A Day of Temples and Tranquility

Today was all about diving deeper into Kyoto's spiritual heart. I'm so grateful to be sharing this adventure with my friends, and each day brings new discoveries that I can't wait to share. From the serene gardens of Daitoku-ji Temple, to the golden shimmer of Kinkaku-ji and the blessings at Kyoto Ebisu Shrine, Kyoto continues to enchant us with its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at The Cellar Kyoto. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of temple hopping. The cozy atmosphere and delicious pastries set a positive tone for what was to come. I really enjoyed the pastries, which reminded me of some of my favorite bakeries back in Lyon.

First on our itinerary was Daitoku-ji Temple. This expansive temple complex is like a small, walled city, housing numerous sub-temples. The free public grounds were beautiful, offering a glimpse into the traditional architecture and serene landscapes that Kyoto is known for. We wandered through the grounds, admiring the intricate details of the buildings and the peaceful ambiance. I found myself particularly drawn to the rock gardens, which evoked a sense of calm and contemplation. It reminded me a bit of some modern art installations I've seen in France, where the arrangement of space and natural elements creates a powerful emotional impact.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its famous landmarks, but in the quiet moments of reflection found within its serene spaces.

Next, we headed to Kyoto Ebisu Shrine. This charming Shinto shrine is dedicated to Ebisu, one of the Seven Gods of Fortune, and is known as one of the oldest Ebisu shrines. I found the story of Ebisu particularly touching. Legend says he was born with deformities and abandoned by his parents, only to be rescued by a kind fisherman. Despite his difficult beginnings, he rose to become a beloved deity of good fortune, watching over fishermen, laborers, and children. It's a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of community, values that resonate deeply with me.

The shrine itself was bustling with activity, as many locals were stopping by to pay their respects and seek blessings for business prosperity and family safety. We learned that Ebisu is considered hard of hearing, so visitors often pat the wall of the main shrine to get his attention before making a wish. It was a unique and endearing custom that added to the shrine's charm. I made sure to give the wall a good pat before whispering my own hopes for our travels and the well-being of my family, including Jean-Pierre and Sophie back home in Lyon.

Afterward, we stopped by Kazari Nishiki in Nishiki Market. This shop is a treasure trove of seasonal Japanese goods and Western clothing with a Kyoto touch. I loved browsing through the cute crafts and unique clothing items. The owner has a great eye for detail and a passion for the seasons, which is reflected in the store's ever-changing displays. I picked up a beautiful silk scarf with a delicate cherry blossom pattern, a perfect memento of our spring trip to Kyoto. I thought it would be a nice gift for my mother, who always appreciates a touch of elegance.

For lunch, we decided to try Komefuku, a restaurant known for its delicious and reasonably priced Japanese cuisine. We opted for the lunch set, which included tempura and sushi. The tempura was perfectly crispy, and the sushi was incredibly fresh. It was a satisfying and authentic meal that gave us a taste of local flavors. I was particularly impressed by the quality of the ingredients, a testament to Japan's commitment to culinary excellence.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly our visit to Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. As we approached the temple, the sight of the shimmering golden structure reflecting in the pond took my breath away. It was even more stunning in person than in any photograph I had seen. The top two floors are covered in gold leaf, creating a dazzling effect that seems to glow in the sunlight. The temple is surrounded by meticulously manicured gardens, adding to the overall sense of tranquility and beauty. The gardens were lovely, and I can only imagine how beautiful they must look when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom.

We strolled around the pond, taking in the breathtaking views from every angle. The temple's reflection in the water created a magical scene, and I couldn't resist snapping dozens of photos. It was a truly unforgettable experience, one that I will cherish for years to come.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Yasakadori Enraku for dinner. This restaurant is located on Yasaka-dori Street near Kenninji Temple, offering a traditional Japanese dining experience in private rooms. We enjoyed a delicious meal of local specialties, savoring the delicate flavors and elegant presentation. It was the perfect way to end a day of temple exploration, surrounded by the beauty and tranquility of Kyoto.

Thinking about tomorrow, I'm excited to explore Nishiki Market, Kenninji Temple, and Gion Corner. I'm also looking forward to a relaxing drink at Kyoto Star Bar. I'm sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences.

Reflecting on today, I'm reminded of how fortunate I am to be able to travel and experience different cultures. It's a privilege that I don't take for granted, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to share my adventures with you all. Until tomorrow, sayōnara!
