Cosmic Views and Ancient Echoes

Today was a beautiful blend of celestial exploration and historical immersion. Crete continues to surprise me with its diverse offerings, from stargazing to ancient engineering marvels. It’s days like these that make me so grateful for the opportunity to travel and share these experiences.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Rousios. Fuelling up with traditional Cretan fare was essential before our adventures. David and I shared a plate of Dakos, a barley rusk topped with fresh tomatoes, mizithra cheese, and a generous drizzle of olive oil. It's simple, yet bursting with flavour – the perfect way to start a day of exploring.

Journey to the Stars

After breakfast, we drove up to the Greleskas Observatory. The crisp mountain air was invigorating as we approached the dome. While the observatory is impressive during the day, I was particularly excited about the prospect of seeing the night sky from this vantage point. Unfortunately, due to some unforeseen technical difficulties, the observatory wasn't fully operational for stargazing. However, we were given a fascinating tour of the facilities and learned about the research being conducted there. The guide explained the observatory's mission to monitor the night sky and educate the public about astronomy. It was inspiring to hear about their work, and I left with a renewed appreciation for the cosmos.

Echoes of the Roman Empire

Next on our itinerary was the Roman Aqueduct. I've always been fascinated by Roman engineering, and the aqueduct on Crete is a testament to their ingenuity. As we approached the site, I was struck by the scale of the structure. The aqueduct, built in the 2nd century AD, stretches for miles, a remarkable feat of engineering. Walking along the remains of the aqueduct, I could almost hear the echoes of Roman engineers and workers who built this marvel. It was incredible to think that this structure once supplied water to the ancient city of Knossos.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

The aqueduct at Chersonesos is one of the most impressive examples of Roman hydraulic engineering on Crete. Spanning 14 kilometers, it drew water from distant sources and fed a massive cistern capable of holding thousands of cubic meters. These aqueducts supported urban development and economic activities, showcasing the Romans' commitment to developing the island's infrastructure.

A Taste of Crete

After a morning of exploration, we were ready for lunch. We headed to SAMARIA restaurant for a traditional Cretan meal. The aroma of grilled meats and fresh herbs filled the air as we walked in. We ordered a selection of mezes to share, including dolmades (stuffed vine leaves), moussaka, and grilled lamb chops. Each dish was bursting with flavour, a testament to the freshness of the local ingredients. The moussaka was particularly memorable, rich and satisfying with layers of eggplant, potatoes, and a creamy béchamel sauce.

Sunset Drinks and Seaside Delights

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way to Liviko bar for a relaxing evening drink. The bar had a laid-back vibe, with comfortable seating and a stunning view of the sea. I ordered a local wine, while David opted for a refreshing cocktail. We sat and watched the sunset, the sky ablaze with hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

For dinner, we chose Taverna Tarra, enticed by its reputation for authentic Greek cuisine and a welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively and convivial atmosphere. We started with a Greek salad, the tomatoes and cucumbers bursting with flavour, followed by grilled seafood. The fish was cooked to perfection, flaky and moist, and seasoned with just the right amount of herbs and spices. We finished our meal with a traditional Cretan dessert, a sweet cheese pie drizzled with honey. It was the perfect ending to a delicious meal.

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Zarana's caves and relax on Akrogiali beach. I'm particularly excited about visiting the caves, as I've heard they're filled with stunning stalactites and stalagmites. A visit to Nature - Cretan natural products shop is also on the cards. I'm hoping to find some unique souvenirs to take back home to Berlin.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences I've had today. Crete is a truly magical place, full of surprises and hidden gems. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings.

This trip has been such a wonderful escape from my daily routine in Berlin. While I love my work as an environmental consultant, it's important to take time to disconnect and recharge. Traveling with David and our friends makes the experience even more special. Sharing these moments with loved ones is what truly makes a trip unforgettable.
