Whispers of the Past, Visions of the Sea

Today was a day of connecting with the soul of Con Dao. From the ancient trees that have silently witnessed the island's history to the dramatic coastal views, every moment felt like stepping deeper into the heart of this unique destination. Daniel and I set out with a sense of anticipation, eager to uncover the stories etched into the landscape.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at TYNA FOOD & COFFEE. It's a cute little spot, perfect for fueling up before a day of exploration. I had a delicious Vietnamese coffee, strong and sweet, while Daniel opted for a matcha latte. Sipping our drinks, we discussed our plans for the day, excitement bubbling in our voices. It’s these simple moments of planning and anticipation that I truly cherish when traveling with my husband.

First on our itinerary was the Vietnam Heritage Tree. As we approached, I was immediately struck by its size and presence. These aren't just trees; they're living monuments, silent witnesses to the island's tumultuous past. I learned that many of these trees are tropical almond trees, some dating back to when the French colonial government began constructing the Con Dao prison system in 1862. Standing beneath its sprawling branches, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence. It’s humbling to think about all that this tree has seen and endured. Daniel, ever the history buff, was fascinated by the stories surrounding the tree, imagining the lives of those who sought shade beneath its leaves during difficult times.

The trees of Con Dao are not just part of the landscape; they are a living testament to the island's enduring spirit.

After spending a reflective time with the Heritage Tree, we hopped on our motorbike and headed towards Mũi Cá Mập, or Shark Cape. The ride itself was an adventure, the coastal road winding through lush greenery with glimpses of the turquoise sea. As we arrived at Shark Cape, the view was simply breathtaking. The rugged cliffs jutted out into the ocean, creating a dramatic and picturesque scene. The waves crashed against the rocks, sending sprays of water high into the air. I could see why it was named Shark Cape; the shape of the rocks really does resemble a shark's fin! We spent a good hour there, just soaking in the beauty and taking photos. I love how photography allows me to capture these moments and relive them later. Daniel, on the other hand, was more interested in finding the perfect spot to skip stones. It's these little differences that make our adventures together so much fun.

For lunch, we decided to try Nhà hàng Thu Ba. This restaurant is known for its fresh seafood and authentic Vietnamese dishes. We ordered a grilled seafood platter, which included an assortment of fish, shrimp, and squid. Everything was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. I especially enjoyed the grilled fish, which was incredibly tender and flavorful. Daniel, being the adventurous eater that he is, tried the local specialty, ốc vú nàng ( தமிழில்). He said it was an acquired taste, but he enjoyed it nonetheless. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff was incredibly friendly. It felt like we were dining with locals, which is always a plus in my book. We learned that Nhà hàng Thu Ba is one of the oldest restaurants in Con Dao, with over 30 years of experience.

After our satisfying lunch, we decided to do some shopping at Linh Bùi Store. I had read about this store online and was intrigued by its unique collection of clothing and costumes. As someone who appreciates fashion and unique finds, I was excited to see what it had to offer. The store was a treasure trove of interesting pieces, from casual wear to formal attire. I even spotted a few áo dài, traditional Vietnamese dresses. I ended up buying a beautiful silk scarf, while Daniel found a quirky t-shirt with a Con Dao-themed print. It's always fun to find souvenirs that remind us of our travels.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Nhà Hàng Bến Cảng - Seafood Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant is located right by the harbor, offering stunning oceanfront views. The ambiance was perfect for a romantic dinner, with the gentle sea breeze and the sound of the waves creating a soothing backdrop. We indulged in a feast of fresh seafood, including grilled crab, shrimp stir-fry, and their signature grilled fish. The flavors were incredible, and the presentation was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring the natural wonders of Con Dao. The restaurant prides itself on sourcing ingredients from local fishermen, ensuring each meal is not only delicious but also supports the community.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning a boat trip to Hòn Tre Lớn and some relaxation time at Dat Tham Beach. I'm also excited to check out the Sunset Lounge for evening drinks. Another day in paradise awaits!

Today was a reminder of why I love to travel. It's about discovering new places, connecting with nature, and immersing myself in different cultures. And, of course, it's about sharing these experiences with the one I love. As we headed back to our guesthouse, hand in hand, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Con Dao, you have captured my heart. And I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
