Discover Kyoto's hidden gems: from serene gardens to exquisite crafts, a solo journey of cultural immersion and delightful culinary experiences.
Finding Peace and Art in Kyoto's Embrace
Today was a day of simple pleasures and artistic exploration here in Kyoto. It’s amazing how much you can discover when you allow yourself to wander without a strict agenda, soaking in the atmosphere and letting the city guide you. I started my day with a delightful breakfast and ended it with a nightcap at a cozy bar, with plenty of cultural enrichment in between. I'm finding that each day reveals a new layer of Kyoto's charm.
My day started with a hearty breakfast at Hyoto Shijo Karasuma. The hotel was conveniently located and offered a delightful mix of Japanese and Western options. I enjoyed a selection of Obanzai, those lovely Kyoto-style side dishes, alongside a fluffy omelette cooked to perfection. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring. Maximilian would have loved the variety; he always appreciates a good breakfast buffet.

First on my itinerary was Higashiyama Jisho-ji, also known as Ginkaku-ji or the Silver Pavilion. Nestled in the eastern mountains of Kyoto, the temple offered a tranquil escape from the city's bustle. The manicured moss gardens and the meticulously raked dry sand garden were truly mesmerizing. I took my time wandering through the grounds, enjoying the serene atmosphere and the stunning views of the surrounding landscape. It's funny, I had packed my raincoat, remembering how often it rains here, but completely forgot an extra memory card for my camera. I was kicking myself as I snapped photo after photo, trying to capture the essence of this beautiful place.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its grand temples and famous gardens, but in the quiet moments of reflection found in its hidden corners.
From Ginkaku-ji, I made my way to the Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design. As someone who appreciates the artistry and skill of handmade crafts, I was eager to see what the museum had to offer. The museum is located in the Okazaki Park area, and is surrounded by many significant temples and shrines. I wasn't disappointed. The permanent exhibition showcased a vast array of Kyoto's traditional crafts, from delicate pottery to intricate textiles. I was particularly fascinated by the 74 Crafts Wall, the largest display wall in Japan, exhibiting all 74 categories of Kyoto traditional crafts. The touch panel displays provided detailed descriptions of each craft, as well as videos demonstrating the manufacturing process. It was a wonderful way to learn about the rich history and cultural significance of these art forms. I even saw a demonstration of sanada-himo, learning about the different schools of tea ceremony and their unique cords and knot-tying styles. I was so impressed by the dedication and passion of the artisans, it reminded me a bit of my own dedication to translation work.

After immersing myself in the world of crafts, I decided to take a stroll through Murinan Garden. This modern Japanese garden, created in the Meiji period, is a hidden gem tucked away in the Okazaki area of Kyoto. It was built by Yamagata Aritomo, and designed by Ogawa Jihei. The garden is designed to give you a different view at every turn. The garden's design incorporates the Higashiyama Mountains, making it appear as an extension of the mountain scenery. The streams, ponds, and waterfalls created by taking advantage of the Lake Biwa Canal were stunning. It was a perfect spot for contemplation and relaxation. I spent a good hour wandering through the garden, admiring the meticulously manicured moss and trees, and listening to the gentle sound of the water.

For lunch, I ventured to Hanasaki, a restaurant that focuses on Kyoto cuisine. I opted for a mini-kaiseki set, which included a variety of seasonal dishes served on an individual tray. The yuba and namafu, both Kyoto specialties, were particularly delicious. The meal was a delightful culinary experience, showcasing the fresh, local ingredients and the delicate flavors of Kyoto cuisine. I thought of Astrid, who would have loved the colorful presentation of the dishes.

In the late afternoon, I did some shopping at Kyoto Porta, the underground shopping mall connected to Kyoto Station. I wasn't necessarily looking for anything in particular, but I wanted to explore the local shops and see what they had to offer. I found a variety of souvenirs, confectionery, and handicrafts. I ended up buying a few small gifts for Maximilian and Astrid, as well as a couple of Nishiri pickles for myself. I find it fascinating how pickles are a fundamental part of the typical Japanese meal.

As evening approached, I decided to treat myself to a nice dinner at Teppan Tavern Tenamonya. This restaurant came highly recommended for its teppanyaki cuisine and lively atmosphere. I wasn't disappointed. The food was delicious, authentic, and expertly prepared. I enjoyed watching the chefs cook the food right in front of me on the teppan grill. The wagyu steak was cooked to perfection, and the gyoza were some of the best I've ever had. The owners were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making me feel right at home. It's always wonderful to find a place where the food is excellent and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. I was impressed that they offered vegetarian and vegan options. It reminded me of how Maximilian and I always try to find restaurants that cater to everyone's dietary needs when we travel with friends.

To cap off the day, I decided to visit Bar Cordon Noir for a nightcap. This small bar, located on the third floor of an office building, is a hidden gem known for its extensive selection of whiskies. The bartender was friendly and accommodating, and the prices were very reasonable. I quickly felt at home here. The menu was so extensive that it took me a few minutes to narrow down my choices. Although they had an impressive scotch list, I decided to stick with the Japanese distilleries and ordered a Japanese old fashioned cocktail. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring and immersing myself in the culture of Kyoto.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Tō-ji Temple, Fushimi Inari Taisha, and the Kyoto Railway Museum. I'm particularly excited about visiting Fushimi Inari Taisha with its thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding up the mountain. It sounds like the perfect place to take some stunning photographs.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm reminded of why I love traveling solo. It allows me to be spontaneous, to explore at my own pace, and to fully immerse myself in the local culture. I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and serenity of Kyoto, and I'm looking forward to more adventures in the days to come.
