Exploring the Hidden Gems of Vilcabamba: A Trekking Adventure in Peru
Day 5: Conquering the Heights: A Day of Breathtaking Views and Cultural Finds in Peru
Embark on a Vilcabamba Trek adventure, scaling San Antonio Pass, beholding Cordillera Huayhuash, and exploring Cusco's vibrant Handicraft Center.
Reaching New Heights & Embracing Culture
Today was a day of incredible physical challenges and equally rewarding cultural experiences. From the dizzying heights of San Antonio Pass to the vibrant stalls of Cusco's Handicraft Center, Peru continues to surprise and inspire me. I'm so excited to share the details of our fifth day on the Vilcabamba Trek!
Explore the breathtaking San Antonio Pass in the Andes, a hiking paradise with stunning views and rich biodiversity for every adventurer.
Our day started with a hearty breakfast at El museo de la papa rest. After a quick bite, we packed up our camp and started our ascent towards San Antonio Pass. The air was crisp and cool, and the views were already starting to become spectacular. The climb was definitely challenging, but the promise of panoramic vistas kept us motivated. Jean-Pierre, ever the supportive husband, kept my spirits high with his unwavering encouragement.
As we climbed, the landscape transformed. The trees thinned out, replaced by rugged rocks and windswept grasses. The altitude definitely made things tougher, and I found myself stopping more frequently to catch my breath. But with each step, the world below seemed to shrink, and the mountains around us grew taller and more majestic. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer scale of the Andes.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, we reached the summit of San Antonio Pass. The view was simply breathtaking. The Cordillera Huayhuash stretched out before us, a jagged wall of snow-capped peaks piercing the sky. It was a moment that made all the sweat and effort worthwhile. We spent a good half-hour just soaking it all in, snapping photos, and letting the vastness of the landscape sink into our souls.

Sometimes, the greatest views come after the hardest climbs.
After descending from the pass, we stopped for a well deserved lunch at United Falafel Org. The falafel was delicious and gave us the energy we needed to continue our trek. The afternoon brought us through more stunning mountain scenery, with crystal-clear streams and meadows dotted with wildflowers. We even spotted a few vicuñas grazing in the distance. The wildlife here is simply incredible!
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we reached our campsite. We quickly set up our tents and then gathered around to prepare dinner. Tonight's menu was courtesy of Healthy & Tasty. With full bellies and tired muscles, we settled into our tents for a well-deserved night's sleep.
But the day wasn't over just yet! After dinner, while the others rested, I decided to take a stroll through the Handicraft Center Cusco. I was eager to find some unique souvenirs to bring back home to Lyon. The center was a maze of stalls, each overflowing with colorful textiles, intricate pottery, and handcrafted jewelry. I was immediately drawn to the vibrant weavings, each telling a story of Andean culture and tradition. I spent hours wandering through the market, admiring the skill and artistry of the local artisans.

I ended up buying a beautiful alpaca scarf for Sophie, a hand-painted ceramic bowl for Jean-Pierre, and a small woven tapestry for myself. Each item is a reminder of this incredible journey, a tangible piece of Peru to bring back home. It was fascinating to see the Andean chess sets with conquistadors vs Incas.
As I walked back to our campsite, the stars began to appear in the night sky. The air was still and silent, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me. Today had been a day of physical challenges, breathtaking beauty, and cultural immersion. I couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring.
Tomorrow promises a new set of challenges and rewards, as we prepare to tackle the Cacanapunta Pass. I'm looking forward to the stunning views from the pass, and I'm also excited to try out Kishor's Herbals and Bistro for breakfast. And who knows, maybe we'll even have time to stop by El Muki bar in the evening for a celebratory drink!
This trek has been an incredible experience so far, and I'm so grateful to be sharing it with my friends. I already know that this is a trip I'll remember for the rest of my life.
I’m really glad I remembered to bring my travel journal. I can’t imagine trying to recall all of this without it! I really miss Jean-Pierre and Sophie but I know this trip is something I need to do for myself.
Until tomorrow,
Emily
