Finding Peace and Treasures in the Blue Pearl

Today was a day of gentle exploration and quiet contemplation in Chefchaouen. I traded the bustling medina for the serene atmosphere of Feddan Park and the charming shops of Rue Ibn Asskar, seeking a different rhythm in this blue city. It was a day to breathe, to wander without a strict agenda, and to simply soak in the beauty around me.

My day began with a leisurely breakfast at Restaurant Lalla Messaouda. The morning air was crisp, a delightful contrast to the warm, freshly baked bread and mint tea. I sat on the terrace, watching the town slowly wake up, the blue hues softening in the morning light. It was a perfect way to start a day dedicated to unhurried exploration. I had a tasty Moroccan lamb.

After breakfast, I made my way to Feddan Park. It’s a lovely green space, a welcome respite from the winding alleyways of the medina. Apparently, the park was rebuilt by King Mohammed VI in its current location because locals missed the original park, which was destroyed to make room for the Royal Palace. I could understand why; it's a place for the community to gather, relax, and enjoy a bit of nature. I found a quiet bench beneath a shady tree and spent some time simply observing. Families were playing, friends were chatting, and the overall atmosphere was one of peaceful contentment. It reminded me of the parks back in Eksjö, where I spent countless afternoons as a child, dreaming of adventures far beyond our small town.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not only in its striking blue architecture but also in the quiet moments of connection and reflection found in its parks and streets.

From the park, I strolled towards Rue Ibn Asskar, a street known for its shops and local crafts. The street itself is a narrow back street in the medina. Unlike the main thoroughfares, this street had a more relaxed vibe, allowing me to browse at my own pace. I was on the hunt for some unique souvenirs, something that would remind me of Chefchaouen long after I’ve returned to Bamberg. I wasn’t disappointed. The shops were filled with colorful textiles, intricate ceramics, and all sorts of handcrafted treasures. I took my time, admiring the artistry and chatting with the shopkeepers, each conversation offering a small glimpse into their lives and the traditions of the region.

One shop, in particular, caught my eye: Jabir Shop. It was a small, unassuming place, but the moment I stepped inside, I was captivated. The shop was filled with locally crafted souvenirs, from woven textiles to handmade jewelry. The owner was incredibly welcoming, sharing stories about the artisans and the techniques they used. I ended up buying a beautiful handwoven scarf, the deep blue hues mirroring the colors of the city itself. It felt like more than just a purchase; it was a connection to the heart and soul of Chefchaouen. I also picked up some spices to try some new German recipes when I get back home.

For lunch, I decided to try Restaurant Ali Baba. It was conveniently located and had a charming ambiance. I opted for a traditional Moroccan soup and a tagine. The soup was flavorful and comforting, and the tagine was rich with spices and tender meat. While the reviews online are mixed, I found the food to be quite enjoyable, and the service was friendly. It was a satisfying meal that fueled me for the rest of my afternoon.

After lunch, I continued my exploration of Rue Ibn Asskar, discovering more hidden gems and unique finds. I purchased a few more souvenirs, including some intricate ceramics and a small leather pouch, each item carefully chosen to evoke the spirit of Chefchaouen. As the afternoon wore on, the street became more lively, filled with locals and tourists alike, all drawn to the vibrant atmosphere and the promise of discovering something special. It was a sensory feast, a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and scents that perfectly captured the essence of this enchanting city.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back to Hotel Barcelona, my arms laden with treasures and my heart full of memories. I spent some time on the hotel terrace, watching the sky transform into a canvas of fiery hues, the blue buildings of Chefchaouen silhouetted against the horizon. It was a magical moment, a perfect ending to a day of quiet exploration and simple pleasures. I thought of Max and Astrid back in Bamberg, wondering what they were doing and wishing they could share this moment with me. I know Astrid would love running around in Feddan Park.

Dinner tonight was at Restaurant Parador, which is conveniently located within the Parador Hotel. The reviews mentioned stunning views of the city and surrounding mountains, and they were not wrong. I ordered a chicken tajine, which was exceptional. The service was attentive, and the atmosphere was serene. It was a delightful way to end the day, savoring delicious food while soaking in the beauty of Chefchaouen from above. I even enjoyed a Moroccan beer.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I’m planning to visit Park Sidi Abdelhamid and the View point, seeking out more panoramic vistas of this stunning landscape. I’m also looking forward to experiencing the sunset at a local bar called Sunset at sunset. It sounds like the perfect way to cap off another day of exploration and discovery.

As I settle into bed tonight, I’m filled with a sense of gratitude for the simple joys of travel: the freedom to wander, the opportunity to connect with new cultures, and the chance to discover hidden treasures in unexpected places. Chefchaouen has a way of slowing you down, of inviting you to breathe and simply be present in the moment. It’s a gift that I will carry with me long after I leave this blue pearl nestled in the Rif Mountains.
