Kyoto's Quiet Charms

Today was a day of exploring Kyoto's serene side, a welcome contrast to the bustling markets and famous temples I’ve visited so far. It’s easy to get caught up in ticking off the major sights, but sometimes the real magic lies in discovering the quieter corners of a city. I was particularly excited to see the botanical gardens, and experience some of the local cuisine.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at MUGHAL Indian Restaurant & Bar. It might seem odd to start a day in Kyoto with Indian food, but I was curious. I remember Maximilian once saying, before Astrid was born, that the best meals are those you least expect. The Mughal restaurant was indeed a culinary surprise near the Kamo River. I opted for a flavorful curry, a delightful change from the usual Japanese breakfast fare. It was a packed house, a testament to its popularity among locals seeking something different from the traditional cuisine. After breakfast, I made my way to the Kyoto Botanical Gardens.

The Kyoto Botanical Gardens in February are a tranquil escape. Despite the winter chill, the gardens were alive with pockets of color and the promise of spring. I wandered through the conservatory, marveling at the diverse plant life from around the world. It was fascinating to see tropical flowers blooming alongside Japanese flora, a true testament to the garden's dedication to botanical diversity. Although the cherry blossoms hadn't yet made their grand entrance, there were subtle signs of their impending arrival, tiny buds hinting at the spectacle to come. I was particularly drawn to the camellias, their vibrant blooms adding a splash of color to the landscape. The gardens offered a peaceful respite, a chance to reconnect with nature and appreciate the quiet beauty of the season.

From the gardens, I headed north to explore the sacred grounds of Shimogamo Shrine and Kamigamo Shrine.

These ancient shrines, nestled in serene forests, offered a glimpse into Kyoto's spiritual heart. The approach to Shimogamo Shrine was particularly enchanting, a path winding through the Tadasu-no-Mori forest, a primeval woodland that feels worlds away from the city. The crisp air, the rustling leaves, and the soft light filtering through the trees created a sense of reverence and tranquility.

At Shimogamo Shrine, I paused to admire the traditional architecture and the vibrant red torii gates. The shrine is dedicated to the gods Kamotaketsunomi and Tamayorihime, believed to protect Kyoto, and I could feel a palpable sense of history and spirituality in the air. I also observed the Hinamatsuri Festival celebrations taking place. It was fascinating to learn about this tradition, where dolls are floated down the river to pray for the health of children. The shrine was a peaceful haven, offering a moment of reflection amidst the hustle and bustle of travel.

“The quieter you become, the more you can hear.”

Afterward, I ventured to Kamigamo Shrine, a short distance away.

This shrine, like Shimogamo, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan. The atmosphere here was equally serene, with beautifully maintained grounds and stunning architectural details. I was fortunate enough to witness a traditional ceremony taking place, the solemn rituals and ancient traditions offering a profound insight into Japanese culture. I learned that February 11th is Kigen-sai, which celebrates the foundation of Japan, adding another layer of historical significance to my visit. It felt like a privilege to witness these traditions firsthand, a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that Kyoto holds.

For lunch, I chose Komefuku, a restaurant specializing in tempura and seafood.

It was a delightful experience, savoring the delicate flavors of freshly prepared dishes. The restaurant had a cozy, local vibe, with many Japanese patrons enjoying their midday meals. I opted for a tempura set, the light, crispy batter perfectly complementing the fresh seafood and vegetables. It was a satisfying and authentic culinary experience, a taste of Kyoto's dedication to fresh, local ingredients. Komefuku was definitely a great place to experience authentic Japanese cuisine.

In the late afternoon, I decided to explore Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street, a bustling covered arcade filled with shops and restaurants.

I enjoyed wandering through the arcade, soaking up the lively atmosphere and people-watching. It was a great place to find unique gifts and experience the energy of modern Kyoto.

As evening approached, I sought out Nishikawa for dinner, a Michelin-starred restaurant known for its exquisite Kaiseki cuisine.

Tucked away in a quiet alley, the bar had a cozy and intimate atmosphere, perfect for a nightcap. The bartender was a true mixologist, creating innovative and delicious drinks with a focus on local ingredients. I opted for a gin-based cocktail, a refreshing and flavorful concoction that perfectly capped off my day of exploration. It was a delightful experience, savoring the expertly crafted drink in the intimate setting of this hidden gem.

As I walked back to Gion Misen Furumonzen, I reflected on the day's adventures.

From the tranquil gardens and sacred shrines to the bustling shopping street and exquisite cuisine, Kyoto had once again captivated me with its unique blend of tradition and modernity. It was a day of contrasts, a reminder of the diverse experiences that this enchanting city has to offer. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit Higashiyama Jisho-ji (Ginkaku-ji), the Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design, and Murinan Garden. I also plan to explore Kyoto Porta for some shopping and relax at Bar Cordon Noir in the evening. I am sure tomorrow will be just as exciting and enriching as today.

I’m also reminded that I need to replace the raincoat I forgot to pack. I’ll add that to my shopping list for tomorrow!
