Kyoto's Quiet Charms
Today was a day of gentle exploration, a serene counterpoint to some of the busier days we've had so far. Kyoto has this amazing ability to offer both bustling city life and pockets of absolute tranquility, and today, I was determined to find the latter. I was particularly excited to explore some of the more northern parts of the city, areas I hadn’t yet had the chance to visit.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at MUGHAL Indian Restaurant & Bar. It might seem odd to start a day in Kyoto with Indian food, but I’ve learned that sometimes the best travel experiences come from unexpected places. Plus, I was craving something spicy to kickstart my morning! I remember Jean-Pierre once teasing me about my love for spicy food, saying it was my American genes rebelling against the subtle flavors of French cuisine. I chuckled at the memory as I savored a flavorful curry. After breakfast, we set off to explore the northern reaches of Kyoto, starting with Shimogamo Shrine.
Explore the serene beauty and rich cultural heritage of Shimogamo Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kyoto, Japan.
Shimogamo Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was breathtaking. The shrine is one of Kyoto's oldest and most important, nestled at the junction of the Kamo and Takano rivers. The serene atmosphere was immediately calming. The ancient trees, the gentle sound of the river, and the meticulously maintained grounds created a sense of timelessness. It was easy to see why this place has been a spiritual center for centuries. I wandered through the Tadasu no Mori forest, feeling a world away from the city, despite being right on its edge. The sunlight dappled through the leaves, creating an ethereal glow on the moss-covered stones and ancient structures. I took my time, soaking in the peaceful ambiance and reflecting on the history that permeated the air. I've read that Shimogamo Shrine is the site of the Yabusame Shinji, a captivating horseback archery display held annually, but unfortunately it will take place on May 3rd, so I will miss it this time. Maybe next year!
The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.
Next on the itinerary was Kamigamo Shrine, located a short distance up the road. Also a UNESCO World Heritage site, Kamigamo Shrine is even older than Shimogamo. As I approached, I was struck by the impressive architecture and the sense of history. This shrine is known for its beautiful gardens and its association with the Aoi Matsuri festival. I explored the grounds, admiring the intricate details of the buildings and the carefully manicured landscapes. The air felt crisp and clean, and the quiet was broken only by the occasional chirping of birds. I found myself drawn to the small stream that runs through the shrine, its gentle flow adding to the sense of tranquility. It was fascinating to imagine the countless generations who had walked these same paths, seeking solace and connection with the divine. I've learned that Kamigamo Shrine is the site of the Kamo Kurabeuma Horse Race, part of Kyoto's historic Aoi Matsuri Festival that will be held on May 5th. I also discovered that the shrine hosts the Kyokusui no en, an elegant cultural event that preserves ancient traditions, but I missed it as it was held on April 13th. I made a mental note to check the local events calendar more carefully next time!

After a morning of spiritual exploration, it was time to immerse myself in the natural beauty of the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. Spring is the perfect time to visit, with cherry blossoms still lingering and a riot of other flowers in full bloom. The gardens are extensive, offering a wide variety of landscapes and plant collections. I wandered through the rose garden, inhaling the intoxicating fragrance of hundreds of blooms. I explored the conservatory, marveling at the exotic plants from around the world. I even stumbled upon a traditional Japanese garden, complete with a serene pond and meticulously placed stones. The Kyoto Botanical Gardens are also known for the Cherry Blossom Light-up event and extended opening hours during the spring season, but unfortunately the survey ended on April 11th. It was a lovely way to spend the afternoon, reconnecting with nature and enjoying the simple beauty of the botanical world. I made sure to take tons of pictures, as I know Sophie will love seeing them when I get back to Lyon.

For lunch, I decided to try Anzukko, a small restaurant known for its delicious gyoza. After a morning of serene exploration, I was ready for something a bit more lively and flavorful. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the aroma of sizzling gyoza filled the air. I ordered a set menu, eager to sample a variety of their specialties. The gyoza were perfectly crispy on the outside, with a juicy and flavorful filling. I especially enjoyed the unique combinations, like the cheese and pork gyoza, which was surprisingly delicious. It was a satisfying and comforting meal, and the perfect way to refuel after a long day of walking.

As evening approached, I decided to indulge in a truly special dining experience at French Dining Top of Kyoto. Located on the 14th floor of the Rihga Royal Hotel, this revolving restaurant offers panoramic views of the city. I arrived just as the sun was beginning to set, and the sky was ablaze with color. As the restaurant slowly rotated, I was treated to a 360-degree view of Kyoto's skyline, with its ancient temples and modern buildings blending seamlessly together. The food was exquisite, a perfect blend of French techniques and Japanese ingredients. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. It was a truly memorable meal, and a perfect way to celebrate my time in this amazing city. I've read that the interior is adorned with hand-printed traditional Japanese paper from Kira Karacho, an artisan atelier in business since 1624, which created a unique and elegant atmosphere.

To cap off the evening, I ventured to Bar Fishbowl, a quirky little spot known for its extensive selection of Japanese whiskeys and craft beers. I settled into a comfortable seat and ordered a glass of local craft beer, savoring the hoppy aroma and the smooth taste. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, and I struck up a conversation with a local who shared some insider tips about the best hidden gems in Kyoto. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration, and to soak in the local vibe.
