Day 9: A Day of Discovery: Unveiling Chefchaouen's Hidden Gems
Immerse yourself in Chefchaouen's charm with visits to the Grand Mosque, local shops, and delightful Andalusian cuisine. A day of pure bliss!
Saturday in the Blue Pearl
Today was a day of exploration and cultural immersion in Chefchaouen. I set out to discover some of the city's hidden gems, and I wasn't disappointed. From the spiritual Grand Mosque to the intricate craftsmanship in the local shops, every moment was filled with wonder. The flavors of Moroccan cuisine danced on my palate, making it a truly unforgettable experience.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Assaada. I savored a traditional Moroccan breakfast of delicious crêpes and mint tea, which gave me the perfect start to the day. The restaurant had a lovely view, and the service was very welcoming. It was the ideal spot to fuel up before a day of exploring. I made a mental note to perhaps try making crêpes myself when I got back home to Bamberg for Astrid. She would love them! After breakfast, I made my way to the Grand Mosque of Chefchaouen.

The Grand Mosque, an emblem of Morocco's rich heritage, stands proudly near the historic kasbah in Place Outa el Hammam. Its origins date back to the earliest period of the city, with the minaret believed to originate from the late 17th century. Although non-Muslims can't enter, I admired the striking minaret and the serene atmosphere. The architecture was stunning, and I took some time to sit in the plaza and soak in the spirituality of the place. The Grand Mosque isn't just a place of worship; it's an icon that embodies the charm of Chefchaouen. It was fascinating to learn that the mosque played a pivotal role in hosting allegiance pledges from local rulers to the Sultan of Morocco and that it has a historical madrasa offering lessons in religious sciences. The building has been restored several times, most recently in 2006.
Traveling allows you to discover not only new places but also new aspects of yourself.
Next on my list was Dar Antonio Chefchaouen. This traditional Moroccan accommodation is known for its warm hospitality and beautiful setting. Although I wasn't staying there, I wanted to see what made it so special. I was greeted by Antonio himself, who was incredibly welcoming and shared stories about the guesthouse and the city. He made me feel right at home, offering tips and insights that only a local would know. The riad featured a terrace with a seating area and free Wi-Fi, blending traditional charm with modern comforts. Dar Antonio is celebrated for its cleanliness, value for money, and friendly staff. It’s conveniently located near Ras el Ma Waterfall and the Medina, making it an ideal base for exploring Chefchaouen. I could see why guests rave about Antonio's hospitality and the peaceful atmosphere.

After my visit, I decided to explore the Chefchaouen copper and lamps shop. The shop was a treasure trove of handcrafted copper items, from intricately designed lamps to exquisite decorative pieces. The craftsmanship was remarkable, and I spent ages admiring the artistry. The shopkeepers were eager to share stories about the history and techniques behind their crafts, making it an immersive cultural experience. I purchased a beautiful lamp as a souvenir, a piece of Chefchaouen to bring back home.

For lunch, I chose Restaurant Chourafa. This restaurant is known for its Mediterranean and Moroccan cuisine, with a focus on seafood. I decided to try the traditional Moroccan shrimp tagine, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were rich and authentic, and the seafood was incredibly fresh. The service was attentive, and the atmosphere was calm and inviting. Many visitors praise the restaurant for its affordable prices and the variety of seafood dishes. The restaurant also has a wonderful view, adding to the overall dining experience. I was happy to see that the restaurant also offered a Special Anchovy Tajin, Grilled Squid, and Mixed Fish Tagine.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to RESTAURANT CASA ANDALUZ for dinner. This restaurant offers Mediterranean and Moroccan dishes in a cozy setting. I opted for the chicken, which was cooked to perfection. The fruit salad was also a refreshing end to the meal. The service was friendly, and the prices were reasonable. Although the restaurant has mixed reviews on Google, I found it to be a pleasant experience.
