Whispers of History and Modern Delights

Today was a day of gentle exploration and delightful discoveries in Kanazawa. Maximilian and I set out with no grand plans, just a desire to soak in the atmosphere and uncover some of the city's hidden gems. We found ourselves wandering through serene shrines, marveling at reconstructed gates, and indulging in the local culinary scene. It's days like these, where you allow yourself to be led by curiosity, that often leave the most lasting impressions.

Our day began with a visit to the Ishiura Shrine, a place I had only vaguely noted in my guidebook. Tucked away next to Kenrokuen Garden, it’s easy to miss, but I’m so glad we didn’t. The shrine exudes a sense of tranquility, a peaceful oasis amidst the bustling city. As we approached, the gentle rustling of leaves from the surrounding trees created a soothing melody. The air was filled with the subtle fragrance of incense, adding to the mystical ambiance. According to local lore, the Ishiura Shrine is believed to be about 1500 years old. Originally a local shrine for seven villages in the Ishiura district, it was moved to its current location in 1880. The shrine is also known as a place for those seeking their soulmates, and I couldn't help but smile, thinking of Maximilian by my side. It felt like a blessing to start our day in such a harmonious place. I learned that the shrine is known for its cute mascots, especially a little white dog, which has become its symbol. I picked up a small charm with a polka-dot pattern, which apparently means all is well – a lovely sentiment to carry with me.

Leaving the shrine, we decided to simply wander, letting the city guide us. Before this trip, I made sure to brush up on my Japanese, a skill I hadn't used much since my university days. It’s been incredibly rewarding to be able to read signs and have small conversations with locals. Maximilian, on the other hand, is relying on my translations and a lot of pointing, which he does with surprising enthusiasm. I remember when we first moved to Bonn, I was just as reliant on him for navigating the German language and culture. Now, it’s fun to switch roles and share my knowledge with him.
Our aimless wandering led us to Kanazawa Tours. I had read about them online, and while we hadn't booked anything in advance, we decided to inquire about any available options. We learned that Kanazawa Tours offers a variety of experiences, from culinary explorations to historical deep dives. While a guided tour wasn't on the cards for today, we gathered some great tips from the staff, including recommendations for local sweets and hidden gems in the Higashi Chaya district. It’s always wonderful to connect with knowledgeable locals who are passionate about their city. I made a mental note to consider booking a tour for a future visit, perhaps focusing on the culinary delights of Kanazawa.

As lunchtime approached, our stomachs began to rumble, reminding us that it was time to seek out a good meal. But before that, we made our way to Kahoku-mon Gate. The gate is one of the three major gates of Kanazawa Castle, along with the Ishikawa-mon and Hashizume-mon gates. The original Kahoku-mon Gate was destroyed in 1883 and was not rebuilt until 2007, using solid beech according to traditional architectural methods, and completed in 2010. The decorative rivets behind the door resemble Western patterns if looking from a distance. The Kahoku-mon Gate, which is the front face of the San-no Maru, is located on the top of Kahoku-zaka Hill past the front castle gate. It was quite impressive to see how it was reconstructed after so long. It served as the main gate of Kanazawa Castle for practical purposes until it was demolished around 1880. After an interval of 130 years, the Kahoku-mon Gate returned to life. Based on available drawings, old photographs and documents, as well as findings from archaeological research, the restoration work respected the historical facts and used time-honored Japanese construction methods.

The best journeys are those that lead you to unexpected discoveries, both within yourself and in the world around you.

For breakfast, we visited Installation Table ENSO L'asymetrie du calme, which translates to Asymmetry of Calm. The restaurant's long name reflects the passion of owner-chef Makoto Doi. The restaurant is in Ikeda-cho, close to downtown Katamachi. I chose Kanazawa because of the pleasant environment and abundance of local ingredients. The ingredients used in cooking are first introduced as illustrations to the guests. The restaurant was originally a dressmaking school built in the Meiji period. With only Omakase courses for lunch and dinner, we had a wonderful experience. Experience exquisite French cuisine in the serene ambiance of Kanazawa's Installation Table ENSO L'asymetrie du calme.

For lunch, we headed to Nyumba. This dining bar was a delightful surprise, a cozy spot with a relaxed atmosphere. We enjoyed a selection of small plates, each bursting with flavor. The menu was a mix of Japanese and international influences, reflecting Kanazawa’s open-minded culinary scene. Maximilian, ever the adventurous eater, tried a local craft beer, while I opted for a refreshing glass of green tea. It was the perfect place to recharge before continuing our explorations. As evening approached, we decided to indulge in a traditional Kaiseki dinner at Sekitei Kaiseki restaurant. The restaurant's interior reflects the elegance and simplicity of traditional Japanese design, with tatami mat flooring, sliding doors, and beautiful artwork adorning the walls. Known for its shabu-shabu, we enjoyed a quiet, private meal as our server cooked our meal for us. The serene atmosphere provided the perfect backdrop for a memorable dining experience. To end our day, we went to JIGGER BAR St.Louis for a nightcap. The bar had a welcoming atmosphere, and the bartender was skilled in the art of cocktail making. Maximilian ordered an Old Fashioned, while I chose a classic Martini. Sipping our drinks, we chatted about our favorite moments of the day, the quiet beauty of Ishiura Shrine, the imposing presence of Kahoku-mon Gate, and the delicious flavors of our meals. It was the perfect way to cap off a day of exploration and discovery. It's a popular spot, and I can see why. The staff was friendly, and the drinks were well-made. It was a great way to relax and reflect on the day. Experience the vibrant nightlife of Kanazawa at Jigger Bar, where expertly crafted cocktails and a lively atmosphere await.

As I sit here in our hotel room at the Tmark City Hotel Kanazawa, writing about our adventures, I feel a deep sense of contentment.
