to the vibrant streets, this city has captured my heart in ways I never imagined. Today was a mix of reflection and exploration, soaking in the last moments of Kyoto's magic before heading back to Bamberg.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Gion Nanba. The traditional Japanese breakfast was a perfect start, fueling me for a day of temple visits and city views. The delicate flavors and artful presentation set a serene tone, a fitting prelude to the spiritual experiences that awaited. It was a small, intimate setting, run by a friendly elderly couple, which added to the charm.

First on the agenda was Eikan-dō Temple, also known as Zenrin-ji. The temple is known for its stunning autumn foliage, but even in early March, it held a unique charm. The bare branches of the maple trees hinted at the vibrant colors to come, and the serene gardens offered a peaceful escape. I wandered through the temple grounds, admiring the picturesque ponds and the striking wooden pagoda, which promised a panoramic view of the city. I found myself particularly drawn to the unique statue of Amida Buddha, its head turned to the side. Legend says the statue turned its head to talk to a priest. The covered walkways and stairs that connected the different areas of the temple were beautiful. The temple was built at the base of the mountains and the gradation among the areas of the temple made walking around the complex quite engaging.

The journey may end, but the memories last a lifetime.

Next, I headed to Sanjūsangen-dō Temple, a place I had been eagerly anticipating. The temple is renowned for its 1,001 statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. Stepping into the main hall was an awe-inspiring experience. The sheer number of golden statues, each with a unique face, was breathtaking. I learned that the temple was founded in 1164 by Taira no Kiyomori, a powerful warlord, and later rebuilt in 1266 after a fire. The main hall, measuring 120 meters, is Japan's longest wooden structure. I paused, reflecting on the history and artistry that filled the hall. It was interesting to learn that among the statues, it is said that you can find one that resembles the person you long to meet. I spent some time looking carefully at their faces, wondering if I might find a familiar visage.

For lunch, I indulged in a teppanyaki experience at Teppanyaki Minami. The chef's skillful performance and the delicious food made for a memorable meal. I watched as he prepared Miyazaki beef sirloin and tenderloin, each cooked to perfection on the hot teppan grill. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a delightful contrast to the lighter fare I had been enjoying. Minami offered multiple sauces, but the beef with salt was my favorite.

After lunch, I decided to do some shopping at Kyoto Avanti, located near Kyoto Station. The shopping center offered a wide variety of shops and restaurants. I browsed through the apparel and souvenir shops, picking up a few last-minute gifts for Maximilian and Astrid. It was a convenient place to do some quick shopping before heading to my final destination.

As evening approached, I made my way to Kyoto Tower. Standing 131 meters tall, it is the tallest structure in Kyoto, offering panoramic views of the city. I took the elevator to the observation deck, where I was treated to a 360-degree view of Kyoto. From there, I could see the mountains of Higashiyama and Arashiyama, as well as the city stretching out below. It was a perfect way to say goodbye to Kyoto, taking in the cityscape one last time. I learned that the tower was completed in 1964, the same year as the Tokyo Olympics, and that its design is meant to resemble a Japanese candle.

To cap off my final day, I ventured into Kyoto's nightlife with a visit to Rock Stock, a small, rock and roll-themed bar. The owner, Tomo, welcomed me with open arms, and I enjoyed a drink while listening to classic rock tunes. The bar was filled with records, toys, and models of Tomo's cars, creating a unique and welcoming atmosphere. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on my journey.

For my final dinner in Kyoto, I chose Kikunoi Roan, a Michelin-starred restaurant known for its exquisite kaiseki cuisine. The multi-course meal was a culinary journey, each dish a work of art. The flavors were delicate and refined, showcasing the best of Kyoto's seasonal ingredients. It was a perfect ending to my trip, a celebration of the city's culinary excellence. The staff were very attentive, and I felt nurtured by the food, hospitality and atmosphere of Kikunoi Roan.

As I prepare to leave Kyoto, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences I have had. This solo journey has been a transformative one, allowing me to connect with a new culture and discover new aspects of myself. I can't wait to return and share this magical city with Maximilian and Astrid.

Tomorrow, I will be heading back to Germany, carrying with me the memories and lessons learned on this incredible adventure. While there are no specific itinerary items for tomorrow, the journey home will be a time for reflection and planning future adventures. Until next time, Kyoto!

I am so glad I had this opportunity to explore Kyoto on my own, and I am already looking forward to sharing my experiences with my family and readers. This trip has been a wonderful reminder of the beauty and richness of Japanese culture, and I hope to inspire others to embark on their own solo adventures.

The plum blossom festival at Jonan-gu looks like a great event. I'll need to remember that for future trips.

Until next time, sayōnara from Japan!
