Discover the tranquility of Yamanaka Onsen, the beauty of Utatsu Park, and the artistry of gold leaf in Kanazawa.
Reflections on Nature and Art
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the soothing embrace of nature with the glittering allure of artistry. Kanazawa continues to surprise and delight me with its diverse offerings. From tranquil onsen to dazzling gold leaf, it's a place where tradition and tranquility intertwine.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Fuwari. It’s amazing how a simple meal can set the tone for the day, and the cozy atmosphere of Fuwari certainly did the trick. Maximilian and I enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast, fueling up for our adventures ahead. I savored every bite, knowing that today would be filled with exploration and discovery.

Our first destination was Yamanaka Onsen, a charming hot spring village nestled in the mountains. The train ride there was scenic, offering glimpses of the Japanese countryside. As we arrived, the air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of cedar and fresh water. Yamanaka Onsen is renowned for its therapeutic waters and picturesque setting. The village itself exudes a sense of timelessness, with traditional ryokans and quaint shops lining the streets. We strolled through the village, admiring the architecture and soaking in the tranquil atmosphere.

The true essence of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing the culture and finding moments of peace amidst the journey.
We decided to visit Kiku no Yu, a public bathhouse in the center of town. The experience was invigorating. Immersing myself in the warm, mineral-rich waters, I felt my muscles relax and my mind quiet. It was a perfect way to unwind and connect with the local culture. I couldn’t help but think of the haiku poet Basho, who once praised Yamanaka Onsen as one of the best in Japan. I understand why he felt so inspired here. The serenity is palpable.
After our onsen experience, we explored the Kakusenkei Gorge, a stunning natural wonder just a short walk from the village center. The gorge is lined with lush greenery and crisscrossed by unique bridges, including the Ayatori Bridge, which resembles a cat's cradle. We walked along the forest trail, taking in the breathtaking views and the soothing sound of the river below. It was a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Next on our itinerary was Mount Utatsu, offering panoramic views of Kanazawa. We drove from Yamanaka Onsen back to Kanazawa and found our way to the base of the mountain. The hike to the summit was invigorating, with well-maintained trails winding through the forest. As we ascended, we were rewarded with glimpses of the city below, framed by verdant trees and clear blue skies.

Reaching the summit, we were greeted by a breathtaking vista. Kanazawa stretched out before us, a tapestry of traditional buildings and modern structures, all set against the backdrop of the Sea of Japan. Maximilian and I spent some time simply taking in the view, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such beauty. I took several photos, trying to capture the essence of the moment, but no image could truly do it justice. I made a mental note to bring a better camera next time. Perhaps Maximilian will indulge me and buy me a new lens.
Our descent from Mount Utatsu led us to Utatsuyama Park Hanashoubuen, a beautiful iris garden nestled on the mountainside. Although the iris season is just beginning, there were already hints of the vibrant colors to come. I could imagine how stunning the garden would be in full bloom, with its thousands of irises and hydrangeas creating a sea of purple, blue, and white. We strolled through the garden, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the delicate beauty of the flowers.

Before dinner, we stopped by Kinpakuya Sakuda Head Shop & Workshop. I’ve always been fascinated by the art of gold leaf, and Kanazawa is renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship. The shop was a treasure trove of glittering creations, from elegant home goods to intricate works of art. We watched artisans at work, carefully applying delicate sheets of gold leaf to various objects. The precision and skill involved were truly impressive. I purchased a small gold leaf dish as a memento of our visit, a reminder of the beauty and artistry we had encountered in Kanazawa.

For dinner, we chose Akadama Honten, a Kanazawa Oden restaurant. The restaurant has been serving Kaga oden since 1927. The oden was flavorful and comforting, a perfect way to end our day of exploration. Maximilian and I savored each bite, reflecting on the experiences we had shared. It was a day of contrasts, blending the tranquility of nature with the glittering allure of artistry, and I felt grateful for every moment.

As I sit here writing this, I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. Our itinerary includes a visit to Ishiura Shrine, followed by a Kanazawa tour and a walk through the Kahoku-mon Gate. And perhaps, if we have time, we’ll stop by JIGGER BAR St.Louis for a nightcap. Until then, goodnight from Kanazawa.
I realize I forgot my power adapter and portable charger! It is quite annoying, but I must remember to buy them for the next journey.
