Day 3: Shadows of the Past, Glimmers of Hope

Today was a day of deep reflection as Daniel and I immersed ourselves in the poignant history and serene spirituality of Con Dao. It was a day that touched our hearts and minds, leaving us with a profound appreciation for the resilience of the human spirit.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Madame Hà - Vegetarian Cuisine. I must admit, I was a bit skeptical about a vegetarian breakfast, but the flavors were surprisingly delightful. The fresh spring rolls and the savory tofu bánh mì were a perfect start to a day that promised both somber reflection and serene discovery. It's always a pleasure finding spots that challenge my preconceptions, especially when they involve delicious food.

Our first stop was the infamous Côn Đảo Prison. As we walked through the gates, a palpable sense of sorrow and oppression washed over us. The prison, once dubbed 'hell on earth,' stands as a chilling testament to the brutal conditions endured by Vietnamese political prisoners under French colonial rule and later, the US-backed South Vietnamese government.

After paying our respects, we drove to Con Son Seafood restaurant for lunch. After such a heavy morning, we needed a change of pace and something to lift our spirits. The restaurant was bustling with activity, and the aroma of fresh seafood filled the air. We ordered grilled prawns and a flavorful fish stew, savoring each bite as we looked out over the turquoise waters. The meal was a delightful sensory experience, a reminder of the simple pleasures in life and the beauty of the natural world surrounding us.

Our final stop for the day was Van Son Pagoda. Perched on the slopes of Nui Mot Mountain, the pagoda offered breathtaking views of Con Son Bay. As we climbed the steps to the temple, a sense of tranquility washed over us. The air was filled with the gentle sounds of chanting and the scent of incense.

We admired the traditional Vietnamese Buddhist architecture, the graceful curved roofs, and the serene Buddha statues. We lit incense and offered prayers for peace and harmony, feeling a sense of connection to something greater than ourselves.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we stopped at ULA Restaurant & Bar Con Dao for dinner. The restaurant had a cool, beach bar vibe with funky decorations and a relaxed atmosphere. We ordered some delicious cocktails and enjoyed the sea breeze as we reminisced about the day's experiences. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on everything we had seen and learned.
