Exploring the Natural Wonders of Huaraz with David
Day 5: Stepping Back in Time: Exploring Ancient Cultures in Huaraz
Discover the ancient wonders of Waullac and Puka Ventana in Huaraz. Step back in time with Emily and David as they explore Peruvian history.
Whispers of the Past
Today was all about diving deep into the ancient history that surrounds Huaraz. It's incredible to think that long before the Incas, civilizations like the Huari and Recuay thrived here, leaving behind remnants of their lives and beliefs. David and I set out to explore two such sites, eager to connect with the echoes of the past.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Calima - Restaurant & Café. I opted for the Lomo Saltado, savoring the blend of Peruvian and Asian flavors, while David enjoyed the Ossobuco. Fueled and ready, we headed towards our first destination: Waullac.
Experience the archaeological marvels of Waullac in Huaraz, Peru, where history and stunning landscapes intertwine.
Waullac is an archaeological complex dating back to pre-Inca times, around 600 AD. It's linked to the Recuay culture and belongs to the Wari period. As we approached the site, the landscape opened up to reveal stone structures that seemed to rise organically from the earth. These structures, we learned, were once used for funerary purposes.
Walking among the stones, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence. It's fascinating to imagine the ceremonies and rituals that once took place here, the people who honored their dead in this very spot. The structures themselves are simple yet elegant, with elevated compartments and small niches that hint at a sophisticated understanding of architecture and design. David, ever the curious one, was busy snapping photos and reading aloud from our guidebook, sharing historical tidbits about the Huari culture and their influence on the region.
Waullac is composed of 10 structures oriented from south to north. The structures are made of carved stone with elevated cavities similar to small niches. It gives the impression that they were chullpas or adaptations made by the Wari during their settlement in the Recuay territory. It is believed that Waullac was created for funerary purposes.
The site is located just 2 km from the city of Independencia, in the Antaoco neighborhood. The archaeological complex is located on the left bank of the Paria River, at an altitude of 3,126 meters above sea level.
To walk in nature is to witness a thousand miracles. - Mary DavisAfter spending a couple of hours at Waullac, soaking in the history and the views, we drove towards Puka Ventana. The name translates to Red Window in Quechua, and as we got closer, it was easy to see why. The landscape transformed into a canvas of vibrant red earth, sculpted by centuries of wind and rain.
Explore Puka Ventana, a vibrant playground in Huaraz, perfect for families and tourists seeking outdoor fun amidst the stunning Andes mountains.
Puka Ventana is a canyon that offers exceptional views of the Huandoy and Huascaran Peaks. The hike is relatively easy, perfect for acclimatizing to the altitude. As we walked, we passed small Andean Adobe mud houses and a small forest.
The trail to Puka Ventana wound its way through this surreal landscape, offering panoramic views of the Cordillera Blanca. The red earth contrasted sharply with the snow-capped peaks in the distance, creating a scene that felt both otherworldly and deeply grounding. We took our time, breathing in the crisp mountain air and marveling at the sheer beauty of the natural world. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to experience the raw, untamed beauty of our planet.
While Puka Ventana is close to Huaraz, it is advised to travel in groups of two or more, as the route is not heavily traveled. It is also advised not to bring valuables.
By late afternoon, our stomachs were rumbling, so we headed to Manka Fusión Artesanal for lunch. The restaurant offers a fusion of traditional Peruvian and Italian cuisine. David and I shared a pizza and some causa, a layered potato dish, both of which were delicious. It was the perfect way to refuel after a day of exploring.

As evening approached, we decided to check out Lliclla Rooftop Bar. This bar is known for its rock music and impressive views. Sipping on Pisco Sours while enjoying the music and the company was the perfect way to unwind.

Before heading back to Hotel La Joya, we had dinner at La Casita del Mago. This restaurant is known for its romantic atmosphere and Spanish music. The owner is a Spanish singer. David and I enjoyed a quiet dinner, reminiscing about the day's adventures. We talked about the ancient civilizations we had learned about, the stunning landscapes we had witnessed, and the delicious food we had eaten. It was a day filled with wonder and discovery, a day that reminded us of the importance of connecting with the past and appreciating the present.

Tomorrow, we're planning to summit the Cordillera Blanca and visit Mirador Huallcor. I'm a little nervous about the altitude, but also incredibly excited for the challenge. Wish us luck!
It’s moments like these, surrounded by such immense history and natural beauty, that make me so grateful for the opportunity to explore and share these experiences with all of you. Until tomorrow, safe travels and keep exploring!
