Day 4: Cusco's Charms Above and Below
Today was a whirlwind of exploration, taking us from the depths of ancient caves to the heights of culinary delight and the vibrant energy of Cusco's nightlife. It's amazing how much this city has to offer, and I'm so excited to share all the details.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Chullos Restaurant & Craft Beer. I had heard amazing things about their Andean cuisine and craft beer selection. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our morning adventure. The restaurant had a warm and inviting ambiance, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home.
With bellies full, we headed to Caverna Turística Jatun Uchco, a cave known for its archaeological and paleontological significance. The drive itself was stunning, offering panoramic views of the Ambo Valley. Jatun Uchco, which means Big Hole in Quechua, definitely lived up to its name. The cave is located about 500 meters south of Ambo, nestled in the Yunga Fluvial natural region at 2,206 meters above sea level.

The cave has two entrances, one of which requires a daring climb using a rope. We opted for the slightly less adventurous entrance, but it was still quite a thrill. Inside, we were greeted by narrow passages and spacious chambers adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. It was incredible to think that this cave was once home to early humans and various animal species.
The earth has music for those who listen.
According to archaeological studies, Jatun Uchco served as a shelter for primitive humans from Pergaypata around 14,000 BC. Proof of this includes the discovery of a complete, petrified human skull, as well as stone tools like projectile points and knives. There are also three chambers with paleontological remains, mainly from carnivores like felines and canines. While exploring the cave, I tried to imagine what life must have been like for those early inhabitants. It was a humbling experience, connecting us to the deep history of this land.
After our subterranean adventure, we were ready for a delicious lunch. We made our way to Hacienda Huayoccari in the Sacred Valley, a place recommended for an off-the-beaten-path experience. This hidden gem is a private estate owned by the Lambarri-Orihuela family, filled with lush gardens and a fascinating collection of pre-Columbian, Incan, and colonial artifacts. The hacienda is located in the village of Huayoccari and offers stunning views of the Sacred Valley.

Upon arrival, we were greeted with a refreshing pisco sour and invited to explore the family's private museum. It was like stepping back in time, surrounded by ancient pottery, textiles, and religious art. I was particularly impressed by the collection of *qeros*, traditional Andean drinking vessels. The dining area was equally enchanting, with colorful colonial wood carvings and views of the surrounding gardens.
For lunch, we indulged in traditional Peruvian cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients. The menu featured classic dishes like causa, ají de gallina, and lomo saltado. I opted for the steamed trout in caper butter sauce, while some of my friends tried the sirloin steak with pisco and mushroom quinotto. Everything was bursting with flavor, and it felt like we were dining in someone's home. The hacienda truly offers a unique and authentic taste of Peruvian heritage.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to Cusco and decided to experience the city's nightlife. We ended up at La Chupiteria the shot bar, known for its creative and exciting shots. The bar had a vibrant atmosphere, with lively music and a friendly crowd. The bartenders were skilled and attentive, crafting unique concoctions inspired by Peruvian ingredients. We tried a variety of shots, each more daring than the last. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration and immerse ourselves in the local culture.

Before heading to La Chupiteria, we had dinner at Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant. The restaurant is known for its high-quality craft beer menu and delicious Peruvian cuisine. I savored every bite of the trout ceviche, while others enjoyed the osso buco and lomo saltado. The restaurant also boasts a stunning view of the river, making it the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a meal.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to tackle the San Antonio Pass and explore the Cordillera Huayhuash. I'm a little nervous about the high altitude, but also incredibly excited to witness the breathtaking mountain scenery. We'll start the day with breakfast at El museo de la papa rest, followed by lunch at United Falafel Org. In the afternoon, we'll visit the Handicraft Center Cusco for some souvenir shopping.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the diverse beauty of Cusco. From the depths of Jatun Uchco to the heights of Hacienda Huayoccari and the vibrant nightlife, this city has truly captured my heart. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
December in Cusco is proving to be an amazing time to visit. While it can be rainy, the temperatures are mild, ranging from highs of 22°C to lows of 14°C. Plus, there are so many festive events happening this month, including the Santurantikuy Christmas fair on December 24th. This fair brings together artisans and merchants from across the region to showcase their folk art, including nativity scenes, ceramics, and textiles. It's a wonderful opportunity to experience the local culture and find unique souvenirs.
Before drifting off to sleep, I’m already anticipating tomorrow’s adventure. Wish us luck as we ascend to new heights!
