A Day of Ancient Wonders & Breathtaking Views
Today marked the beginning of our Cappadocian adventure, and what a start it was! The landscapes here are truly otherworldly, and I'm so excited to share our first day's experiences with you. Join me as we delve into the heart of Cappadocia's historical and natural wonders, a journey made even more special with my dearest friends.
Our day began bright and early as we gathered in the hotel lobby, buzzing with anticipation for what lay ahead. After a quick stop for a traditional Turkish breakfast at Soffy's Kitchen, we fueled up with some delicious pastries and strong Turkish coffee, ready to tackle our itinerary. The aroma of freshly baked bread and the warmth of the friendly staff made us feel instantly at home.

First on our list was the famed Göreme Open Air Museum. As a cultural mediator, I'm always drawn to places where history and human stories intertwine. This UNESCO World Heritage site was nothing short of breathtaking. Carved into the soft volcanic rock are numerous churches and monasteries, each adorned with stunning Byzantine frescoes. It felt like stepping back in time, imagining the lives of the monks who once called these caves home. The vibrant colors and intricate details of the frescoes were remarkably preserved, offering a glimpse into the religious and artistic life of the region's early Christian communities.

Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.
Wandering through the museum, I was struck by the ingenuity and dedication of these early inhabitants. The way they transformed the natural landscape into spaces of worship and community was truly inspiring. I couldn't help but draw parallels to my work with refugees in Bielefeld, helping them adapt and integrate into a new society. It's a testament to the human spirit's ability to find belonging and create a home, even in the most challenging circumstances. I made sure to take plenty of pictures to show Nadia and Lukas – I know Nadia will be especially fascinated by the stories behind the frescoes!
After immersing ourselves in history, we decided to embrace the natural beauty of Cappadocia with a visit to Uchisar Castle. Rising high above the surrounding landscape, this towering rock formation offered panoramic views of the entire region. The climb to the top was a bit strenuous, but the reward was well worth it. From the summit, we could see the rolling valleys dotted with fairy chimneys, the whimsical rock formations that Cappadocia is famous for. The view was simply mesmerizing, and we spent a good hour just soaking it all in.

Uchisar Castle itself is a fascinating structure, a maze of tunnels and rooms carved into the rock over centuries. It served as a defensive stronghold, a place of refuge for the local population during times of conflict. Exploring its depths, I couldn't help but marvel at the resourcefulness and resilience of the people who built and inhabited this remarkable place. It was also fascinating to learn about the castle's history, dating back to the Byzantine settlers around 800 AD, and its role as a vital defense point.
Next, we ventured into Pigeon Valley, a picturesque landscape known for its countless pigeon houses carved into the cliffs. These dovecotes were built by local farmers to collect pigeon droppings, which were used as fertilizer for their crops. As we hiked through the valley, we were surrounded by the gentle cooing of pigeons and the stunning views of the surrounding rock formations. The trail was easy to navigate, and the fresh air and sunshine were a welcome change after spending the morning indoors.

The valley offered a tranquil escape, a chance to connect with nature and appreciate the unique beauty of Cappadocia. We even spotted a few locals selling handmade crafts and souvenirs along the way. I picked up a small, hand-painted ceramic pigeon as a reminder of our visit. The walk from Göreme to Uchisar via Pigeon Valley is one of the most popular hikes, and I can certainly see why! The combination of natural beauty and historical significance makes it a truly unforgettable experience. I made sure to keep an eye out for unique photo opportunities, knowing my followers on Evendo would appreciate the stunning scenery.
As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Göreme, ready for a delicious dinner. We chose Pumpkin Göreme Restaurant And Art Gallery, a charming spot known for its traditional Turkish cuisine and artistic ambiance. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with colorful artwork adorning the walls. The aroma of spices filled the air, whetting our appetites.

The menu was a delightful mix of local specialties, and we decided to try a little bit of everything. We started with a selection of mezze, small plates of savory dips, salads, and pastries. Each dish was bursting with flavor, a testament to the region's rich culinary heritage. For our main courses, we opted for the testi kebab, a traditional Cappadocian dish of meat and vegetables cooked in a sealed clay pot. The presentation was quite theatrical – the waiter cracked open the pot at our table, releasing a cloud of fragrant steam.
The kebab was incredibly tender and flavorful, the meat falling off the bone. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day. The atmosphere in the restaurant was warm and convivial, and we lingered over our meal, savoring the flavors and sharing stories of our adventures. I even managed to pick up a few new Turkish phrases from our friendly waiter!
Before heading back to our hotel, we couldn't resist a quick stop at the Göreme Grand Bazaar. Although it was late, the bazaar was still bustling with activity. We wandered through the colorful stalls, admiring the intricate carpets, ceramics, and jewelry on display. I picked up a few small souvenirs for Nadia and Lukas, a reminder of our trip to this magical land. I was particularly drawn to the vibrant textiles, a fusion of traditional and modern designs that reflect Turkey's rich cultural heritage. Though I didn't buy anything extravagant, the experience of haggling with the shopkeepers and soaking in the lively atmosphere was a highlight in itself.
