Exploring the Enchanting Bungle Bungle Range
Day 15: Chasing Shadows and Ancient Echoes: A Day Among Giants
Erzsébet explores the Bungle Bungle Range, discovering the Window's breathtaking views and Mirima's ancient rock formations with Maximilian.
Whispers of the Kimberley
The Kimberley region has a way of seeping into your soul, doesn't it? It's not just the landscape, though the Bungle Bungle Range is certainly a sight to behold, a geological symphony played out in orange and black. It's the feeling of ancient history, the whispers of the Aboriginal people who have walked this land for millennia, and the sheer remoteness that makes you feel like you're truly on the edge of the world. Today, Maximilian and I set out to explore more of this magnificent area, eager to uncover its hidden gems.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge | Eco Accommodation in Purnululu National Park. The Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge is known for its comfortable accommodations and exceptional facilities. Fuelled up with a delicious meal, we were ready to embrace whatever adventures the day held. I made sure to take a mental note to try and recreate the Barramundi dish I had, back home in Bonn. It was exquisite!
Our first stop was 'The Window', a natural rock formation offering breathtaking views of the Bungle Bungle Range. The trail to The Window, a 5km hike, took us along Piccaninny Creek. The Window frames some beautiful views of the Bungle Bungle Range. As we hiked, the landscape unfolded before us, revealing the unique beehive-like structures that make this area so famous. The sun was high, casting long shadows that danced across the domes, accentuating their curves and crevices. It was a photographer's dream, and I couldn't resist snapping away, trying to capture the essence of this surreal place.
Reaching The Window itself was like stepping into another world. The natural opening in the rock framed a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, a vista of rugged beauty that stretched as far as the eye could see. Maximilian and I stood there in awe, the silence broken only by the gentle breeze and the distant chirping of birds. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reminder of the power and majesty of nature. I could have stayed there for hours, lost in contemplation, but the day was still young, and there was more to explore.

The Kimberley is a place where the earth speaks volumes, telling tales of time, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the land.
After soaking in the views from The Window, we made our way to the Mirima Rock Formations, also known as Hidden Valley or the 'mini-Bungle Bungles'. Located near Kununurra, these ancient sandstone formations offered a different perspective on the region's geological wonders. As we approached, I was struck by the vibrant colours of the rocks, hues of red, orange, and purple that seemed to shift with the changing light.
The Mirima Rock Formations are ancient, dating back 300 million years. Walking through the formations felt like stepping back in time, wandering through an outdoor museum of natural history. The sandstone has been shaped by erosion, uplift, and the elements. We followed one of the walking trails, winding our way through narrow passages and over rocky outcrops. The silence was broken only by the rustling of leaves and the occasional call of a bird. I was mesmerized by the intricate patterns etched into the rocks, the layers of sediment that told the story of millions of years of geological activity.
Mirima is the name given to the area by the local Miriuwung people. The area retains many sites of significance. I tried to imagine what it must have been like to live here thousands of years ago, relying on the land for sustenance and shelter. The Aboriginal people sought shelter from the sun and the wet season rains. Caves located in the park served as ideal places for overnight stays and made Mirima a significant camping area for seasonal movements. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the deep connection between humans and the natural world. The sandstone rocks are protected by a thin layer of black-green algae and lichens.

Lunch was a simple affair at the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge. The lodge offers a genuine escape. We enjoyed sandwiches and fresh fruit amidst the serene surroundings. It was a welcome break, a chance to recharge our batteries before continuing our exploration. The Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge is known for its peaceful setting.
In the late afternoon, we decided to do a little shopping at the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company. I was hoping to find a travel guidebook for local flora and fauna, since I had forgotten to pack one. I didn't find exactly what I was looking for, but I did pick up a beautiful hand-painted postcard of the Bungle Bungle Range, a memento of our time here. The Bungle Bungle Caravan Park offers a range of accommodations including comfortably appointed air-conditioned cabins.
As the sun began to set, we made our way back to our campsite, the sky ablaze with colour. The air was cool and crisp, carrying the scent of eucalyptus and the distant sound of dingoes howling in the distance. We enjoyed a hearty dinner at the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company, sharing stories with fellow travellers around a crackling campfire. The licensed restaurant offers communal dining. It was the perfect end to a perfect day, a reminder of the simple pleasures in life: good food, good company, and the beauty of the natural world.
Tomorrow, we plan to venture further afield, exploring King George Falls and Danggu Gorge National Park. I'm excited to see what other wonders await us in this extraordinary corner of the world. I am a little concerned about the logistics of getting to King George Falls, as it seems quite remote, but I am sure Maximilian will figure it out!
As I sit here now, writing in my journal under the light of a flickering lantern, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. The Bungle Bungle Range has exceeded all my expectations, a place of unparalleled beauty and ancient history that has touched my heart in ways I never imagined. I know that I will carry these memories with me long after I leave, a reminder of the power and resilience of the natural world, and the importance of cherishing every moment we have on this precious planet.
