Echoes of Emperors and Saints

Today, Hans-Peter and I embarked on a journey through time, tracing the echoes of Roman ingenuity and the quiet devotion of medieval monks. It was a day filled with architectural marvels and serene contemplation, a perfect blend of history and culture that resonated deeply with my soul.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Aldente Restaurant. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of traditional Italian fare were the perfect start to our explorations. I savored a cappuccino, its rich aroma filling the air, while Hans-Peter enjoyed a selection of local cheeses. The friendly staff, fluent in Italian, French, and English, made us feel instantly welcome.

Fueled and ready, we set off to our first destination: the Pont d'Aël. As we drove, the landscape unfolded before us, a tapestry of verdant valleys and imposing peaks. The anticipation of witnessing a structure built millennia ago was palpable. Upon arriving at Pont d'Aël, I was immediately struck by its grandeur. The aqueduct-bridge, standing 56 meters high and 50 meters long, is a testament to Roman engineering prowess. Built in 3 BC, it served to irrigate the newly founded colony of Augusta Praetoria, now Aosta. Hans-Peter, ever the pragmatist, marveled at the precision of the construction, while I was captivated by the thought of the lives it had touched and the history it had silently witnessed.

Walking along the upper conduit, I imagined the flow of water that once coursed through it, nourishing the land and sustaining the community. The lower walkway, once used by men and livestock, offered a unique perspective of the Grand Eyvia torrent below. The views were breathtaking, a panorama of mountains and valleys that stretched as far as the eye could see. It was a moment of profound connection to the past, a reminder of the enduring legacy of human innovation.

To build is to collaborate with nature, to leave a mark that speaks across the ages.

Leaving Pont d'Aël, we drove back towards Aosta, our minds still filled with images of Roman grandeur. Our next stop was the Chiostro romanico di Sant-Orso (XII s.), a Romanesque cloister that promised a different kind of historical immersion. We found the cloister adjacent to the Collegiate Church of Saint Orso. As we stepped into the cloister, a sense of tranquility washed over us. The elegant arcade columns, adorned with intricate motifs and figures, spoke of the artistic spirit of medieval artisans. Built in the 12th century, the cloister is a testament to the Romanesque style, with its simple yet elegant design.

The capitals of the columns are adorned with biblical scenes and representations of daily life, offering a glimpse into the medieval world. I was particularly drawn to the depictions of the Nativity, the Adoration of the Magi, and the Flight into Egypt. Hans-Peter, with his keen eye for detail, pointed out the subtle differences in the carving styles, suggesting the hands of multiple artisans. The cloister's history is palpable, with an inscription dating back to 1133 marking the beginning of communal life within its walls. It was here that Bishop Eriberto established a community of Augustinian canons, shaping the religious and cultural landscape of Aosta.

After immersing ourselves in the serene atmosphere of the cloister, our stomachs began to rumble. It was time for lunch, and we had chosen Ristorante Brasserie La Cave De Tillier, enticed by its promise of traditional Aosta Valley cuisine. The restaurant's rustic atmosphere, with its stone and wood décor and vaulted tavern dating back to 1765, was immediately appealing. We were greeted warmly by Cristian and Jessica, who made us feel like cherished guests. I decided on the *Tomahawk*, while Hans-Peter opted for the *Arrosticini*. Each dish was prepared with care and attention to detail, showcasing the flavors of the Aosta Valley. The restaurant also offers a selection of Mediterranean dishes and homemade desserts.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Crazy Fox, a local bar known for its unique cocktails and extensive selection of craft beers. The atmosphere was lively and inviting, a perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploration. I savored a local craft beer, its hoppy notes dancing on my palate, while Hans-Peter enjoyed a *Amaro dei Murazzi*. The friendly staff and the eclectic mix of locals and tourists created a convivial atmosphere.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Tour Neuve and Castello di Bosses, continuing our journey through the historical and cultural landscape of the Aosta Valley. Perhaps we'll find some unique souvenirs at Montura Store Aosta. But for now, I am content to reflect on the day's adventures, the echoes of emperors and saints resonating in my soul. It's events like the *La Pass Pitchü* that remind me of the strong sense of community in the valleys.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we enjoyed a delightful dinner at Ianua Ristorante. The ambiance was lovely, and the food was delicious. I particularly enjoyed the menu, which was available in multiple languages. The service was excellent, making our dining experience truly memorable.
