Kyoto's Many Facets: A Day of Trains, Films, and Temples

Today was a whirlwind of experiences that truly captured the essence of Kyoto – a city where the modern and the traditional intertwine seamlessly. From exploring the history of Japanese railways to stepping onto a movie set and finding serenity in an ancient temple, it was a day filled with discoveries and delightful surprises.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Saishuan Shiraki. I had read great reviews about their traditional Japanese breakfast sets, and I was eager to try it. The restaurant was cozy, with a calming atmosphere that was perfect for starting the day. I opted for the grilled fish set, which came with miso soup, rice, and various small side dishes. Everything was so fresh and flavorful, and it was a wonderful way to fuel up for a day of exploring. Jean-Pierre would have loved this place, especially the fish!

With our stomachs full and our spirits high, our first stop was the Kyoto Railway Museum. I've always been fascinated by trains, and I knew this museum would be a treat, but I wasn't prepared for just how impressive it would be. The museum is vast, showcasing a wide range of locomotives and railway cars from different eras. From the sleek, futuristic Shinkansen bullet trains to the charming, old-fashioned steam engines, it was a journey through the history of Japanese railways. It was truly amazing to see the evolution of train technology over the years. I couldn't help but imagine Sophie's excitement if she were here; she would have loved climbing into the driver's seat of the old steam engines. I made a mental note to bring her here someday. I picked up a few postcards at the gift shop for her – I know she'll adore them. The sheer scale of the trains was awe-inspiring, and I found myself snapping photos at every turn. It's amazing how something so functional can also be so beautiful.

After immersing ourselves in the world of trains, we headed to Toei Kyoto Studio Park, a place where the silver screen comes to life. This theme park is actually a working film studio, and it was incredible to see the sets and costumes used in historical dramas. As we walked through the Edo-period streets, I felt like I had stepped back in time. We even caught a glimpse of a film crew shooting a scene! The attention to detail was remarkable, and it was fascinating to see how these historical dramas are made. We watched a ninja show, which was incredibly entertaining. The performers were so skilled, and the stunts were breathtaking. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. It reminded me of some of the old samurai films Jean-Pierre and I used to watch together when we first met. I wonder if he would have enjoyed the ninja show as much as I did. I think he would have. Apparently, there's a Ninja Extreme Party going on at the park right now. I'm not sure what that entails, but it sounds like fun!

Lunch was at Yoshikawa, a restaurant recommended for its traditional Kyoto cuisine. The restaurant had a serene atmosphere, with beautiful gardens and private rooms. We opted for the tempura set, which was exquisite. The vegetables were so fresh and the batter was light and crispy. It was a true culinary delight. I savored every bite, appreciating the artistry and skill that went into preparing such a delicate dish. I tried to imagine recreating some of the dishes at home in Lyon, but I knew I could never quite capture the authentic flavors of Kyoto.

In the afternoon, we sought a bit of tranquility at Kōdai-ji Temple. Founded in 1606 by the widow of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of Japan's most important historical figures, the temple exudes a sense of peace and history. As we walked through the serene gardens, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The meticulously raked gravel gardens, the ancient trees, and the gentle sound of water created a truly meditative atmosphere. The temple's main hall, rebuilt in 1912 after a fire, was beautiful in its simplicity. I particularly enjoyed the bamboo grove, which was cool and shady, offering a respite from the afternoon sun. The temple's history is fascinating, and I learned that Hideyoshi and his wife are worshiped at a sanctuary on the grounds. It's amazing to think about the stories and events that have unfolded within these walls over the centuries.

Before dinner, we stopped by Japan Culture & Character Shop Guf 京都店. I wanted to find a unique souvenir to bring back to Sophie, and I knew this shop would have something special. The shop was filled with anime merchandise, from figures and t-shirts to keychains and stickers. I finally settled on a cute Totoro plushie for Sophie, which I know she'll love. I also picked up a few small trinkets for Jean-Pierre and my friends. It's always fun to find little reminders of our travels to share with loved ones. It's amazing how much the Japanese love their anime and manga characters. I can see why; they're so endearing and full of personality.

For dinner, we indulged in a delightful experience at Premium Pound Gion, known for its exquisite wagyu beef. The restaurant had a modern, stylish ambiance, and the staff were incredibly attentive. We ordered the chef's selection of wagyu cuts, which were cooked to perfection on a small grill at our table. The meat was so tender and flavorful, it practically melted in my mouth. It was a true culinary masterpiece. I paired my meal with a glass of sake, which complemented the richness of the beef perfectly. It was a luxurious end to a day of exploration and discovery. I made a note to try and find a similar restaurant in Lyon, but I knew it wouldn't be quite the same as experiencing it in Kyoto.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a vibrant and fascinating city. Kyoto has a way of captivating your senses and leaving you wanting more. The blend of history, culture, and modernity is truly unique, and I'm so glad I had the chance to immerse myself in it.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Shimogamo Shrine, Kamigamo Shrine, and the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. I'm looking forward to exploring more of Kyoto's natural beauty and ancient traditions. I've heard that Shimogamo Shrine is particularly beautiful, with its lush greenery and peaceful atmosphere. And I'm excited to see the variety of plants and flowers at the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. I'm sure it will be another day filled with wonder and discovery.

I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings! Goodnight from Kyoto!
