Explore Cappadocia's subterranean depths and ancient history. Discover Kaymakli's secrets and the spiritual Zelve Open Air Museum.
Journey to the Depths and Back
Today was a day of contrasts, venturing into the heart of Cappadocia's ancient past and emerging into the sunlight of its unique landscapes. From the depths of an underground city to the open expanse of a monastic valley, it was a day that stirred my soul and deepened my appreciation for the layers of history etched into this remarkable region. I'm excited to share all the details with you.
Our day began early, fueled by a hearty Turkish breakfast at Görme Han Restaurant. The restaurant was a delightful experience, offering a family-friendly atmosphere and authentic Turkish cuisine. After breakfast, we set off to explore the Kaymakli Underground City.
Discover Kaymakli Underground City, an ancient marvel in Cappadocia where history and adventure intertwine beneath the earth's surface.
Kaymakli Underground City: A Subterranean Labyrinth
Descending into the Kaymakli Underground City felt like stepping into another world. This incredible network of tunnels and rooms, carved deep into the earth, once sheltered thousands of people. As I navigated the narrow passages with my friends, I imagined the lives of those who sought refuge here, their resourcefulness and resilience echoing through the ages. I was thankful I had worn comfortable walking shoes, as the terrain was uneven and required some agility.
The city is ingeniously designed, with living quarters, storage rooms, kitchens, and even a church, all hidden beneath the surface. It's hard to believe that people lived entire lives in these depths, finding safety and community in the heart of the earth. The low ceilings and narrow passageways definitely made me appreciate the open spaces above ground. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the ingenuity and determination of the people who created this subterranean world. It’s amazing to think that only a portion of this vast city has been excavated, leaving so much more to be discovered. The sheer scale of the city is impressive, a testament to the resourcefulness and resilience of its inhabitants.
The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.
As we explored, I couldn't help but think of Nadia and Lukas. Nadia would have been fascinated by the secret passages and hidden rooms, imagining herself as a brave explorer uncovering ancient mysteries. Lukas, with his technical mind, would have been intrigued by the engineering and logistical challenges of creating such a complex underground structure. I made a mental note to bring them back here someday, to experience this incredible place together.
Cappadocia: A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Discover the enchanting landscapes and rich history of Cappadocia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with fairy chimneys and ancient wonders.
Emerging from the depths of Kaymakli, we surfaced into the vast expanse of Cappadocia, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The landscape here is simply otherworldly, with its unique rock formations and ancient cave dwellings. The soft volcanic rock has been sculpted by wind and water over millions of years, creating a surreal and breathtaking panorama. Being here with my friends, surrounded by such natural beauty, made me feel incredibly grateful for this opportunity to explore and connect with the world.
Zelve Open Air Museum: Echoes of Monastic Life

Discover the unique cave churches and ancient dwellings at Zelve Open Air Museum, a captivating gem in Cappadocia's stunning landscape.
Our next stop was the Zelve Open Air Museum, an abandoned monastic valley that once housed a thriving community. Walking through the deserted cave dwellings and churches, I could almost hear the echoes of the monks who once lived and worshipped here. The museum is composed of three valleys, each offering a unique glimpse into the past. The dramatic topography, with its crags, pinnacles, and steep valleys, made it easy to imagine the challenges and rewards of monastic life in this remote setting.
The churches in Zelve are not as well-preserved as those in Göreme, but this only added to the sense of mystery and discovery. I enjoyed the freedom to climb around and explore the various caves, nooks, and crannies, feeling like an archaeologist uncovering hidden secrets. It was fascinating to learn that Christians and Muslims lived here together in harmony until the early 20th century when the Christian population was displaced due to the exchange of minorities between Greece and Turkey.
As we wandered through the valleys, I reflected on the lives of the people who once called this place home. The monks who sought solitude and spiritual enlightenment, the families who carved out homes in the rock, and the communities that thrived in this unique landscape. Their stories are etched into the very stones of Cappadocia, waiting to be discovered and shared.
Before leaving, we stopped at Cappadocia Rug Collection. While I didn’t buy anything, the vibrant colors and intricate patterns were a feast for the eyes. I have always appreciated the artistry and craftsmanship of traditional rugs, and it was fascinating to see the unique designs of the Cappadocia region.
Culinary Delights: A Taste of Cappadocia
After a day of exploration, we were ready for a delicious meal. For lunch, we headed to My Mother’s Restaurant, and it truly felt like eating in someone's home. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the food was simple, hearty, and delicious. It was the perfect way to refuel after a long day of sightseeing. The restaurant specializes in Anatolian cuisine, and everything we tried was flavorful and satisfying.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to Seten Restaurant Cappadocia for dinner. This restaurant is known for its traditional Turkish cuisine and its stunning views of Göreme. The restaurant itself is part of the Kelebek Hotel and Sultan Cave Suites complex, adding to its charm and ambiance. The name “Seten” comes from the Turkish name for the ancient round stone mill used to process grains, adding a touch of history to the dining experience. The local women of Goreme prepare special items such as Yaprak Sarma (stuffed grape leaves), Çiçek dolması (stuffed pumpkin blossoms), flatbread, soups, baked okra – all in the restaurant courtyard over an open fire, tandir (tandoori) or on traditional low wooden tables. The food was exquisite, and the panoramic views of the town and valleys were simply breathtaking. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Göreme Historical National Park and Ortahisar Castle, continuing our exploration of Cappadocia's rich history and stunning landscapes. Perhaps we'll even find time to sample some local wines at the Organic wine house, a perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing. I’m also looking forward to breakfast at Nazar Borek & Cafe.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Cappadocia is a place that truly captivates the imagination, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. It's a place where you can lose yourself in the depths of the earth and find yourself in the vastness of the landscape. And I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
My friends are what makes this trip so special. Sharing these experiences with them enriches the journey and creates memories that will last a lifetime. As I continue my exploration of Cappadocia, I am reminded of the importance of friendship, adventure, and the pursuit of knowledge. This journey is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with the past, appreciating the present, and embracing the future.
I'm also realizing how much I miss Lukas and Nadia. I am looking forward to going back home and sharing these stories with them.
