Stepping Back in Time in Lamu

Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Lamu, a place where time seems to slow down and the Swahili culture thrives. Jan and I set out to explore some of the island's historical gems and indulge in its unique culinary scene. It was a day filled with discoveries and delightful surprises, making me feel even more connected to my Kenyan roots.

Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Coco Jambo Restaurant. The aroma of freshly brewed Kenyan coffee filled the air as we settled into a cozy corner overlooking the bustling streets. I opted for a traditional Swahili breakfast of mahamri (a type of fried dough) and mbaazi (pigeon peas in coconut sauce), while Jan, ever the adventurer, chose a seafood omelet. The flavors were incredible, a perfect blend of spices and local ingredients. It's amazing how food can instantly transport you back to childhood memories. This breakfast reminded me of my grandmother's cooking in Nyahururu, a comforting and familiar taste that I cherish.

After breakfast, we decided to explore some of Lamu's historical houses, starting with JamboHouse. Although we didn't stay there, we were fascinated by its traditional Lamu style architecture and sustainable design. We learned about its history and how it has been integrated into the local community. It's inspiring to see places that respect and preserve the island's heritage.

Next on our list was The Majlis Hotel. This stunning hotel is located on Manda Island, offering breathtaking views of Lamu Island. Originally an Italian family's home, it has transformed into a boutique resort that blends Swahili, Arab, and Indian influences. We wandered through its lush gardens, admiring the unique architecture and the serene atmosphere. The hotel's design is a marvel, with each building having its own distinct character, from cool marble structures to those resembling ancient Swahili ruins.

Our final historical stop was Forodhani House, located directly on Shela Beach. This house has a remarkable history, built on the site of an old watch-post that once controlled the ships entering Lamu Archipelago. The views from the house were simply stunning, overlooking the beach and the ocean. I could imagine the watchmen of the past, diligently guarding the coast. The house itself is a masterpiece of Swahili architecture, with intricate wooden carvings and coral stone walls. It truly felt like stepping back in time.

For lunch, we ventured to Aquarius Kitchen Lamu, formerly known as Umalila, a charming restaurant along the Corniche Path. The restaurant is known for its fresh, locally sourced ingredients and its stunning views of the Indian Ocean. We savored traditional Swahili dishes with a modern twist, enjoying the gentle sea breeze and the vibrant atmosphere. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the spices added a delightful kick.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to unwind at Hindi Inn Paradise, a local bar known for its grilled dishes and vibrant ambiance. We sipped on refreshing drinks while enjoying the stunning views of Lamu's natural beauty. The aroma of grilled meats filled the air, and the atmosphere was lively and welcoming. It was the perfect place to relax and reflect on our day of exploration.

For dinner, we chose Stop Over Restaurant, a beachfront spot with stunning sea views. The restaurant is famous for its Swahili seafood dishes, and we couldn't resist trying their seafood curry. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the island's culinary heritage. As we ate, we watched the sunset over the ocean, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was a magical moment, one that I will cherish forever.

Tonight, as I sit here writing, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences of today. Lamu has a way of captivating your heart and soul, reminding you of the beauty and simplicity of life. It's a place where the past and present intertwine, creating a unique tapestry of culture, history, and natural beauty. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Kisuke Beach, Kinoni Historical Place and Tusitiri Dhow, and I can't wait to see what adventures await us on our final day in this enchanting island. I am also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Lulu Stories before we head back to Amsterdam [Lulu Stories, Kisuke Beach, Kinoni Historical Place, Tusitiri Dhow]. I am hoping that the weather will be as great as it has been today.

I am also reminded of the importance of sunscreen and a hat, which I had forgotten to pack. The sun here is strong, and protecting your skin is essential. Luckily, Jan had some extra sunscreen, but I'll definitely need to buy a hat tomorrow before we leave. It's a small reminder that even the most seasoned travelers can forget the essentials.

Even though this trip is coming to an end, I am already looking forward to our next adventure. Perhaps we will explore more of Kenya, or maybe we will venture to a new corner of the world. Wherever we go, I know that we will continue to seek out authentic experiences and cultural immersion, just like we did today in Lamu.

Asante sana, Lamu, for a day filled with memories that will last a lifetime. I feel so blessed to be able to share this experience with Jan and with all of you. Until tomorrow!
