Echoes of the Past, Tastes of the Present

Today was a day of deep immersion into the soul of Shirakawa-go. Hans-Peter and I sought to understand the traditions that have shaped this unique corner of Japan, and to taste the flavors that define its culinary identity. From exploring ancient farmhouses to savoring local delicacies, it was a day of discovery and connection.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Shiawaseya Kichibei. While the name suggests 'a fortunate store of good luck', the true fortune was in the delightful array of local dishes that greeted us. The simple, yet flavorful breakfast was the perfect fuel for our explorations ahead. I especially enjoyed the pickled vegetables, a taste of the local harvest that reminded me of my own attempts at gardening back in Berlin, though I doubt my yields will ever match the richness of this region. Hans-Peter, ever the early bird, was already snapping photos of the morning light filtering through the traditional architecture, his enthusiasm as bright as the rising sun. He truly has a knack for capturing the essence of a place, a skill I greatly admire.

Our first destination was the Gokayama Folklore Museum. Housed in one of the oldest Gassho-zukuri houses in the area, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the lives of past generations. I was particularly intrigued by the sericulture tools on display. It's remarkable to think about the intricate process of silk production that once thrived in these mountains. Hans-Peter, with his keen eye for detail, was fascinated by the construction of the house itself, marveling at the ingenuity of the design that has withstood the test of time. The museum wasn't just a collection of artifacts; it was a portal into a way of life that was both simple and profound.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

Next, we ventured to Kanazawa Katani, eager to experience the art of gold leaf application. As someone who appreciates history and craftsmanship, I was excited to try my hand at this delicate art form. The staff were incredibly patient and helpful, guiding us through the process with gentle encouragement. It was a humbling experience to work with such a precious material, and I felt a sense of accomplishment as I carefully applied the gold leaf to my chosen object. Hans-Peter, ever the pragmatist, was more interested in the technical aspects of the process, peppering the staff with questions about the history and techniques of gold leaf production. I chose to decorate a small jewelry box, a memento of our time here, while Hans-Peter opted for a more practical item – a small dish for his woodworking tools. Despite our different approaches, we both thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and left with a newfound appreciation for the artistry and skill involved.

For lunch, we savored the flavors of Hakusuien, a restaurant known for its authentic teishoku meals. The restaurant itself was a beautiful example of traditional architecture, adding to the overall ambiance of the meal. I opted for a set featuring local vegetables and grilled fish, while Hans-Peter chose a hearty Hida beef dish. The food was simple, yet delicious, and the service was warm and welcoming. It was the perfect midday respite, a chance to recharge and reflect on the morning's adventures. We overheard snippets of conversation from other diners, a mix of locals and tourists, all drawn to this charming corner of Japan.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to indulge in a bit of local nightlife at Tenkara, Shirakawa, a yakiniku restaurant near Shirakawa-go. The restaurant specializes in Hida beef, and we were eager to sample this local delicacy. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We ordered a selection of different cuts of beef, and grilled them ourselves at the table. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful, and the experience was both fun and delicious. Hans-Peter, never one to shy away from a good meal, declared it the best beef he had ever tasted. I must admit, it was certainly a memorable culinary experience, a fitting end to a day of exploration and discovery. While enjoying our meal, we chatted with a local couple who shared stories about the village and its traditions. It's these interactions that truly enrich our travels, connecting us to the people and culture of the places we visit.

Our final stop of the day was Shiraogi for dinner. We were looking forward to trying more of the local cuisine. The restaurant had a traditional feel, and we settled in for a relaxing meal. I chose a set menu featuring local vegetables and river fish, while Hans-Peter opted for a hearty bowl of ramen. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect way to end a long day of exploring. As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day's experiences, feeling grateful for the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the culture and beauty of Shirakawa-go.

As we walked back to our guesthouse under the starlit sky, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. Today had been a journey into the heart of Shirakawa-go, a chance to connect with its history, its people, and its flavors. It's these kinds of experiences that make travel so rewarding, reminding us of the richness and diversity of our world. The rain is expected to continue tomorrow, but we will not let that dampen our spirits. We are looking forward to our final day here, where we plan to visit Ishiura Shrine and Nishi Chaya District before our departure the following day. I am particularly interested in visiting Oishinbo, a shop that I've heard offers a wide variety of local crafts and delicacies. I'm sure we'll find some unique souvenirs to take back home to Berlin, a reminder of our time in this enchanting corner of Japan. I must remember to buy an extra power adapter, as I had forgotten to pack one!

Tomorrow marks the end of our journey in Shirakawa-go, but the memories and experiences we've gathered will stay with us long after we've left this enchanting place. It's a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with different cultures and ways of life. And as we prepare to bid farewell to Shirakawa-go, I know that a part of us will remain here, forever touched by its beauty and its spirit.
