Exploring the Hidden Gems of Vilcabamba: A Trekking Adventure in Peru
Day 3: Conquering Heights and Cultural Gems: A Day on the Vilcabamba Trek
Join Emily as she hikes to Laguna Viconga and explores local art, experiencing the beauty and culture of the Vilcabamba Trek.
Day 3: Peaks, Paintings, and Peruvian Charm
Today was a day of reaching new heights, both literally and figuratively! The Vilcabamba Trek continues to challenge and reward us in equal measure, offering stunning views and unique cultural experiences. I'm constantly reminded why I chose this adventure, trading the familiar streets of Lyon for the rugged beauty of Peru.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at El Huerto Restaurant, which was a delightful start to a challenging day. Chef Emilio's innovative style and use of fresh, local ingredients truly set the tone for what was to come. Fuelled up, we set off towards Laguna Viconga de Uramasa, a shimmering jewel nestled high in the Cordillera de Vilcabamba.
The hike to Laguna Viconga was demanding, to say the least. The altitude of 4,468 meters definitely made its presence felt. I found myself pausing more frequently to catch my breath, but the views were more than worth it. The landscape transformed into a breathtaking panorama of rugged peaks and lush valleys. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the wind and the occasional cry of a bird. It was a world away from the hustle and bustle of Lyon, and I felt incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be there.
As we ascended, the scenery became increasingly dramatic. The Cordillera de Vilcabamba, with its snow-capped peaks, loomed large, creating a stunning backdrop to our trek. The weather in December here is quite interesting, with daytime temperatures around 22°C and nighttime temperatures dropping to about 13°C. We were prepared for rain, as December is known to have heavy rainfall in this region, so ponchos were at the ready.
Finally, we reached Laguna Viconga. The sight of the turquoise waters, reflecting the surrounding mountains, was simply mesmerizing. The lagoon, at an altitude of 4,480 meters, is surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of León Dormido and Cóndor. The landscape was stunning, a mix of fertile fields and snowy peaks that left me in awe.

Sometimes, the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take.
After soaking in the beauty of Laguna Viconga, we began our descent. The downhill trek was a welcome relief on our tired legs, and we made good time. We stopped for lunch at Sol del Venado, where we enjoyed a hearty meal with a view. I even tried some local craft beer, which was a refreshing treat after a long hike.
In the afternoon, we had the chance to explore the local culture with a visit to Inlakesh Peruvian Art & Design Store. Located in Urubamba, the store is a treasure trove of handcrafted goods, from colorful textiles to intricate pottery and unique jewelry. I was particularly drawn to the alpaca wool scarves, which were incredibly soft and warm. I ended up buying a beautiful scarf for Sophie, knowing she would love it.
What struck me most about Inlakesh was the dedication to promoting local artisans and their work. Each piece told a story of craftsmanship passed down through generations, and I felt good knowing that my purchase was supporting the local community. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the art, enriching my shopping experience with cultural insights.
For dinner, we enjoyed a delicious meal at Hostería Paraíso Vilcabamba. The restaurant offered a relaxing atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a long day of trekking. I especially enjoyed the garden views and the opportunity to relax by the pool.
Today was a challenging but incredibly rewarding day. The Vilcabamba Trek continues to surprise and delight me at every turn. From the stunning landscapes to the vibrant local culture, this journey is truly a feast for the senses. I am so grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Peru, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I'm especially looking forward to exploring the Caverna Turística Jatun Uchco tomorrow, although I might skip La chupiteria the shot bar in the evening, as my legs will likely need a rest!
I'm starting to feel like a true Peruvian explorer, even though Jean-Pierre would probably laugh at me for saying that. He always teases me about my tendency to romanticize things, but I can't help it. There's something about this country that just captures my imagination. Maybe it's the history, the culture, or the breathtaking landscapes. Or maybe it's just the fact that I'm finally doing something I've always dreamed of.
Whatever it is, I'm incredibly grateful for this experience. And I can't wait to share more of my adventures with you all. Stay tuned for tomorrow's update, as we continue our journey through the hidden gems of Vilcabamba.
As I reflect on the day, I'm reminded of a quote from one of my favorite travel writers, Pico Iyer: We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next, to find ourselves. This trek is certainly helping me do both.
Goodnight from the Andes!
