Exploring the Natural Wonders of Huaraz with David
Day 6: Conquering Peaks and Discovering Hidden Gems in Huaraz
A day of breathtaking views, delicious Peruvian cuisine, and cultural immersion in Huaraz with David. Join our Andean adventure!
Summiting the Cordillera Blanca and Finding Huaraz's Soul
Today was a day of incredible highs, both literally and figuratively! We pushed ourselves to new limits, soaked in panoramic vistas, and discovered the heart of Huaraz through its food and crafts. It's days like these that remind me why David and I traded our Berlin apartment for a life of travel, seeking out authentic experiences and sharing them with all of you.
Our day began, as most do, with the promise of adventure. We fueled up at Cafe Andino, a colorful little spot that's become our go-to for breakfast in Huaraz. The coffee was strong, the fresh juice invigorating, and the view of the surrounding mountains – even from town – was enough to get our adrenaline pumping. It's amazing how a simple breakfast can set the tone for an entire day, especially when enjoyed with such stunning scenery. I opted for a hearty vegetarian burrito, while David went for the traditional Peruvian breakfast. We both left feeling ready to tackle whatever the day had in store.
Our main objective for today was to experience the majesty of the Cordillera Blanca. While summiting Huascarán, the highest mountain in Peru, would be a multi-day expedition for serious climbers, we aimed for a more accessible, yet equally rewarding, experience. We drove towards what we hoped would be a good vantage point, somewhere that would allow us to soak in the grandeur of this mountain range. The drive itself was an adventure, with winding roads clinging to the mountainside and offering glimpses of the valley below.
We eventually arrived at Mirador Huallcor, a viewpoint that promised stunning panoramic views. The air was crisp and thin, a reminder of the altitude, but the sight that greeted us was worth every breath. The Cordillera Blanca stretched out before us, a jagged wall of snow-capped peaks piercing the sky. Huascarán stood tall among its brethren, a silent giant watching over the valley.

The mountains were a symphony of rock and ice, a testament to the raw power and breathtaking beauty of nature.
I felt a sense of awe wash over me, a feeling of being small yet connected to something immense and ancient. David, ever the pragmatist, was busy snapping photos, trying to capture the scene's grandeur, but even he couldn't hide the wonder in his eyes. We spent a long time there, simply breathing in the mountain air and letting the scenery sink into our souls. It's moments like these that make all the challenges of travel worthwhile.
After our mountain interlude, we descended back into Huaraz, our stomachs rumbling with anticipation for lunch. Today's choice was BUEN GUSTO Restaurant Fusión Selvática, a place that promised a unique culinary experience, blending traditional Peruvian flavors with those of the Amazon rainforest. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with colorful décor and the aroma of exotic spices filling the air. We decided to share a few dishes, starting with the ceviche de chocho, a local specialty made with a type of lupin bean. It was unlike any ceviche I'd ever tasted, with a slightly bitter, earthy flavor that was surprisingly refreshing. We also tried a dish featuring paiche, a massive Amazonian fish, grilled to perfection and served with plantains and a vibrant sauce. It was a true fusion of flavors, a testament to Peru's incredible biodiversity and culinary creativity.
With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to explore Huaraz itself, seeking out a taste of local culture and craftsmanship. We stumbled upon FOLK Huaraz, a charming little shop brimming with handmade treasures. From intricately woven textiles to colorful ceramics and jewelry, every item told a story of the region's rich heritage. I was particularly drawn to the textiles, the vibrant colors and intricate patterns reflecting the beauty of the surrounding landscape. I ended up buying a small, hand-woven bag, a perfect souvenir to remind me of our time in Huaraz. David, surprisingly, found a beautiful ceramic llama that he insisted on buying for his desk back in Berlin.

As the afternoon waned, we found ourselves craving something sweet. So, we headed to Mi Comedia - Pizzeria for dinner. I know, pizza might seem like an odd choice in Peru, but we had heard rave reviews about their wood-fired pizzas and homemade desserts. And let me tell you, they did not disappoint! The pizza was delicious, with a perfectly crispy crust and fresh, local toppings. But the real star of the show was the chocolate cake. Rich, decadent, and utterly irresistible, it was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Querococha Lake and the Túnel Punta Olímpica. I've heard that the lake is stunningly beautiful, reflecting the surrounding mountains in its crystal-clear waters, and the tunnel is an engineering marvel, the highest road tunnel in the world. We are also planning to visit Mercado Central de Huaraz to get a real feel for the local culture and pick up some souvenirs. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
