Solo Cultural Journey Through Kyoto
Day 5: A Day in Gion: Geishas, Shrines, and Serenity in Kyoto
Explore Kyoto's Gion district with its geishas, serene shrines, and peaceful parks. A cultural journey through the heart of Japan.
Gion's Timeless Charm
Today was a day of wandering through Kyoto's famed Gion district, a place where ancient traditions and modern life intertwine in the most enchanting ways. I set out to explore its hidden corners, shrines, and parks, eager to soak in the atmosphere that has captivated visitors for centuries. It was a day filled with unexpected discoveries and a deeper appreciation for Kyoto's cultural heart.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Chihana. I must say, as someone who appreciates a good, solid breakfast to fuel a day of exploration, Chihana was a delightful start. The Japanese cuisine was just what I needed to energize myself for the day ahead. It was a great way to immerse myself in the local culinary scene right from the beginning. The service was exceptional, and the chefs were genuinely enthusiastic about the food. It was an excellent introduction to the day. I remember Maximilian once said that a good meal is the foundation of any great adventure, and he couldn't have been more right.

With a full stomach and a spring in my step, I made my way into the heart of Gion. The district's history dates back to the Middle Ages, serving travelers and pilgrims who visited the Yasaka Shrine. As I walked along the narrow streets, I could almost feel the echoes of the past. The preserved wooden machiya townhouses exuded a timeless charm, and the occasional glimpse of a geiko or maiko hurrying to an appointment added an air of mystique. Gion is known as Kyoto's most famous geisha district. The atmosphere is captivating. It is a blend of traditional culture and modern charm. The iconic wooden machiya merchant houses are amazing. They have narrow facades. I learned that property taxes were formerly based upon street frontage, so the houses were built with narrow facades only five to six meters wide, but extend up to twenty meters in from the street.
Gion is more than just a place; it's a living, breathing tapestry of Japanese history and culture.
My next stop was Yasaka Shrine, a vibrant Shinto shrine at the eastern end of Shijo Street. Founded in the 7th century, it's one of Kyoto's oldest and most important shrines. As I approached the street-facing two-storied vermilion gate, I was struck by its beauty and character. The shrine is dedicated to Susano-o no Mikoto, the god of storms and sea, and his wife, Inada-hime. I took a moment to appreciate the intricate details of the architecture and the peaceful ambiance of the grounds. The main sanctuary is where worshippers notify the gods of their presence by ringing the large bells above before praying at the altar. I made an offering and prayed for continued good health and safe travels.

From Yasaka Shrine, I strolled through Maruyama Park, a public park adjacent to the shrine. Even in late February, the park had a serene beauty. While the cherry blossoms were still weeks away from blooming, the bare branches of the trees created a striking silhouette against the sky. I took a leisurely walk along the winding paths, enjoying the tranquility and the crisp winter air. I imagined how beautiful this park must be in spring, with its cherry trees in full bloom. It's definitely a place I'd love to revisit during cherry blossom season. I have visited Maruyama Park in Sapporo, but it is wonderful to see another park with the same name. I remember visiting Maruyama Park (Sapporo) in February of last year. The park was filled with snow. It was magical with the streetlights lighting up the walkway and revealing the bare tree branches hanging over the path.

Lunch was at Kakyo, a restaurant recommended for its modern take on Japanese cuisine with French influences. The meal was a culinary delight, with each dish beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. It was a perfect blend of traditional Japanese ingredients and French techniques, creating a unique and memorable dining experience. I particularly enjoyed the chef's creative use of seasonal ingredients, showcasing the best of what Kyoto has to offer. I made sure to try the Omakase course. It was a seasonal cuisine that incorporates Japanese cuisine with a French touch. The chef values the changing seasons of Kyoto and offers Omakase courses using seasonal ingredients for both lunch and dinner. Perfume is not allowed in the restaurant and smoking is not allowed. Also, you have to keep your voice down.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in some shopping at Kyoto LOFT. This multi-floor emporium is a treasure trove of contemporary Japanese lifestyle products, from innovative home goods to trendy stationery and fashionable accessories. I spent hours browsing the aisles, admiring the attention to detail and functionality of the items on display. I ended up buying a few souvenirs for Astrid and Maximilian, as well as some unique stationery for myself. It's a great place to find gifts that are both practical and stylish. Loft is quintessentially Japan in every way possible. It is functional, aesthetic, organised, and cute. I love Loft with all my heart and every time I go to a store my financial will is tested beyond belief. There are Japanese Lifestyle Products, Contemporary Home Goods, and Unique Gifts. It is best for Shopaholics, Design Enthusiasts, and Tourists.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Concrete Bar, a hidden gem known for its great atmosphere and friendly staff. I enjoyed a refreshing cocktail while chatting with the bartender, Kiyoshi, who shared some interesting stories about Kyoto's nightlife. The bar had a cool interior and a relaxed vibe, making it the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring. It was a great way to experience a different side of Kyoto and connect with the local community. My favorite bar!! I went there drunk, but it made me even more drunk than I was. I became friends with A-kun, a college student who works part-time at a Korean Cuisine restaurant.

For dinner, I treated myself to a meal at French Dining Top of Kyoto, a revolving restaurant on the 14th floor of the Rihga Royal Hotel Kyoto. The restaurant offered stunning 360-degree views of the city, which were especially beautiful at night. The French cuisine was excellent, and the service was impeccable. It was a truly special dining experience, and a perfect way to end my day in Gion. The interior is adorned with hand-printed traditional Japanese paper from Kira Takanaga, a historic paper shop founded in 1624, creating a unique and elegant atmosphere. It is the city's only revolving restaurant and unique among French restaurants in Kyoto. Maps of famous landmarks are thoughtfully provided. It is Japan's only revolving Restaurants. Apparently the revolving Restaurants in Sapporo has closed, so this is the only revolving restaurant. I made sure to try the Wagyu Steak and finish it off with a glass of free champagne.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Gion had to offer. From its historic streets and serene shrines to its vibrant culinary scene and unique shopping experiences, it was a place that truly captured the essence of Kyoto. As I headed back to my hotel, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this magical district and immerse myself in its rich cultural heritage.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Heian Shrine, Kyoto Imperial Palace, and Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. I'm excited to see more of Kyoto's historical and cultural landmarks. I also plan to do some shopping at Noren by Corazon and visit The Roots of all evil. for a drink.
The Gion district is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Kyoto. Its blend of traditional and modern elements, its rich history and culture, and its vibrant atmosphere make it a truly unforgettable place. I highly recommend setting aside at least a day to explore this enchanting district and discover its many hidden treasures. It's an experience you won't soon forget.
