Cultural and Scenic Escape to Lamu with My Husband
Day 8: Cultural Immersion and Tranquil Retreats: Exploring the Heart of Lamu
Discover Lamu's cultural gems, serene wellness centers, and vibrant local life in a day filled with exploration and relaxation with my husband.
A Day of Discovery in Lamu
Today was a beautiful blend of cultural immersion and personal reflection here in Lamu. Jan and I ventured deeper into the heart of this island, seeking out both its vibrant local life and its tranquil corners. It was a day that reminded me why I love sharing my heritage with him, and how travel can be both an adventure and a homecoming.
Our day began with a taste of authentic Lamu at Mama Ntilie for breakfast. Now, Mama Ntilie isn't a fancy restaurant. It's more of a local food vendor, and it was an experience! I wanted Jan to taste the real Lamu, not just the tourist-friendly spots. We had mandazi (a type of fried bread) and chai, sitting alongside locals and soaking in the morning bustle. I remember my grandmother used to make the best mandazi back in Nyahururu. This breakfast brought back those fond memories. I could see Jan's eyes light up as he tasted the sweet, fluffy bread. It was simple, but utterly satisfying.

Next on our list was Mwambani, a geographical site known for its stunning views. Reaching there involved a scenic walk along the beach, the September sun warm on our faces. As we walked, I told Jan stories of my childhood, of growing up in Kenya and the dreams that eventually led me to Amsterdam. Mwambani offered panoramic views of the Indian Ocean, the dhows sailing smoothly across the water. It was a perfect spot for reflection and a few quiet moments together.

Lamu isn't just a place; it's an experience that intertwines history, culture, and personal connection.
Our quest for tranquility led us to Banana House and Wellness Centre. This place is an oasis of calm! Nestled in a lush garden, it felt like stepping into another world. We didn't book a stay there, as we are at Lamu Sunsail Hotel, but we were keen to experience their wellness offerings. Jan and I participated in a yoga session. The instructor was amazing, guiding us through poses that were both challenging and relaxing. I felt my muscles stretch and my mind quiet down. Jan, who usually prefers more high-energy activities, was surprised by how much he enjoyed it. After yoga, we enjoyed fresh juices made with local fruits. Banana House truly lives up to its name, promoting wellness and relaxation in every aspect.

For lunch, we decided to indulge in a meal at the Lamu Palace Hotel. The hotel itself is beautiful, reminiscent of old Swahili architecture, and the restaurant offered a wide array of dishes. I opted for a seafood curry, wanting Jan to experience the coastal flavors of Kenya. He chose a grilled fish, and we shared both dishes, savoring the spices and fresh ingredients. The Lamu Palace Hotel provided not only a delicious meal but also a glimpse into the more luxurious side of Lamu.

After lunch, we explored Subira House, a historical Arab-style building in Lamu Old Town. This Grade I listed building is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it felt like stepping back in time. The architecture was stunning, with open courtyards, beautiful gardens, and airy galleries. We wandered through the house, admiring the intricate details and imagining what life must have been like centuries ago. Subira House offered a serene escape from the bustling streets of Lamu, a place where history and tranquility intertwined.

No trip to Lamu is complete without a bit of shopping, so we headed to Kiswahili Lamu. This boutique in Shela is a treasure trove of handcrafted goods. I wanted to find a few special items to take back home, something that would remind us of our time here. I bought a colorful kikoy (a traditional woven cloth) and a few pieces of jewelry made by local artisans. Jan found a beautiful wood carving that he plans to display in his office. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and Kiswahili Lamu made it easy to find unique and meaningful souvenirs.

Dinner was at the Golden Hotel, a new hotel that offers a completely new experience. The hotel has the merit of being completely new. We enjoyed a simple meal of grilled seafood and local vegetables, reflecting on the day's adventures. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with cultural immersion and tranquil retreats.

As I sit here, writing this blog post, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for this trip. Sharing my heritage with Jan has been an incredible experience, and Lamu has welcomed us with open arms. Tomorrow, we plan to visit JamboHouse, The Majlis Hotel Lamu, and Forodhani House, continuing our exploration of this enchanting island. And perhaps a drink at Hindi Inn Paradise in the evening. I'm excited to see what new adventures await us.
Lamu is more than just a destination; it's a place where you can connect with history, culture, and yourself. It's a reminder of the beauty of simplicity and the importance of preserving our heritage. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel grateful for this journey, both as a traveler and as a daughter of Kenya.
I'm also glad I only forgot a hat instead of insect repellent, especially with the sun beating down on us during our walk. I'll need to remember to buy one tomorrow. Good thing Kiswahili Lamu is open until 6:45 PM!
And I'm happy Jan is enjoying the trip as much as I am. It's always special to share my heritage with him, and to see him embrace the culture and traditions of my homeland. It makes me feel closer to him, and to my roots.
