Blue Streets to Mountain Heights

Today was a day of contrasts, trading the labyrinthine blue streets of Chefchaouen for the expansive green landscapes of the nearby Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve. It was a journey that highlighted the diverse beauty Morocco has to offer, and a reminder of why I chose this destination for my solo adventure.

My day began with breakfast at Amigo, a cozy little spot I discovered just off Boulevard Mohamed V. The November air was crisp, carrying with it the scent of mint tea and freshly baked bread. I settled into a corner table, watching as the town slowly came to life. The boulevard itself is a vibrant artery, pumping life into Chefchaouen with its bustling shops and cafes. I took a stroll, camera in hand, capturing the morning light as it painted the blue walls in even softer hues. It's fascinating how the same color can appear so different depending on the time of day and the angle of the sun. I picked up a few postcards, already thinking of Clara and Maximilian back in Dresden. I know they'd adore this place, especially Clara with her love for all things colorful. Maybe next time, I'll bring them along.

After soaking in the town's atmosphere, it was time for a change of scenery. I had arranged for a taxi to take me to Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve. The drive itself was an experience, winding through the Rif Mountains, with panoramic views unfolding at every turn. The landscape shifted from the blue-washed buildings of Chefchaouen to rolling hills covered in forests of oak and pine.
Sometimes, the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take.

Jebel Bouhachem is a haven for nature lovers, and I was eager to explore its trails. I opted for a moderate hike, wanting to challenge myself without overdoing it. The air was clean and fresh, filled with the sounds of birdsong and the rustling of leaves. As I ascended, the views became even more breathtaking, with glimpses of the Mediterranean Sea in the distance. I made sure to pack my reusable water bottle and some snacks, mindful of leaving no trace behind. Sustainability is important, even when I am surrounded by nature's grandeur. I even managed to spot a few Barbary macaques! They were quite shy, but it was a thrill to see them in their natural habitat. I paused to capture a few photos, careful not to disturb them.

After a few hours of hiking, I made my way back down, feeling invigorated and at peace. There’s something about being surrounded by nature that always manages to clear my head. It was a welcome contrast to the bustling energy of Chefchaouen, offering a different perspective on the beauty of this region. I made a mental note to bring Maximilian here someday. He would love the challenge of the more difficult trails, and the panoramic views would be right up his alley.

Back in town, I was ready for lunch. Restaurant Ali Baba caught my eye with its inviting atmosphere and promise of traditional Moroccan cuisine. I ordered a tagine, savoring the rich flavors and spices that are so characteristic of this region. It was the perfect way to refuel after my hike. As I ate, I planned the rest of my day. I wanted to experience a bit of Chefchaouen's nightlife, so I decided to check out Cafe Clock.

Cafe Clock is a popular spot, known for its relaxed vibe and cultural events. It's a place where locals and tourists mingle, sharing stories and experiences. I ordered a mint tea and settled into a comfortable chair, listening to the live music that filled the air. The cafe is located near Boulevard Mohamed V, so it was easy to find. The cafe offers a rooftop seating area with nice views. It was a perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day. I even struck up a conversation with a fellow traveler from France, exchanging tips and recommendations for our respective journeys. It's these small connections that make solo travel so rewarding.

For dinner, I decided to try RESTAURANT CASA ANDALUZ, drawn in by its reputation for authentic Andalusian cuisine. The flavors were incredible, a testament to the region's rich culinary heritage. It was a delightful end to a day filled with diverse experiences. The temperature in November is mild, with highs around 66°F (19°C) and lows around 50°F (10°C), so I made sure to pack layers.

As I walked back to Hotel Dar Mounir, the blue streets were quiet and peaceful. The moon cast a soft glow, creating a magical ambiance. I felt grateful for the experiences I had today, from the vibrant energy of Boulevard Mohamed V to the serene beauty of Jebel Bouhachem. Chefchaouen is a place that truly captivates the senses, offering a unique blend of culture and nature. I am also happy I remembered to pack my travel journal, so I could capture all these memories.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Hero Eagle and Bab El Hammar [Hero Eagle and Bab El Hammar], two more of Chefchaouen's iconic landmarks. I am also looking forward to visiting Chefchaouen copper and lamps shop. I have a feeling I will find some unique souvenirs to bring back home. But for now, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of adventure in this enchanting blue city. I'm also making sure to pack my sunglasses, as I nearly forgot them today!
